I find the stereotype that INFPs are these cuddly adorable bunnies who experience no hate or negative emotions so funny cause if someone could take a look into my thoughts, depending on the circumstances there's a good chance they'd run away screaming lol

    • @Drinfp
      @Drinfp 4 роки тому +218

I do experience negative emotions a lot for some people or circumstances, but I guess in the long run we INFPs tend to choose empathy or understanding for the situation, rather than letting that feeling of negativity persist.

I kind of agree but personally i dont think that stereo type fits me as an infp that well, and its not like my deep thoughts make me emotional all the time either. Maybe im subconsciously a lot more emotional to things without realising it idk

The people who say all INFP's are these soft teddy bears just don't understand our inner workings. Every INFP has different values and some of those values and morals might not be what most people perceive as "good". We can be angels or demons.

The 'small talk' one is so accurate. That's probably the reason why no love interest stay long enough for me. I just don't like talking to them on a daily basis if all they could talk about is the weather and some lovey-dovey gestures and salutations. I don't like checking on someone to check if they ate or not.
I want to connect with someone on a deeper level. I want to know their wicked desires, aspirations, and beliefs. I want to talk about politics, theories, music, and weird interests. I want our conversations to be meaningful
Also, talking is just exhausting. Can't we just love each other without talking much? Lmao. I just simply want to be there for him/her-breathing and in love.

Small talk was never a thing in a romance with INFP. Out of the gate with dirty talk like “I see you have an interest in chemical bonding theories and questions that stump professors. Let’s discuss. By the way, want to collaborate on a book of poetry?” 😂

Try researching Non violent comunication :) I've been contemplating a lot about this topic lately. It's somehow fascinating how you can say something, and the other person view it totally differently, coz they observe through their own perspective, their filters. My best friend despite knowing me for more than 22 years totally can't get me. We discuss this a lot lately, how we used to argue on something, while basically agreeing with each other on the topic, but she misunderstood me ;) I have another friend whom I know not that long, and she totally gets me in a speed of light, we totally have similar wired brains ;) I don't need to explain myself (as I'm kinda used to haha), she just knows :) You really need lots of patience and just try to explain as long as it's finally understood properly. There probably be some times, when you encounter people who just wouldn't try to understand no matter how much you try to explain. There's nothing more to do in such a situation than to just accept the fact and cope with it.

Yes, it's exaclty that! Small talk is a huge bummer as an INFP, I think, because it seems to me that people doing it don't really care about what they're saying or about what they're asking. When I have to make small talk and someone asks me something, I don't even feel like answering, because I know they don"t care, and it will be a hassle to answer it - if I give a complex answer I will feel like an idiot blabbering to a wall, and if I give a simplified answer I will feel shitty because I'm sort of "lying" or "dishonoring" the thing I'm talking about. I've actually had a person once tell me, in the middle of me answering a question they made, "you know I don't really care, right? I'm just making conversation." About small talk. We sometimes like it and sometimes don’t. Say we are not in the mood to talk, or get energy from this person that they are not that interesting, we only hope if such people approach us, they will speak for a minute and go. If someone wants to talk deeply with us, usually deep convos are our thing, but their version of a deep convo doesn’t match ours, we won’t be interested. I like talking about spirituality, how to grow and question norms, how to break from conditioned ways. But let’s say someone has a deep conversation about politics to me; i won’t be interested. Unless you tell me how politicians should change and reveal what goes on behind closed doors, i won’t be interested in which party stands for what or whose running the election. So we like small talk with people we find boring, because they will walk away sooner. We like deep talk with someone who brings topics unheard of, the progress community, and let’s face it, we hardly get those out of box thinkers on a daily basis.
Side note: i actually love when a plant grows through a cracked rock. Absolutely fascinating.

for me, I'm really interested in deep and random conversations about literally everything: astrology in which i absolutely relate a lot and im obsessed about, religion, history, books, philosophy, etc. i also love to talk about science, timelines, temporal paradoxes, multiverse, alternative realities, time travel, even if i don't have so much intellectual property in that. i love talking about writing and my ideas for stories and it's so hard to find someone who's actually interested in listening to me. im quite perfectionist and overly critical of myself, so i like to create characters, their stories and profiles, i can get through hours exploring Google Earth just to find the locations in which i want this idea to be placed on, but sometimes i end up being way too indecisive about my ideas so i usually tear them apart and start from the zero again. by that, you probably already know I'm an infp.

