  • Thomas Henry Sargent (21 November 1894 -- 7 May 1963), better known by the stage name Max Miller -- the Cheeky Chappie - was a British front-cloth comedian who was top of the bill in variety in the 1930s, '40s and '50s. He made films, toured in revues and music hall, and sang and recorded songs, some of which he wrote. He was known for his flamboyant suits, his wicked charm, and his risqué jokes, which often got him into trouble with the censors.
    I knew a very nice lady called Mary Dozin about 40 years ago in Wimbledon. She often mentioned her husband Ivan and had told me he was the conductor of a theatre orchestra. Well here he is!! I would have more questions for Mary but I moved away in '76 and I see that she died in 1993 and Ivan in 1997. For a picture of Ivan - Google images - "The Last Night at the Met ." (I htought Mary called him Ivor and it sounds as if Miller does too - Ivor Dozen!)

    A true legend. He famously declared: "There will never be another when I'm gone!" He was true. 50 years after his death, no-one has come up to his standard.

      Dad saw Max as well. His Aunt Jessie, known by her stage name, Lyn Joyce, worked with Max as a soubrette. Dad's brother, Ray Alan, was on the bill with Max. Ray was a friend of Bob Monkhouse who was given a masterclass in comedy by Max. Ray was given a masterclass in comedy by Stan Laurel when he was the ventriloquist on Stan and Oliver's last tour. Lord Charles face was modelled on Stan. Harry Worth was the original ventriloquist on that tour and Stan noticed Harry's natural talent for comedy and advised him to give up ventriloquism and take up comedy instead.

      @@davidwhyberd7612 Are you aware of the word 'irony' jesse? The number of times I've repeatedly asked you over and over a simple question, and you refuse to answer it, yet you fire questions at me, I will happily answer your questions, the problem is, you don't accept my answers. The 10 commandments are not all based around moral issues, which is what we're discussing here ..moral absolutes, go read my initial comment. We can go through them one by one, which is what I did, starting with the 1st commandment, "Thou shalt have no other Gods but me" ..clearly, this has nothing to do with morality, Hindu's, Muslims, etc worship completely different Gods, yet they follow a set of moral codes just like every other civilization. Number 2 "You shall make no idols" ..again, nothing to do with moral issues, but even this commandment makes no sense, every Christian worships the image of Christ, he's on every crucifix, church, book, etc, doesn't every Christian idolize the image of Christ? I'm happy to go through all 10 commandments Jesse, but it will take me a while, and I don't want to make these comments too long, and then find the entire comment gets ghosted. So my next comment will look at commandments 3, and 4, ... and so on.
      How many times have I asked you how do you determine what is true jesse? conversations are back and forth dialogues, not 1 person firing questions at the other while refusing to answer any questions himself. People like yourself Giaus and saintpaul are perfect examples, you love to make snarky comments and ask questions without engaging in honest dialogue, Jacob to be fair tries to answer as best he can, but his sight issues muddle up his replies and its hard to fully comprehend what he's saying. Less of the snark jesse, more of the honest dialogue would be appreciated 🙂

      +Alan Bond My father saw him as well just after WW2, but by the mid-fifties television was taking over, people always said the Max never came over on TV, he didn't like being on it cos he needed to see the full audience to be able to see their faces and reactions and of course you need plenty of fresh material, it wouldn't work today as you can say anything you like, Max was cheeky but never coarse, he always left off the last words of a song or a joke so no one could be offended - sheer brilliance..

    I am a Yank just discovering this man.....hilarious...the humour transcends time and culture, and a sentimental sweet song at the end, as well, with great whistling, I may add.....a lost art.....I don't think people even realize how many singers would whistle beautifully at the middle bridge of songs..

      reminds me of one of his gags (wish I could find a recording of it to prove he said it, but I definitely heard it somewhere or other, and it couldn't have been anyone else):
      "I was on an underground train the other day, sitting next to this young lady, and as we got into a station, she began to look round and asked "Is this Cockfosters" and I said: "No lady, Miller's the name...".
      Very naughty but it would be the people laughing who were the naughty ones who'd get him into trouble, not Maxie, oh no... ;-)

    It's totally different these days, in the 30/40s Max could tour this all around the South of England, he did not like going to0 far cos he hated digs and would always catch the train home to Brighton, he could take it to over 100 theatres and use the same material and it would last a whole season he was known to be mean, he never bought a drink or gave anyone a cigarette , he gave thousands to charity but in secret, he critiqued a young Bob Monkhouse in lieu of payment and taught him how to be a stand up, a few years later Bob was a millionaire scriptwriter and he helped Max during his finale years

    • @mikewellwood1412
      @mikewellwood1412 4 роки тому

      He made a joke (at least one) about his meanness: "I was in this pub the other evening, and these Irishmen came in and asked for a whisky each, and looking at me, said "and give him one too". They kept on doing this, and at the end of the evening, I'd had seven whiskies. Can you believe it? Then one of them said: "Here, you're that Max Miller aren't you?" I said yes. He said "You''ve got a lot of properties in Brighton haven't you?" I said yes. Then he said: "Well, you ought to sell one of them and buy a drink!"....

    I know people who saw him 'live', they say he never came over as well on TV, of course in the 40's Max could travel all over the south of England with same act for 6 months of the year but on TV you needed new material all the time, stand up comedy is a totally different game these days
