Angie’s skincare vids have been very very helpful indeed. Found her back in 2016. Game changer. Sparked an obsession lol! I haven’t come out of the rabbit hole yet! :)

I have been told by MUA’s and brand representatives, for a very long time, that my undertone is neutral. I have also been told by them that my depth of color is light. As a result, I have always struggled to find the right foundations and concealers, never getting a good match. In replacing my makeup (after losing it all), I mistakenly bought a foundation that I thought I’d end up giving away because it didn’t meet those criteria. It was fair and cool. It matched my skin perfectly! Those that where light and neutral didn’t at all. It was a makeup revelation for me and explained the struggles I’d experienced for decades. Once you find the right depth and undertone for your skin, it can change your makeup experience from bad to blissful.

When I go to Sephora (or other shop) to test shades, I also bring individual packets of Neutrogena makeup wipes. It works better than regular tissues to wipe off the swatches on my arm (or neck or face) and gives me clean canvas to test more. I love you did the swatches on white paper, I do the same. But I use kitchen paper towel instead. It absorbs better - dries faster. And one more thing to bring is a mirror. Not all stores have good mirrors under good light. When you test swatches on your neck or face, you want to see it under various lights.

"I don't think it's an US problem, I think it's a THEM problem." Well said! Foundation manufacturers are often downright colorblind. Not only do they get undertones wrong a lot (I have trouble finding cool-toned foundations that aren't ORANGE), they also have problems getting out enough shades (hello, lightest foundation shade that's still three shades too dark for me!)

  • @christinamoller5742

This is such a useful video. I often buy too light a shade because those dots are always much darker than the actual shade! You put it on, gasp, and pray for oxidation. And it’s so true that brands vary in shade types! What Milani calls “light” is super fair and most brands call light around your shade. I usually wind up looking for swatches and models.

Samples are fabulous! Have been trying (and failing miserably) to find a replacement for my current discontinued foundation. After reading lots of reviews I went to Sephora and got 2 samples after they shade matched me. Able to try on over my moisturizer and a couple different sunscreens and to my surprise the foundation I thought I'd end up buying isn't the one I purchased. Great service, thanks Sephora!

This video is so informative! I always find it to be extremely hard to find my perfect foundation match because I have light olive skin tone, and usually brands don't carry much olive shades and when they do it already starts on a medium skin tone, never light or pale.

Samples are also great for checking texture, coverage, glow, and fragrance.
For example, after Angie's first video, I wanted to try the Sephora Best Skin Ever. The clerk and I found a very promising shade. As usual, I got my sample. When I opened it at home, away from the sensory overload of the store, I realized it had a scent I could not deal with.
I also use a "skin double" on UA-cam. For me, it's Zabrena, though I'm not a redhead. If a color works for her, it's usually a great match for me. She has oily skin, I don't, but we both dislike dewy foundation. I might be old enough to be her mom, but I get a lot of good recommendations from her.

Unfortunately, the Best Skin Ever foundation has alcohol in it, and I have very dry and sensitive skin. So it's a hard pass for me. I can't spot the fragrance ingredient(s) in the ingredients list, but I don't doubt that they're in there - it's just one(s) that i don't recognize.
I learned the hard way to not to buy skin care or makeup products with alcohol or fragrance. I do NOT enjoy eczema breakouts on my face! I have prescription eczema medications to use when it happens, but it takes several days for them to work. So I walk around with red, itchy patches on my face!

    • @lizcademy4809
      @lizcademy4809 2 роки тому

@@20thcenturyrelic I didn't realize there was fragrance in it until I got my sample home. Then I did a deep dive into the ingredients and found a "fragrance compound" - an ingredient that can both scent the product and do other things. I don't remember the name, sorry.
Fragrance and (a little) alcohol don't bother my skin, but I don't want my skin care or makeup to compete with my perfume!

Hi Angie. I'm in the Caribbean, Trinidad 🇹🇹, it's 7:45 pm here. Monitoring hurricane 🌀 Ian at the moment, which is off the coast of Florida. Hope you're safe.
Tip for people with warm undertones: warm shades are either olive or golden. I'm a golden warm so olive tones look wrong even though it's warm. My loreal true match perfect shade is 4.5 , fresh beige. I've noticed that some warm shade names don't match the color, so that's another thing to be aware of.