The small talk thing is interesting. When I hear "shallow" vs "deep" I'm not sure I'm thinking of the same thing as everyone else.
Sure, I like to have conversations of "substance" (especially with people I actually enjoy) but if things are too "deep" that is uncomfortable. I don't want to talk about the weather cause that is uninteresting and impersonal. But I'd still rather talk about "things" than "feelings". I can talk to friends and family about zombie apocalypse plans for a while but I don't want to talk about my deepest regrets or awkward touchy-feely stuff or death of a loved one. I prefer emotions with real people to be at a comfortable surface level. I rather awkward things be reserved to my fictional characters and situations that don't involve me. My friends and I have trust and are able to confide in each other if need be, but usually we just have dumb fun. It's better to be entertained and not bogged down. Let's play video games and talk humorously about stupid theoretical nonsense. "Deep" doesn't seem like the right word for that.

@@ivanab6858 I'm pretty sure a lot of people struggle with this. But I'm not saying your statement is wrong either (I don't know a lot of INFPs so). I have personally undervalued myself quite a lot (and sometimes still do), but it's both a product of my own self-esteem and the environment I grew up in. Being an introvert surrounded by heated and loud extroverts didn't really help. :|
I can't speak for every INFP out there, but I think being truthful to your individuality makes for a more honest and open person, but also makes one stand out and receive more backlash for being "abnormal". That's what I imagine at least.

There are two things that I can say that I hate
    1. To be called heartless or insensitive: If something that makes me not angry, FURIOUS, is that they tell me that. I hate it with all my being, for the simple fact that it is the opposite, I worry a lot about other people to the point of putting others in front of me. The thing is how people tend to ignore our way of being and when we attract attention to ourselves they misunderstand us or do not listen to us confusing things and end up hurting us and it does not help that we do not like to show our feelings for this very thing. Another factor is that we are very imaginative and we end up creating high expectations of various scenarios and when they end up happening in the end we do not react as we thought because of this. Giving an example years ago happened the case that a classmate died and when they gave us the news I was disappointed in a way, don't get me wrong I was sad but I expected a stronger reaction like that of my classmates who started crying and it became chaos. The question is that my best friend (I think it's infp I'm not sure) was the same as me but another friend was crying and I couldn't bear to see him like that so I went with him to try to cheer him up and I told him something personal and other thing and that makes us laugh and end him cheering. What happened is that a classmate saw me laughing with my friend and then in front of the whole class he scold me and said "heartless bastard". It hurt a lot and I even ended up accepting his words as true (at that time I started to have random periods of apathy and that made me lose my understanding of my emotions at that time so I thought I was being apathetic) I would leave it here but I will finish the story if you are interested if you do not go to point 2.
Then the parents invited us to the funeral and it was super uncomfortable really uncomfortable, and a classmate did not help at all (this classmate is an idiot that the whole class disliked even me on certain occasions but it does but I had more respect for him than most of my classmates since he was not a fake ass person) since he comes and stands in front of everyone and tells them crying shitty babies and that they look like girls for crying and I could not help the cringe he gave me when he said that (I have to say that although it was a stupid move, he did not do it with bad intentions, he simply wanted to encourage others but he is an idiot so he screw it up)
    2. People who don't understand what they want and don't appreciate what they have: This is going to be like 3 in one but I'm lazy to separate them. By this I mean superficial people who dream of nonsense they do not understand. I mean they come and want tragedies to happen to them because they think it will give them an exciting life as if it were a tv series. And they complain about their lives without appreciating what they have, that angers me a lot since they throw shit at what they have and then complain? That is being ungrateful and these are the same people who come and say stupid things like they have depression. No friend is not depression to be lazy and to be sad is not the same as depression. That idea that some have that depression is sadness and melancholy is bad in shape (It is true that one can express it that way but it is more a poetic way of expressing it) personally it would be better to express it like a tired, apathetic, desperate person and with a strong hate. But I didn't hate those people until I started to see how superficial people react to this.
And what reaction are you talking about?
Well, they come and put messages saying "NOOO DON'T BE LIKE THAT, BE STRONG, ETC". It angers me since they are the same people who complain that someone is dramatic to put it in a way. The solution to help that person? Pray for their dreams to come true and watch them turn into nightmares. I HATE that society repudiates the negative, friends please in life you need to have good and bad experiences to improve as a person and each person is different and that makes their level of The experience different.
As an infp you can tell me crybaby or dramatic and it's true. We are people who feel things in a deep way and that makes us hurt in a simple way and we get scars for small things sometimes and I hate this but at the same time I love it because by small acts I learn great things; A helping hand in a moment of sadness taught me what a true friendship is, the death of a pet taught me what it is a healthy loyalty, how being a good person regardless of the circumstances can change someone in a healthy way or make it worse, Each injury and fall makes you the person you are now. And I can't help but get angry since they want to deny that to a person? Remember that it is the darkness of the night that makes the moon and stars shine and look beautiful.
By the way, sorry for the big comment and the grammatical mistakes that are in it, English is not my first language and normally I would edit it more but if I do it i would publish it until tomorrow ('^ _ ^)

