Flying the XK X450 is just like jumping out of an Airplane without a parachute. You can only do it once.
I LOVE THIS COMMENT. LMFAO. Good one.
Is that mean you can only crash it once and can't fix it
I own a xk x450 and I love it. It too crash and broke the servos however I ordered more metal servos and replaced them. I recommend buying this plane because it’s fun to fly and gets a lot of attention but go ahead and order more servos up front.
Thanks I’ll definitely get the servos - I got mine for free to review, but I tried to put myself in the shoes of someone who just spent $100+ on this thing. I just didn’t want to totally advocate for it since I’m a little tired of companies cheaping out and assuming the buyer will fix it later. XK has been in the game for a long time and they knew what they did here, I think. It’s a pretty terrible design flaw otherwise I think it would be a solid 100% recommend on my end. It’s a lot of fun! I was really enjoying it until I crashed. Cheers and thanks for the input.
@@JohnCuppi the real bummer here is that if they had made a $1000 version and it had DJI style electronics and quality then I would buy it. Instead I'm flying my third crappy one that I have changed to metal servos. I really wish DJI had made a version of it..😢.
@@tapmad If you really love the VTOL concept you should check out the Heewing T1 Ranger plane and the VTOL kit. It has a steep learning curve to set it all u yourself, but it's definitely the way to go.
I love mine, however, I can confirm exactly the same failure shown in this video. I’ve done it twice. The right metal gear servos are hard to find. I’ve also broken the plastic actuator in a mild crash. Honestly, if you want to fly this plane a while, stay away from airplane mode. It’s too fast and lacks the responsiveness and crashworthiness. Otherwise, it’s great. It’s good to be aware before you buy. Maybe someone will design something that can survive these dinky little crashes. BTW, I did put an AIO camera and flew FPV. A little shaky, but doable.
cool little bird and nice drone work with the mavic =)
Thank you I think it turned out pretty okay :)
Pretty crazy. For the price you think they would’ve went with some metal gears in there. Great honest review John talk to you soon buddy
Be safe and take care.
“For the price”??? It’s $170 with a controller. You can’t find a vtol anywhere for that price. Metal gear Servos adds another $30 to the price.
For the price? It's almost impossible to find this kind of technology that cheap. This is so inexpensive. The RC hobby is not for people that live paycheck to paycheck. This thing is so expensive. You need to get a better job.
Great flying John. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! It’s not so great that I crashed since I can’t fly airplane mode right but at least it revealed a very sad flaw in this model.
Awesome little flyer. Thanks for sharing :)
Cheers!
Too bad about the cheap gears, looked promising!! Thanks for the honest review!!
It’s too bad. Hey, how’d you like the MA2 footage of the plane?
I crashed mine a few times and the gears are just fine. It’s one of the coolest little planes I own (I own a few hobby grade planes, gps, etc.).
Are they still making them with plastic gears? I think it strongly depends on how you crash, but would have been almost a non issue with metal gears. I agree I love the plane but it still sits in the box, I just never got around to fixing it.
Just btw, these things can lift at least their own weight in hover mode!!! I put about 320gm on its back and she took off no trouble. Engines had to work quite hard but she did it so if you're thinking of putting 100gm of fpv in it you'll have NO PROBLEMO!
I was thinking of putting a caddx vista DJI unit on it (30g) so that’s cool to know.
Looks like it flies really well, pity about the servo selection they chose but as like you mentioned, a simple metal gear servo swap will rectify that issue easily
Thanks David 👌🏻a simple fix, but should have been done from the start.
@@JohnCuppi i totally agree
No it won't Dave. Once you fix the servo gears you'll find a lot more gossamer on this fairy! :D
Plastic servos suck. I almost bought this but not now. Thanks for the info
Oh yeah and the motors going to balls out after a crash and the throttle having no control over them really makes for a good time as well.
I'm not sure why but I feel like you edited out the part were you forced the rotor back into position, therefore breaking the teeth off that gear. I see no other reason why they would have "grinded out" besides being faced with the force of you trying to put back, just saying. I watched a video of another guy flying his and crashing it multiple times. Yet because he unplugged and put them back properly there was no issue. Im not hating just saying. I do agree that they should have put better servos with the metal gears in them in the first place though, hate when companies cheap out smh.
Great job John, lol before the crash.
