CORRECTION:
I found this little morsel since making the video:
"According to engineer Mauro Forghieri, the designation "BB" did not originally mean "Berlinetta Boxer." He stated during an interview with Davide Cironi that they knew the car was not equipped with a Boxer engine. He explained the meaning of the acronym (Berlinetta Boxer) was fabricated by journalists, in reality, it means Berlinetta Bialbero (dual camshaft)" (Then there's the Bridgette Bardot Story....)

Hate to be "that guy", but the BB 512 was a 180° V12 - *NOT* a boxer, even though Ferrari called it a 'boxer' (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ferrari_Berlinetta_Boxer ). Opposing pistons shared a journal where as in a boxer (such as our 911s) have their own journals and go in and out together. The boxer is the matched pistons punching in and out in sync, i.e. 1-4, 2-5, 3-6.
Hello Joby! I love it 😻 Thank you 🙏
This is an incredible video series for the newbie on engine rebuilds. As a 996 owner, I am so pleased with the content and humor along the way. Don’t change a thing!
I really appreciate you taking the time to tell me that! Thank you for watching 🤘😎
"greetings fellow earthlings and welcome to this tiny backseat" is going to be the opening line to my upcoming adult movie debut
Don't forget to use some insulation tape Julian 😉
Finn, you’ve managed to make a very technical subject a fun and enjoyable watch! I’m very impressed!
Thank you dude! This subject has so many rabbit holes to get lost in, its dangerous 😅. Thank you for watching 🤘😎
Just a little detail on the boxer and flat engines. You can have ( like the Ferrari engines ) a Flat engine that is not a Boxer engine : the difference is in the crankshaft and where/how the connecting rods are attached to it, if you look at 2 opposed pistons from the side with the crankshaft in the middle in a boxer engine they would go away from each other, on a flat non boxer engine they would go from left to right together.
Still great videos on the resurrection of that 996 keep up the good work, will definitely watch the upcoming videos !!
Greetings from France !
Hello Daniel, The Ferrari Boxer not really having a Boxing engine is cool insight into nomenclature and reality. Another subscriber pointed out that the Porsche 917 in that same video does not really have a flat 12 but really a 180 degree V12 :). I found this little morsel just now, "According to engineer Mauro Forghieri, the designation "BB" did not originally mean "Berlinetta Boxer." He stated during an interview with Davide Cironi that they knew the car was not equipped with a Boxer engine. He explained the meaning of the acronym (Berlinetta Boxer) was fabricated by journalists, in reality it means Berlinetta Bialbero (dual camshaft)"
Add that one to the list of corrections I need to make in some future video 🤪 . Thank you for watching 🤘😎
@@ManinaGarage Thanks for the kind response, we all learn everyday and we should all keep seeking that mindset ! You are right about the story around the name boxer for the Berlinetta Bialbero
Subbed and waiting for future videos !
Another great video! Interesting story. For 13 years, I drove a Swift DB2 Sports 2000 in SCCA Club Racing. Simply a wonderful and fun machine. This class had a spec motor, the 2.0L Ford. Where it came from Ford at about 90 to 95 HP, we were getting just over 165 HP with engine builders magic (as you described a bit in your last video). Normally I would have the engine rebuilt every two years. One year, at the first event of the season, we had the new motor in the car and at the first practice, the engine made a horrible, horrible noise. Low and behold, I had "thrown a rod" as you say. Now, the rod does not ever leave the case, so I am not sure where the term "throw" came from, but the end of the rod really does a number on the fragile(ish) cast-iron block, that is for sure! Now rebuilds of racecar engines are always tuned and broken in on a dyno, so this engine already had a few hours of running, and we are expected to thrash them as normal when we get them. So, back to the builder with the motor! He did an autopsy, and one of the wrist pins had broken. Thank goodness the new Cosworth pistons survived, and my Corrello rods as well. I had purchased an old street engine some time ago, just to get the block as a spare (they are a bit difficult to get as you might imagine). My builder was super fair and only charged me parts for the re-re-build, and he did it in a week so I could make an event that was on my schedule. Keep building and learning, I am learning a lot!