I don't get the two people talking about depression in this comment.
I have a friend that's clinically diagnosed and taking medication. As for myself, my enviroment is not the best and thanks to thigs she has explained to me, I'm starting to think I may not be just overreacting to everything, and I may need to talk with someone about it.
We both have wanted to die. I don't even know how I feel sometimes. She has it much worse than I do, and I understand her, but I have been able to get by dettaching from reality as much as I can.
Yes, I know I have a perfectly ok life. Not lacking anything. Not needing anything. I have a computer for f* sake. I don't even want anything for chrismas this year because I don't need anything.
That just makes me feel worse.
Like I don't even matter. Like how I feel doesn't even matter. Like I should just ignore everything and take my place as a middle class pretty girl with a complete family and an ok future. There ARE people who would want my life. I should be happy, worrying about something stupid like selfie filters.
But I can't and I'm so angry at myself for being so affected by things that have happened.

The way you described your daughter, she might be an INFP-A, because, I recently found out that my mom's personality type is INFP-A, and she gets upset over everything too, in fact this morning she got mad and started screaming like a kid because, she didn't no where her keys were, an I had to help calm her down, like I normally do everyday, an I talk to her and told her that she needs focus on what she was doing when she lost the keys, and then retrace her steps and she will find them, and she always does find them, but, then point I'm trying to make, is that INFP type never grows out of their moodiness, all you can do is just sit down with them and talk them down from their anger by being calm and respectful about the way they feel about something and that should be enough to help them, also, try to get her to write down how she feels about stuff and maybe that would help, because, I don't know if that works for INFP personality type, since I'm an INFJ personality type, but, when I get upset, I write down my feelings, an it makes me feel better, so, maybe that could work for INFP too.

Interesting discussion 😌👍 I find the biggest struggle with face-to-face conversation to be having to blurt out sentences on the spot which afterwards I regret - sometimes for years, yikes - because they don't fully capture my feelings on that subject. Either they're too reductionist or didn't have the tone I'd have preferred to really convey my thoughts, sometimes just seeming too shallow. That's why I prefer writing where I can revise my thoughts until I feel they best reflect my real opinions (which may only have gained clarity as I edited them...!) It's that paradox of being a walking pile of emotions and yet not always understanding my own feelings. Finding the right words helps, however long it takes!

