- Today I finished freeze drying batch number 500 in the Harvest Right.
I thought I would do something exciting or over the top when I got to batch 500, but it turns out I couldn't think of anything like that that I wanted to do.
So, this video is about looking forward to the next 50 batches.

Before buying a freeze dryer, perhaps research to find out more about the downside of the machine; some people have problems with their machine and it's big and heavy and hard to return!
When trying to decide what to freeze dry you can start by asking why.
Start by asking yourself this question. Why are you freeze drying food? Knowing this should help you decide what you should freeze dry first.
I'm freeze drying because:
Just to freeze dry leftovers?
You want to make your own food for camping/backpacking?
For if/when the SHTF?
For a short term emergency?
You have your own garden and want to freeze dry the food?
You love Costco but don't have a family of 6?
You are good at finding the food sales but only have 1 freezer?
When you cook homemade chili just for yourself you make 10 gallons? Because you have 3 full freezers and are worried about power outages?
If I knew then what I know now, I would have freeze dried things in a different order. Or maybe not, because I started freeze drying because we had 3 full freezers, I was thinking of getting another one, and I decided I should buy a walk-in freezer instead. I started looking into walk-ins and realized they were expensive to buy (even used ones) AND expensive to own and operate. Then I found out Harvest Right was making home sized freeze dryers. One of my first thoughts was "I like Mountain House!" I have used their food for backpacking almost 45 years and we even kept some in our travel trailer, for just in case.
Freeze dried food will stay fresh for many years and be ready and waiting when you need it.
We do videos showing how we are using our Harvest Right Freeze Dryer to freeze dry food for long term storage. (We have the medium size machine that we got in August of 2017) We talk about how to load and unload the freeze dryer, how to know if the food is dry, is it better to freeze dry raw food or cooked food, and do a few taste tests. Freeze dried food is also great for prepping or just for camping and snacking!

The new series sounds great so much to learn. Would you mind going over your storage system it seems like a manageable foot print, I struggle with storage. Thank you very much drying and rehydrating are so important
I do plan to go into this and how we find the bag we want later. (Our Warehouse Management System of 4 racks, expanding to 5 or 6 soon) Every one else's needs may be different than ours, but it's a starting place.
Your voice does not match your face. LOL. This is the first video I have watched were I actually saw you. I imagined a slender man, a little bit older, wire rim glasses and maybe a graying moustache. And wearing a baseball cap. I think I am at about 100 batches and quickly realized storage was an issue.
Ha!😀LASIK years ago, reading glasses, shaved the moustache 22 years ago, and a baseball cap when out walking! (otherwise a trilby)
Congratulations on your first 100 batches. Thanks for watching.
LOL!
I'm new to FDing and have I've learned so much from your channel [#grateful]. Thank you for sharing your experiments, tips and tricks!
PLEASE put your spreadsheet and your count sheets linked to your videos! That would be SUPER helpful! Thank you! This series is awesome. I came here looking for your setup for removing water from your vac pump. I'd still love to see that detailed with a parts list if that exists anywhere. Also do you have the 3D printer file for your paper towell filter up anywhere for download. Awesome work. Can't thank you enough.
Whelp I found the documents linked in the next video! ua-cam.com/video/hJqr1obXh-s/v-deo.html&lc=Ugx06AYHv4uitcJQkJp4AaABAg
These links are the pinned comment for all of the 50 batch series video. (unless I missed some) Are you looking for something different?

I just printed new parts for the filter yesterday. I'm still working on sharing the how-to make one.
@@SchoolReports I found the links on the next video. Thats exactly what I was looking for. I was able to eyeball your filter setup at the end of that video. I can see the gist of it but could not make out how you were pumping the oil back into the filter exactly. What kind of pump are you using and do you just switch it on when you are running a batch?
@@xsynergist Check out this one. I think it shows the most so far.