Hello IdeaBrickworks, I want your Hobbies!! Those Swift DB2 Sports 2000 look Soooooo cool! It's amazing to think that the rods smashed a hole in your crankcase and were "Fine". There is so much to learn 😅 So many rabbit holes 🤪. Thank you for being a part of the experience 🤘😎
You are correct its for the pin/c clip on the side of the piston during installation and the other one is to hold the piston in position. You can assemble one side by hand once you get to the other bank, your going to need those tools
Thank you Mahmood! You rock!
Ok, one minute into this video, and I see I didn't need to type out that comment on the last video! Lol. Still good for the UA-cam algorithm though to have the comment I guess. You deserve some views for the entertaining content you're making!!
Gotta keep that algorithm happy 🤓🤣😂 Thank you for watching 🤘😎
A leprechauns yoga pants made me laugh out loud on the train!!!
YEEEEEEEEES! You made my week Will 🙌
Look up (search) 997 Dad videos, as you will find the one where he is installing the wrist/gudgeon pins along with the piston clips. He didn't have any fun doing it, but he did succeed on his mission and he got the job done. He like you just put his head down and went for it and you will get to see a lot that someone rebuilding one of these engines needs to see and usually doesn't. He's not a professional engine builder, but he was in for the mission. I hope this helps you out.
I was also going to mention the '997 Dad' series. He did a pretty good job with the special tools. I sure did feel his pain with the job though - I believe it took him a couple of days to get the wrist pins in!
The guy channel is caled thatLI garage
That guy is very patient, thank you for the recommendation. 🤙
I found that if you use a zip-tie cut at a 45 degree angle works perfectly on the piston landings. Chem-Dip parts cleaner melts the carbon build up away. I did a video on it.
Hello Yogi, Thank you for the awesome tips, I watched your chem Dip Video, looked like fun🤙. I ended up having the pistons Vapor Blasted to clean out the grooves for the rings properly, they look weirdly stunning right now, seems a shame to get them dirty again😂. I look forward to seeing Pepper all pretty and happy, must be nice to have a Porsche that moves 😿
@Man in a Garage Awesome! Thanks for watching 👍 I'm glad my 996 is moving as well. She is so FAST and fun to drive. I have 100% confidence you'll get yours running. I've got lots of Pepper video already in the can but my Audi project took over since I needed to get it started and moved so I can use my spot in the garage. Currently I'm using both spots and the wife is not happy about that. 😆 I'm definitely doing a 2-post lift before I drop the engine though. I won't be cutting into my lift like you did though. 😎
This is FIRE!
Thank you for watching Duderama 🤘😎
It would be nice if you shared your reasons for deciding which parts to save. Most m96 builds seem to replace pistons and cylinders. Love your work!!
Hello Josh,
Other than the rings and bearings that are obvious replacements the real controversial subject is piston replacement/sleeving. I have a whoooooole thing on that shot already that I intended on including in this weeks episode but it would have made it way toooo long. The way things are looking that will probably be in episode 24. Thank you for watching 🤘😎
@@ManinaGarage I appreciate the care you put into the series. Your thought process sounds eerily similar to mine!
I was gonna tell you about the one piece of plasticgauge, but I couldn't bring myself to, yea you should watch 997 Dad install those wrist pins and retainers with those special tools it's pretty interesting, you might want to get one of those little cameras he used while doing it
Man that must have been a cringe fest for you!! Sorry 😂. The piston wrist pin thing is starting to give me nightmares!! I think I need to call that 997 Dad Guy 😅. Thank you for watching through the cringefest 🤙
@@ManinaGarage Yes...truly cringe worthy, but in the end I was happy to see how consistent they where across the whole crank, good job
Very interesting well done 👍
Howdy Richard 🤠, Thank you for watching 🤘😎
Super informative. What I admire most about this project (and you) is we inferior humans learn more by actually doing. Jumping in and making minor mistakes. Can’t live life in fear of doing things this way.
