It was so much better. No receivers whining about pass interference, No first down celebrations, No QB’s looking for flags if they get touched the wrong way. Opposing players helping each other up off the ground. I could go on and on.
The Bears O-Line really controlled the line against good defenses.Everyone on that line was solid.Mark Bortz was my favorite.Rarely saw him lose a battle.I remember an article about McMahon taking the line out for dinners alot.
Football has really changed offensively compared to current day. McMahon had 1989 yards passing, going into the 15th game, and they were the eventual Super Bowl champions.
He missed three and a half games - Detroit, Dallas and Atlanta full games and only played in the 4th qtr of the Miami game. They also led the league in rushing so they were not a pass-first team. That said, this is the year that really caused offenses to change how the game was played. The Bears' 46 defense made offenses get rid of the ball quicker. Shorter passes instead of rushing attempts have become the norm. And the rules have changed dramatically in favor of the offense.
God ,I miss these years in football.