Same here, it's a big regret. It was like "Why should I have said that?". I don't know but sometimes, the Te of us react to a conversation and it made the chaos of our sentences by all of a sudden. And yes, I prefer writing more as you can undo or even delete your sentences with no harm (Well, I don't care with the yell of people who are online lol). In real life, once you send it, it's perceived by people and you can't take it back, oof.

As an INFP I actually really care about things making sense, but less in a practical way. I care more about truth as a whole, no matter how abstract that may sometimes be. I understand that practicality is important and I do value it, but sometimes it just seems lifeless and cold, with no regard for actually enjoying the one life we're given. I can't relate to high Te users because I use Te as a tool for my other functions, not the other way around.
Edit: On small talk. Other people tend to see me as wise, and I appreciate that. But, most people's ideas of a "deep" conversation are really just me repeating what I've already solidified as my beliefs. What I really want is for someone to challenge me and help me see the world differently. I want to be taught. And, if small talk comes from a genuine place and is interesting, and i'm in the mood to talk at all, sure. I'm happy to observe and lust for the beauty of the world. But if you're just going to spew dry facts at me that mean nothing, I'm not going to listen.

I believe there is such a thing as real or not real, but I do not believe there is such a thing as normal or abnormal...

As for your "native speaker" thing, yeah native speakers are going to look more deeply into a language than non-natives, I don't think there's anything wrong with that. We're talking about more than the dictionary here: we're talking about the deeper meaning to society.

I have an online friend who's an INTJ and altho I talk to him for hours, I feel more energised rather than drained because both of us hate small talk and we just talk about random crazy ideas or our common interests. His perspective on stuff varies from mine but that just makes it more interesting imo and it feels like its actually a memory worth treasuring.
I have a few friends with whom the only thing I do is small talk and how our day was and honestly it kinda makes it feel like a waste of energy to me. I love them a lot but when I'm talking to a friend, I'm more interested in knowing them on a deeper level (like their opinions/feelings/thoughts about stuff) rather than some superficial chit chat.

Yes! This is so very me. Every bit of it.
Also it’s super nice to know there are lots of INFP’s out there and even listening to this and part of this community. Hi!
Hey there Mr. UA-cam channel guy (so sorry, I’m horrible with names) I know you aren’t an INFP, mainly because you speak so concisely and several other reasons but thanks. Thanks for being able to put to words things about INFP’s that we have a hard time conveying ourselves. (Well at least I do. Maybe other INFP’s struggle to put their thoughts into normal makes sense people words)

The idea of us as pure angelically innocent and delicate creatures is so off base. Most days I feel like an alien observing the world with a critically objective eye, meticulously dissecting everything i see and filing it away in the name of science. Around people I care about, I feel more like a mother bear, keeping vigilant watch, showing tender care, but always aware in the back of my mind that I may need to shred someone open to defend my loved ones and wouldn't hesitate nor regret.

  • @morgrugg

Firstly, it's all true about me.
I always root for the one that has more obstacles to overcome.
I hate the word "normal". People say it all the time as if it actually meant something, and all it is is just a subjective construct in their minds.
And I hate it when people say "awkward silence". Silence is not awkward, it is nice to be silent together. It's a waste to fill this silence with some menial conversation about the weather that no-one is really interested in.
Lastly, when you spoke about subscribing, I noticed I hadn't subscribed yet 😅 it's fixed now.
Second thing, maybe it's weird, but I'd really like to see you in a movie sometime. Playing a demon with a conscience or a president of hell who just has to run everything and tries to do it in the best way possible even though all he gets are the souls of the doomed. Have you ever acted in a movie? Are you planning to?

yes!! one persons merit cannot be deemed a demerit by another! our worldview are so vastly different that picking and choosing how others should live is absolutely ridiculous! if no malicious harm is done (because sometimes, harm is unavoidable, and unless a malicious intent is involved, it can be swiftly dealt with) then we shouldnt interfere with how others live!!

