I have a Bravo II outdrive. The diver cleans it every 4 months three times a year. Outdrive gets repainted every 2 years with zincs changed as needed. If you keep up the maintenance, they perform well. If you don’t, it could cost you thousands of dollars. If you trailer or have a boat lift, you will save a lot of money in maintenance.

I would never own a stern drive again. Way to expensive to maintain and keep over there life span. I only own straight shaft inboards.

Where I live Volvo is a no go can’t get parts. Mercruiser parts are plentiful. I run a 2011 Mercruiser 4.3 Carb with Alpha one Gen 2 in a 20 foot Stingray. Only issue I’ve ever had accelerator pump got weak picked it up at local dealer 10 minute job back on the water. My only negative the bilge is a little hard to clean cause motor sits over it. Thunder Run at Lake Cumberland each year 95% Sterndrives. Rarely see a outboard. If on ocean my view might change and probably prefer outboard.

I don't follow... We live in the digital age. Volvo parts Amazon next day delivery all day long.

Now compare Mercruiser market share vs Volvo. There's a reason .

Yeah…because Mercruiser is owned by Brunswick who makes Bayliner, SeaRay and several other “captive” makes where Volvos aren’t an option-has guaranteed transoms. Not because their old timey raw water cooled engines have made any improvements since 2015….

3:10 "Most high-performance boats are fitted with Sterndrives" I cannot stop laughing. Maybe the high-performance R/C boats at wally world. Not at the docks, that's for sure

@Kevin Falvey lol yeah sure, when the water is glassy all the sterndrive guys come out to talk. What real boat ramp do you go to where people are unloading sterndrives and setting records while fishing with the family? Pretty much every lake goer in America will concur that jet boats > Sterndrive. So much maintenance required you might as well have a second engine in the boat so you can drive while a mechanic works on the other.
      And "we" lol that's cute

Lake goer here and disagree @jarredgallaher2643 - wouldn’t touch a jet boat. Can’t maneuver well, hard to get service, lousy wake. A big Seadoo….give me a sterndrive any day. Sterndrives consistently outperform and use less fuel-these are facts. Not opinions.
And Kevin Falvey actually cites evidence, you cite conjecture.

High-performance means an Apache, an Outerlimits, MTI, Fountain Lightning…
And, Kevin Falvey, our Editor-in-Chief, was referring to the editorial team at Boating Magazine, when he said, “ we.” No cuteness intended.
