How can you put surprise, fear, pity , and trying to maintain composure in 1 facial expression? Anjelica Huston can. Amazing they did this scene together after their relationship. It's beautiful.
When I saw the movie, I felt that he still loved her. In the part where he calls her and says nothing, it was very clear to me. It seems that he did not stop loving her.
According to Anjelica Houston, filming this scene with Jack was very difficult for her, as she still had some resentment towards him after their break-up. But when Jack saids "We had a good one, didn't we?", she was crying as Anjelica, not as her character Mary. Anjelica truly loved Jack.
She got to move on. But he didn't. And her pitying him hurts him. Her pity makes him feel disgusted and ashamed of who is now. He used to be a husband and a father, and now all he is is an object of pity. He doesn't want her to see him like he sees himself. And so the only thing he can do to stop her pitying him is to make her hate him. Harsh is only one way of looking at it. He's falling on his sword for her. He's making it easy for her. In his own way, in the shriveled-up broken thing that used to be his heart, driving her away is an act of kindness.
Look at the control. It would be so easy to go too far here, and they don't. Perfect.