The small talk part, yes! I often get yelled at by my parents that I don't call enough (insisting I call every single day, just so they know I'm okay) but...I have nothing to say! To me it's absolutely pointless to talk unless there's some actual purpose to it. We can talk when you want to talk about something meaningful or useful. Not to talk about the weather and how Aunt Cathy made strawberry jam on Friday.

Another thing we hate is routine, and too much repetition. This makes studying music difficult, even though we love music. Music is a life of repetition, practising the same things over and over. Even if you make it big, you are then performing the same pieces or songs over and over. My background is in visual arts, which is so much freer and unstructured compared to the life of a musician or music student. I'm learning piano, and just started clarinet, which is hard work, all the blowing, is exhausting, makes piano seem easy!😅 I did violin for 3 years, which I don't want to go back to. I'm proud I managed 3 years, when I started I didn't think I'd last one term! 😅

I work at a hotel and I get small talk quite often. Attempting to be normal and professional, I try to respond but it usually ends up with me saying "yeah" a bunch until I realize that I'm saying it too much and I eventually go quiet while trying desperately to think of something interesting to say while not offending them in any way whatsoever and then before I know it they're heading off to their room and I mentally smack myself for how awkward I was...

HAH! Love this. I work in retail and strive to personalize every shoe purchase someone makes. I often find myself searching for conversations that go deeper than the abysmal small talk. It's draining, because not everybody wants this. Small talk is perfectly fine with the masses, BUT IT ISN'T.

Sir, I am an INFP. I become very upset when someone criticize me regarding the decisions I made in life. Again, I am 27 and yet I haven't been in a relationship even once. Sometimes, when I think about these, I kinda become very self analytic about myself and while doing so, I focus more on my flaws rather than my positives which further upsets me more. Any suggestions?

    • @fluffykittens1387

From my INFP sister: "You need to forgive yourself for your flaws and remind yourself that, if it's truly something that harms yourself or others, then there are ways for you to change and grow. However, some flaws are not truly flaws, but merely aspects of your personality that should be considered as parts of your true beauty as a whole. Like..." She is now trying to think of simile.

      Her: Uno reverse

So my antidote to small talk is to make it not small. When the chatter is insipid, im usually compelled to dig in and talk about what might really be running through the persons head. " you dont really care if ive had the pumpin thing from starbucks bruh. Why are your ears red? Bf, yeah? Was the test positive???" Conversation either begins to mean something, or ends. Its not always a polite thing to do, but it bypasses the small talk. I say outloud as a guess what they might be feeling, and then dig into the why. I find that those who use small talk often want to discuss bigger things but dot really know how to go about it. So i just give them the space to vent. I always thought i did this because I want to understand. Now i wonder if its because i hate small talk...

Try some creative things I want to do outside of college because I hated the pressure and anxiety from school. However now i found that procrastinate far to much and have no order to competing works...thinking maybe now that I know for sure what I want I should go back to school for guidance...or try some online learning service ??? idk the drive to be unique/true with myself and not feel pressure to do so because of society is really what makes the decision so difficult.

as an INFP, I can tell you that there are A LOT of things that anger me. Maybe I just don't show it, but things bother us all the time. Also I don't mind small talk as long as I am meaningfully connecting with the person. If we are talking about how we both have to have coffee in the morning, it's like, "wow! I'm connecting with you, you are sharing something personal about yourself", but if it's for absolutely no reason like, "yeah the custodians are wanting to move to a different building, what should we watch on TV." like bruh 💀💀

All of this, ha… While I do know some INFPs who fully embrace the 'fluffy' way we sometimes come across, it irks the heck out of me, and it's an aspect I've tried very hard to suppress in the long-run (unless, OFC, it's a purposeful show that I put on when I think it'll benefit me somehow).
So true about not liking the word 'hate' as well. While I don't like using the word, a few very specific things will absolutely cause me to go (internally) feral. Yet, I'll still use a very calm, 'flowery' way of speech while ripping the person's rationale to shreds.
I'd like to also add "deliberate closed-mindedness in the face of new or contradicting information" to that list of strong dislikes.