Have you found that the freeze dryer is worth the price of the machine. Would you recomend it for just two people?
It depends on the definition of "worth the price." I would say for us, or anyone that was going to store food anyway, yes - absolutely. I do a cost breakdown in the 50 batch series breakdown. ua-cam.com/video/IRkac5wrCzI/v-deo.html If you compare having a freeze dryer to buying freeze dried food, ours would more than pay for itself in less than 50 batches.
I am on batch 42! You do a great job with a variety of different foods. Thanks for sharing all you do. I have learned so much just from you. I'm going to start trying more of your ideas. Looking forward to the next 50 vidoes!
Congratulations on 42 batches. I hope it is going well for you.
I can’t wait for this series especially since our freeze dryer is on its way! Your videos are very helpful. Thank you for taking the time to share. 😊
Thanks for checking out our videos. Congratulations on your new machine.
Congrats on "500", I really enjoy your vids, and looking to watch many more!
Thanks for watching.
Very interested in what you have coming. Wow! We see your face here, you look younger than I guessed. 🤣
Good lighting!
Do you have a copy of the batch record sheet that you use? Could you make it available to users, or could you do a video covering specifically what you enter on the sheet and how you use the information.
These are the freeze drying batch worksheets I have been using: (we use the 4 tray one because our machine has 4 trays) They were made using OpenOffice. You can download them and change them in any why you want to suit your need.
I'm happy to help in any way I can. (Assuming you find it useful:)

Blue Alpine is on my list of 13 freeze dryer makers/sellers that I've looked at online.
I look forward to hearing how your machine works out for you! (Please share)
I stopped watching other people's freeze drying videos years ago, but I'll see if my sister will watch and summarize for me.
@@SchoolReports Thank you very much for sharing your form with me. I have been watching your videos and trying to read the different columns on your video (without much success). I purchased a Large Blue Alpine Freeze Dryer and picked it up last week, I really like the way you keep track of your batch info and I wanted to use a similar system myself. Your form will work well as a template for my own Batch Info Forms.
Thanks again and keep up the great work with your freeze-drying videos. I have been learning a lot from watching your videos.
@@BoydsBAFD Here is an example of how I use my worksheet for weights and calculations - ua-cam.com/video/MbGtzTnCUJ0/v-deo.htmlsi=B2tfehQTQ-tooZfR&t=1571 (I show it in videos occasionally) I weigh the food before drying, after drying, and calculate the water loss per bagged unit. (pound, half pound, etc.)
Also, here is a bit about how we do our storage racks. (Storage systems are very personal. Ours may not work for anyone else)

@@SchoolReports New subscriber, and new to freeze drying. Thank you for sharing this log sheet! It will be most helpful, as was this video. I will be watching even more of your videos, and just to let you know I am a mayo "barbarian" lol.
My Harvest Right came in Oct of 2021 and I have freeze dried pretty much most of my left overs from meals plus lots of meat.
I am interested in tagging along on your 100 pounds of food and joining in on the fun. I need 40 bins of freeze dried food too!
Thanks for watching. What's your favorite thing you've freeze dried so far?
@@SchoolReports Pineapples have been my favorite so far. Freeze drying intensifies the flavors of the food. Getting the Harvest Right was one of the best choices ever.
@@nunnabeeswax2397 Pineapples is great. Did you do canned, frozen, or fresh. We've done all of them and they're all a bit different. Freeze dried apples may be my favorite snack.
I thought HR said the bottom and top tray dries quicker.
In mine they are pretty even, with the bottom, maybe, being a little slower.
I'm so excited for your new content! I just got a freeze dryer at the beginning of the month and this info will assist me greatly. Thank you for your Mr. Roger's approach to freeze drying!
Thanks! We had a good laugh at " Mr Rogers" and then we thought - Ya I can kind of see it! Next time I should change my shoes before I start.
@@SchoolReportshaha that would be fantastic!
@@SchoolReports Changing shoes and putting on a sweater is perfect! Thanks for sharing. Just received our unit yesterday! Cant wait to try it out.
@@jeanette1138 Maybe next April.🤣
Getting my freeze dryer in a few days. You, sir, are my hero.
The older I get (46 now), the more 'boring stuff' excites me.
@@emailausdrucker Ha! Thanks for watching. (I've been watching Townsends 18th century cooking!)