Great tips! I've always been a shade matching enigma. I'm pretty fair but match to a light-medium. It's the strangest thing. I've gone in to either Sephora or Ulta multiple times for color matches and their first instinct is to go for the fair (sometimes even porcelain) shades and I try to tell them but they never believe me, lol They're always so shocked every time they have to go up another shade. It's weird but by now at the age of 50 I've learned that most light-medium neutral shades will work for me. I like the idea of taking your best shade on a piece of paper into the store.

I actually bring my “ good match” foundation to the store with me and do swatches in store. I find that makes comparing color, texture, finish, dry down, oxidation, etc, more accurate than comparing them after the “good” one has already dried or possibly worn off a little. I’ve also done the white paper swatch side by side with a skin swatch and, surprisingly, they were quite different when dry.
It’s all such an annoying process!!

I literally just went through this!! My hubby and I were in NY and forgot my concealer. While there, I wanted to try the new Hourglass foundation. I was told I would like the Haus Labs foundation better. We “swatched” both on opposite sides of my fave. I got “color matched” for the Haus. Started to use it but thought something was off. When I got back home to Houston, I went to my local store. Explained my situation and how I was second guessing myself in ALL my foundations. They used their computer to color match me for the Haus. Turns out, I got the wrong shade in NY after being “color matched”!?!? So I got color matched for my other foundations while there. Also was told that some companies are “opposite” of what it says. It’s confusing enough to find the right shade and they now throw this in!!! Thank you so much Angie for making this a bit more simple!!

I think one problem with "neutral" foundations is the idea that neutral=peachy, as in a mix between warm golden and cool pink gives you a peachy/orangey color. And sure, that's a thing, yellow+pink=peach. However, some of us neutral girls actually need a more gray undertone! Otherwise we look like oompa loompas! :D Revlon Colorstay in 150 Buff is a good example of what I think of as a true neutral, it's not peachy at all.

I'd recommend watching Taylor Wynn's foundation reviews, she was a good match for the CYO so I use her swatches and wear tests to judge shades. If it looks too golden or peachy on her, it probably won't work for me either.

I always see 'Fair' by itself.
But 'light' can be by itself, or can be 'Light-to-Medium.'
Have never seen a 'Fair-to- Medium' shade.

Angie, that Loreal Trumatch in your shade is my best, so far. I tried it after watching your demo on it. 😀
I'm 'fair' but have 'low chroma'...(i.e., light but not bright skin. - to the point that a light shade with an olive undertone looks good on me (a true light olive ) - there are only a couple brands that have 'olive' tone right (that I know of).
For some reason most brands seem to think an olive undertone just naturally means dark golden.
A true olive undertone is not golden. Believe it or not, olive toned skin is actually a cool, not warm, undertone. Most brands have it wrong.
The veins on the inside of my arm are aqua, and neutral undertones generally work pretty good for me.
My eyes are aqua also, with gold flecks, but depending on what I'm wearing they can look more green, or sometimes blue. I have weird coloring. 😕

As for men wanting to wear foundation, it is very very hard. The right shade, the facial hair that gets in the way, the makeupy look, the acne-prone skin... I just gave up ! Instead, when I want a perfect-skin illusion that would be as natural as possible, I manage to do it with powder and a spray of thermal water to blur everything and to avoid looking like I applied something creamy on my face. Because, no matter how light-weight it is, a foundation and even BB/CC creams are noticeable on men. I make my own powder based on dry pink clay, cornflour, silica micro-beads, lauroyl lysin talc and zinc oxide. Not only it is natural, it's invisible, but it also benefits the skin.
Thank you Angie for your video which is always nice to watch !

Spot on Angie with everything you said in the beginning of this video. So so true. I have been going through a phase where I just cannot find a foundation I really really like. If the formula is meh then I find a shade that looks good conversely if I find a foundation that has a great formulation for me the shades are a joke! I ask myself what I’m the world are these companies thinking!? The best thing I ever had was when a pro makeup artist would make a personal match for me mixing it up from scratch. She was my makeup artist I would go to for makeup and brows boy do I miss those days. Ty for doing such a thorough review on a very hot topic. Xx

Good evening Angie it’s a very good way to shade match
I sometimes put my foundation on paper & take it with me but a thing I had to remember is to wait until the foundation drys
Thank you for sharing see you next time 🌺🌸

I don't know if I'm the only one like this, but ever since COVID and I started working from home I don't like to wear as much make up. In fact, I usually only wear mascara, eye brow color, and lip gloss. However, I put all of my time, money, and effort into skin care. I buy almost everything Angie recommends for skin care ( I haven't bought the light thing yet). Anyway, I'd love some tips and tricks on how to look great with very minimal make up. For example, one thing I've started doing is using self tanner on my face - that way it has some color and I only have to mess with it about 1-2 times per week. I love your channel Angie, I've been watching since I was 40 (7 years).