And yes I had some thoughts about that “special tool” 🤣
Thanks for the shout out👍🏾
You are 100% right, I was afraid of working on the pistons.... not any more....Thank you for watching Nate 🤘😎
Outstanding video once again! I have always wondered what is to keep the compression rings from 'traveling'...apparently nothing. Seems like almost 'frequently' they would line up and the cylinder would lose compression for a short time. I'll ad that seeing the insides of these engines has me now adding a bottle of Sea Foam (or other brand) fuel injector cleaner or fuel system cleaner with every tank. Can't keep them too clean inside IMO. Thanks garage man!
I'm not so much into the fuel injector cleaner but i do add Lucas Cylinder lube, a little under 1oz per gallon every fill up. It claims to clean the injectors but I'm more interested in staving off bore scoring. I'm not even a fan of Lucas because of their claims but it is an oil that gives a "two stroke" effect, ring against cylinder, and the cost is about $1.50 per fill up.
In general, this whole thing makes me want to change the oil in my cars every 500 miles 🤯
Thanks for your videos👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great to hear from you Enric! You are most welcome SIR!
Hi mucker congratulations on another very entertaining video, Nearly wet myself at the "Leprechaun's Yoga Pants" lol. Have just suscribed to your channel 50 times now hopefully that will be enough to get Amber on again 🤣. Ps those special tools are for inserting your Wrist pins and clips once inserted into the case half's. Keep up the good work. Mick 👍👏🍻
Hello Mick 🙌 Thank you for spreading some light on my Pop Quiz, Mystery item 🤩, it think i need to play with that thing A BUNCH, before I do anything important with it 😅. I'm feeling pretty good about your chances with Amber this week.......
😂😂👍🛠
Yet another very well-presented video. Well done.
Greetings Lester! You Rock 🤘😎
this show is sooooo fun. You have mentioned a few times that in a past video .... I am scrambling to find all you videos. Could you help me with this. I cant find the ones you mentioned. There seems to be a few series you did
Hello, there are almost 60 porsche related videos posted to the channel. They should all be accessible from the main page. Let me know if you can or find a particular episode I will send you a link. Thank you for watching 🤘😎
Good work that man. Keep it going. Just started mine after I rebuilt it. If I can do it, you certainly can.
That seems like such a distant target right now.....Thank you for giving me hope 🙌 (And well done on your rebuild🤩 )
Bravo mate: you're slowly saying Porsche correctly (not like a Frenchman). Learning as ya go. 😘
Did you check the cylinder bores for roundness? Or look into coating the pistons as you mentioned some time ago?
Hello Erol, Funny that you noticed 🙌. The whole Por-SHa thing needed to come naturally. I have known since the start of the series "How" to pronounce Porsche properly, my body just did not want to do it 😂🤪Its just how people said it in the area where I grew up. It's beginning to feel more natural the "Correct" way now, that should help the dozen or so people I infuriate every week by butchering the name of Germanys Sports Car. Thank you for watching 🤘😎
@@ManinaGarage haha just in time for this funny video from a top car guy ua-cam.com/video/KHulgMQEf6w/v-deo.html
Maybe your pronunciation journey would be a funny video on its own? With your cartoons et all🤣 The Norman Conquest, French influence on words, even German names. LOL
@@erolfox Ha 🤣😂 Awesome! Thank you Errol 🙌, at least I am a recovering dumbass! It’s really weird you mention the organic progression of language, I literally wrote a little skit on how the English language is a mishmash of olde English, Latin, French and German and yet the rest of the world is forced to speak this Frankenstein concoction 🤯 It all started in 1066 with the battle of Hastings.......😴🤮. Thank you for the tip on Vapor Blasting, it led to all kinds of fun. 🤘😎
@@ManinaGarage yes! I think the "porsh" bit could be terrific fun! 1066 was the Norman invasion and the official language of England was actually French for 500 years. Shakespeare tried to correct it. So, speaking English means looking at words like a Frenchman. LMAO Like your journey of not knowing what a "rod" is and now, you have touch one, actually six.
