  • Crystal Vista - an old Crystal mine, now abandoned and turned into a FREE public dig site, open 24 hours, no camping allowed, but night digging is Okay, Crystals reflect off of headlamps and are fun to dig at night.
Camping areas nearby are Crystal Recreation Area FREE (has a spring water fill-up with creek running along whole campground, Hickory Nut Mountain Campground FREE (atop a small mountain vista), Big Fir Public Use Area FREE on the lake, just to name a few.
Be prepared for a steep 20-30 minute hike up to the dig area at the top , and be careful stepping on the loose rocks. Once you reach the top, you'll notice the white quartz chips all over. choose an area that looks good and just start digging a hole and processing the rocks/dirt, or you can continue where somebody else left off. Check where others have dug too.. Ive walked up on many surface finds, people leave them there thinking they are just rocks or clumps of mud , the rainwater over time washes off and uncovers some nice crystals and clusters.
If you dig up any salamanders please place them in a moist crevice or tree root hole otherwise they will dry out and die literally within minutes if they are just set aside in the dry dirt or sun. There are A LOT here, people typically dig up a few per day. These mountains are home to many species of snakes, salamanders, and lizards - please treat them all with respect. You are a guest in their home. Respect mother natures, and maybe she will reward you with some crystals....?
    * I noticed the scene at the end looks like I came out of a hole/tunnel. I simply set the camera up on the opposite side of a fallen tree are and climbed out from under it for an optical illusion of crawling out of the ground purely for entertainment/ video purposes. Tunneling is dangerous and can lead to the hole collapsing on you. Do not dig big holes or tunnels at crystal vista, or any other mine, and digging near and under trees is illegal.*
    Tips :
Dig , Dig, and dig some more. I typically spend a full 8 hours digging, and dig for multiple days at a time. The more square footage of dirt/rock you process - the more crystals and clusters you'll find. This goes for any crystal mine. I like to use a small shovel and prybar and get a "wall" started and just dig into it. You never know what will fall out.
Spring time or Fall after rains is your best bet. The dirt gets way too rock hard / dry in the summer, and makes digging nearly impossible.
