  • I do like Outward as a game, but it's so absolutely unforgiving and often, extremely harsh. I'm no expert at this game (I've played around 30 hours of it) and this is my first character that I've played through, so I don't have the best idea of what to do, or the best equipment, build or skills, but even so, it's a really harsh game. It's borderline frustrating to play, especially when you serial die over and over. Progression is really hard to do if you continually die. I don't know. Will keep trying, but it's not easy.

This game is not just about equip and skill, there are buffs too and food. Thats the beaty of a game. You have to eat proper, know what the buffs are about, rest your stamina to full, know the loot, how to cook stuff.

I came from the souls games into outward when it released and I got the same feeling I had when I first played dark souls. I'll drop some tips.
The game is harsh by design and you have to approach things unlike any other game. You are not a hero of legend or a powerful warrior you are just "Jim the lighthouse tender" a completely average person in a dangerous world.
    Combat:
    1. Combat is more about dealing stance damage (The white bar) than health damage. When the stance bar is below half your hits will stagger the enemy, when it drops to zero they will fall to the ground
    2. Drop your backpack before you fight, with few exceptions your backpack is too cumbersome to fight in and will make it harder for you to dodge while also slowing your stamina recovery
    3. You are going to be hit, at some point you will have to commit to attacks that will cause you to trade hits with an enemy, this is usually worth doing if you have the HP and the next hit will drop the white bar to half, also have potions ready
    Inventory:
    1. You should never have more than 2 weapons in your inventory unless you are taking them to sell, inventory space is tight. Figure out what fighting style you want to use and sell/discard all other weapons with the exception of a single ranged weapon if you want to fight at range. (mining and fishing equipment are not weapons)
    2. The only thing in your pockets should be, Potions, Bandages, Ammo, and Rags/Varnishes, everything else goes into your backpack
    3. You should have a health potion on your hotbar, knocking down an enemy and chugging a potion will help you win otherwise impossible fights.
    Exploration:
    1. Don't Rush to joining a faction, most timers do not start until you join a faction so take your time to explore
    2. Dont forget to repair your equipment (and stand guard) while you are resting outdoors, you can usually upkeep your equipment for free and never have to pay a blacksmith if you spend a few hours doing it every rest
    3. Invest in a good tent, better tents will give you extra bonuses for resting.
Equipment: (this is more about early equipment that you can get relatively easily)
    1. Writ of Tribal Favor (this can be used to keep your lighthouse for free) when you are ready to leave Cierzo, dont take the gate instead head through the Storage and through the caves to the beach south of Cierzo where Michel Aberdeen is found, wounded from the shipwreck. Give him some bandages or a health potion and he gives you the tribal favor
    2. Blue Sand Set, This is one better sets of armor in the base game it will cost you 10 blue sand, 850 silver, and 3 days. The blacksmith in Cierzo will make this for you, it takes 1 day per piece. You can gather the blue sand by fishing in Chersonese or by going to the gathering points at night. each gathering point will give you either 1 or 2 blue sand. There are 3 gathering points on the beach to the south of Cierzo, 3 in the Starfish cave (entrance located on the same beach) and 2 more located on the beach by vendaval fortress.
    3. Strange Rusted Sword, 1 handed sword, inflicts a status called "Elemental Vulnerablility" which lowers all elemental defenses by 25% pair with elemental rags or varnishes and you can get alot of damage out of it. You can find this on top of Conflux Mountain (the giant purple mountain where you get the ability to use mana)
    4. Dreamer Halberd, this is one of the stronger weapons in the game (also my favorite weapon) but it takes a lot of walking and I think joining the holy mission blocks you from getting it. You have to find an NPC called "Friendly Immaculate" in a unmarked cave called "Immaculate's Camp" in all 4 base game regions. Ask him for help and only take help twice (I'd suggest I need power the other options are not that great)
    5. Mefino's trade backpack. This is the largest capacity backpack in the game (doesn't mean its the best) it only cost you 2 power coils (these can be found in the supply cache's around Chersonese) once you have your two power coils head to Montcalm clan fort (its the bandit camp on the north end of the chersonese map) you will find the building with a door requiring 2 power coils on the western end of the camp usually guarded by one bandit.

@HadesCowboy Great tips! Though I'm super wary about dropping backpack before a fight? If you lose, will you loose all your stuff, or does the back stay where you die? If it does that, when you respawn, you could be literally miles away from it leaving you with little or no option to get back to it...?

These tips might also be helpful to a new player. I've already done most of the early starter stuff, as you can see in recent videos I've uploaded yesterday. I've also forgotten a lot of this game as it was years since I played it last, and I've only recently started to play it again.

@@hazenkorakagaming the backpack goes with you everywhere, even not equip. when you die the backpack is still within the your vicinity

Oh, well, that's okay then. I was petrified of losing it when I die that I never dropped it. Makes sense to drop it during a fight for more evasion. Especially as I favour the Nomad one (at the moment) which decreases your dodge. Thanks.

@@hazenkorakagaming If you can get your hands on 3 scaled leather you can combine them with the primitive satchel that you start with to make a 60 carry weight bag that doesnt decrease your dodge, there is a second upgrade with the DLC that makes it into one of the best bags in the game.