The first time I got a really good shade match was using the Estée Lauder true match foundation coloring and photos online. I realized I was Neutral and also higher up on the chart not on the first pale shades of foundation. I don’t even bother using any other foundation. I don’t like shade matching and they don’t compare to the versatility of True Match. I mix it with a serum from the Inkey List in the summer and I’m good to go.

Keep some foundation adjusting drops on hand so you can adjust your shade anytime you need.
I just bought the new HG foundation directly from HG and picked shade 3 which is too light and can't return...However I have a Physicians Formula adjusting drops. It's a set of white and brown you can buy from their site for around $10. I can darken or lighten my foundations easily.
Nyx has some too...they even have blue so you can cool down a shade.
It's nice because our shades change throughout the seasons.

When I was younger I was diagnosed with PCOS I’m now menopausal but my neck is still darker than my face. For years I would match my face and have to cover my neck to match. When I was in my late 40s I finally figured out to match my neck instead of my face and I’m not covering my neck in foundation anymore. Just something to think about if you have my same issue.

    • @MyCleverHandle

I was a PCOS patient too for many years. Don't know what it had to do with skin tone on my neck, but when rosacea joined the party, I changed over to BareMinerals OG Original loose mineral powders for foundation. Two, or three, adjoining shades made matching my face so much easier, especially when that rosacea flares up. I still won't wear traditional liquid or cream foundations. I've been spoiled!

    • @jessicastevens5782

it's wild how different everyone is. BareMinerals powder was one of the 1st products I could pinpoint as directly causing an immediate rosacea flare for me.

    • @20thcenturyrelic
      @20thcenturyrelic 2 роки тому

@@jessicastevens5782 Speaking from about 30 years of experience, rosacea can be very tricky. The triggers are definitely individual. I have learned to avoid alcohol and fragrance in skin care and makeup, and that helps. But once in a while, even my tried and true products bother me.
My dermatologist prescribed a compounded lotion that's 15% azelaic acid, 1% metronidazole, and 1% ivermectin that's done wonders for my redness. I suspect the miracle ingredient is the azelaic acid. Since it's compounded, I spend about $300 USD a year on it, but it's worth it to me.

    • @MyCleverHandle
      @MyCleverHandle 2 роки тому

@@20thcenturyrelic Yes, I've heard from several sources that Azelaic acid is the answer for rosacea. But I have to be careful about anything compounded with it, like metronidazole (which in higher concentrations is known as Flagyl, a powerful antibiotic for gut problems) and ivermectin (which in higher concentrations is a miticide and can have detrimental effects on the immune system). I'm also on a beta blocker, an ARB, and a calcium channel blocker for blood pressure issues which contributed to a bleeding ministroke a few months back. I also just recently was weaned off an anticholinergic I took for over three years for bladder issues, which my docs strongly suspect also set me up for the stroke. So any treatment for my rosacea has to be doctor-guided and must take lower priority than other issues. But thanks for giving me more to ask about on my next dr.'s visit!

Very helpful! I feel so bad about waste too and hate going to the mall so I end up trying to make the shade work… Using your method I can easily go to a stand alone Ulta and get the right shade. Also, I too find it frustrating when even the online matches says Neutral, but in reality a cool would have been better. Thank you so much!

Good idea about using the paper. I find that my summer skin is deeper than my winter skin, even when using sunscreen. So I generally need two foundations. Using the paper method will allow me to try out new foundations on the market before my skin lightens or darkens. Thanks!

I'm here (7pm). Perfect timing for me because I was babysitting my 4 mo old granddaughter earlier. I rely on your perfect shades because they will be mine! Makes it easier for me! 👍🏻Yes, yes, great suggestion swatching on paper!! I've even taken a bottle of foundation to the store with me. Pump a drop of it on my hand and then a sample pump of what I think might match! That was before I found you 😉 Now I just pull up your channel on my phone and look for what shade is best for you! 🥰