More fun, a dealer shared last year 50% of the owners say "porsh", after this owner just said it, because they don't care about the car, just buying for image. But he said, "We love their money so we let them look silly."
BTW, "Errol" is an English name. Mine is Turkish. Years of trying to get people to say my name correctly and dealing with those who purposely say it wrong because they speak American.
Finally got round to watching, well done and inspiring people to have a go! I’ve clicked the ‘Subscribe’ button thousands of times if that helps!!
It would be so cool if that worked! I hope the weather is letting your "Nice" Porsche get some miles in 😎
First off, I love your videos. Very awesome. I can’t find where you set your ring gaps. Will you please inform an uninformed person what you set your ring gaps at? Thanks:-)
Hello Erik, for this engine it retained its original pistons and cylinders. After talking with Lee at Hartech he said that if I use stock rings I don’t need to gap them. I did measure 3-4 of them and found that they all were exactly right, I don’t remember what that number was 😜 This is mentioned in a video, somewhere. Try asking for the ring gap number on the rennlist.com forum or the Facebook group “porsche engine gurus” Lee jenkins is the admin on that group. Good luck with your build, feel free to send me a picture or video when she is ready to rock! Thank you for watching 🤘😎
Hello ,
again a very good video. Always very well done!
Please, keep it up !
But in your pictures you showed the Porsche 917 with the number 23 in connection with the boxer engine matter. Hopefully I don't seem like a know-it-all .
But this vehicle had a 180 degree V construction.
The 12 cylinder and turbo engines, constructes by Hans Mezger, were high-performance engines.
This performance can no longer be achieved with a boxer engine.
In his book "Porsche und ich" he described in detail the develepment of these engines.
If it is in English, I highly recommend it.
Regards,
Lothar from Franconia
Fantastic Lothar! Thank you for setting the records straight. Another subscriber said something similar about the Ferrari boxer, in that it doesn’t truly “Box”. All fascinating stuff. There are MANY Rabbit holes in this subject matter 😅. Thank you for watching!
Sorry, I should complete my comment. I mean the formula 1 TAG Turbo and not the turbos general. Of course the 6 pack turbos are boxer motors.
Come on people !! Click that LIKE button and let’s help get Amber back in the movies !!!!!
Thank you for the Team Building Jordan, It might have worked.....
Well done.
Thank you for watching 🤘😎
Hi! I just want to change my dead engine M96.20/65X to same M96.20/65w. The big proplem in this operation its camshaft sensor. I have two sensor in both camshafts, but in new same engine only one camshaft sensor in passenger side (Left hand drive). What you can recomend? Will it be the new engine without second camshaft sensor working well or not? Do you know decision exists?
Hello, sadly I am not a mechanic, I have no experience to make a decision like that. I recommend contacting Lee Jenkins at Hartech. Thank you for watching 🤘😎
Super!
He He! Thanks Buddy!
But.... shouldn’t you have clearance the whole way around? So to me it seems to make sense to do it both sides. I’m confused
That’s how I felt, but it seems that if you measure one side that’s all the clearance there is, the plastiguage takes up all the spare space within the “circle” of both bearings. Thank you for watching 😎🤘
Ah ok, I see. Interesting. I went and bought platiguage right after watching your video, haven’t used it yet, so thanks for the info.
Can't wait to see you put the case back together blind. Hopefully YOU know what all those tools are for! :)
I'm loosing sleep over that process already, thanks for reminding me MIKE! 🙌
When 20 minutes feel like 5
I can't help but feel that somehow you are going to break my legs or give me cement boots for snitching on Mr Big?? You have a powerful name....
Enjoying the videos greatly - very informative, humorous and good chance to see the actual jobs and components. One question though, who are the bikini girls?
Hi Steve, Great question, I don't want to ask them in case they stop coming over....Thank you for watching 🤘😎
The 918 has a 45degree v8 engine
In case nobody noticed, the second piston in the thumbnail is not wearing shoes, which means it’s dead.
Yes, your right Jay, Paul is always the problem.