Haha thanks 👍🏻
That was heartbreaking. It looked so awesome it felt like one of those items I had to have and then......it happened. Good video though
Thanks, hope it gave an honest viewpoint :)
@@JohnCuppi It was super honest but man that thing made me sad it was doing so well
What do you expect for 145 dollars? Its dirt cheap. For the price it is packed full up features. It's really inexpensive. I have the eEflite version thats kinda the same. It costs a lot more but performs a lot better and when you crash. You have to crash pretty hard. It's also almost impossible to crash with the safe mod and recovery mode. It flies like on rails in Airplane mode and hovers just like a typical try copter.
That’s good for you, I guess you liked it - I didn’t. I’ve spent $150 and less on models that weren’t so easy to break - to each their own I suppose!
Thanks. Good review. Nice honest review. Seems like good toy until you crash it once.
Bummer it looks like fun. Maybe if the upgraded servos aren't too expensive...
They are linked in my desc and are about $6. The work to do it is more annoying than anything and the wait from the slow boat to deliver them.
I'm pretty disappointed at the fact this has been out for years and they have never bothered to fix some of the programming bugs in the flight controller. Other XK models like the XK a160 had some really bad rudder issues causing V1 to spiral and crash and they fixed that in the first year but they won't do anything with this one leading to many people crashing first day out.
What a damn shame that the servos use plastic gears so they strip on a crash. You been get by with plastic gears for steering in a toy car but not something like this. They should have used one with metal gears. A real shame because it seems to fly great and the MA 2 footage was an awesome touch!!
Thank you! 👍🏻
nicePlan! i love!
I like it too - a shame about the gears. Thanks.
Didn't have good experience with this model. Not only the model flimsy so is it's electronics. With less than 10 flight , the main PCB smoke without any reasons. I bought a replacement main board and now the right motor don't seem to spin right at power. It's running power seem low and then sometimes the motor would stop while the left was spinning normally. Open up to access the ESC board. Everything looks normal but the motor won't spin properly. Don't know what wrong. Should I spend more to replace the ESC or turn this model to be my spare parts? Truly disappointed with this model.
very cool review . That sucker goes, sucky gears
I like the different modes, shame about the plastic gears, making it not very durable ! 🤔😯
I was really enjoying the way this thing flew, especially in the wind. I was thinking I should one for the fall flying season, and then the crash. That's really a shame they ruined a pretty good product with cheap plastic gears, some of these companies will never learn. Great review John, and thanks for telling it like it is.
Thank you Ron, hope you’re having a great day at the beach!
Best to replace the servos with metal gears ⚙ 👍
XK is still around?
I think they gave up on drones and have been really pushing these planes. I owned the large size version of this as well from a different vendor who sent it, but never got around to reviewing it.
I may have to invest in one
People still seem to love this one despite the issue with the gears . They get the vtol, the metal geared servo that I linked and they’re happy. I personally didn’t love this one THAT much to bother with it much 🤷🏻♂️ but I’m more of a quad guy than a plane or wing one.
Drone Camps RC has the fix for those gears.
Yes, that's where I found the link to the alternative servo with metal gears. It is ridiculous that this upgrade is basically required. My crash was almost nothing compared to his and they stripped immediately! 👎
@@JohnCuppi When you order your metal gear servos be sure to order a couple of sets of the plastic fittings for her as well. The ones around the front servos (and the tail motor boom) also crap out with Banzai! landings! :o
Great fun to fly once in a while but glad we've got the X520s to play with while we're waiting for the slow sampan! ;-)
@@theoztreecrasher2647 will do, thank you. at least the parts for this are all easy to purchase
For a $119.00 I'll pass ! Thanks John , you just saved me some hard earned $ ! 👍👍
I’m glad. I would feel very bummed out if I had actually purchased this. It flew SO well though that since I got it for review I’ll likely fix it.
Great review John. Yep, way to easy to break.
It flew so nice. Wish they didn't cheap out and do something so stupid. Can't imagine that servos that we're able to buy for $3-$6 retail price individually would have cost them much of anything to fit this with the correct servos...
I’m flying evo 2 6k Nice unit
Wow that’s a big step up from blade chroma! How do you like it so far? I finally bought a DJI Mavic Air 2 and it’s what was used to film the plane here.
Great review John. When I saw the heading and then I watch the video I almost thought you were funning 🤔 then you had that small crash and the servo broke 😕 can’t believe they put such cheap servos in a nice flying little bird like that, if they just went the extra step and put servos like the ones in your link they would’ve got a great review it seems like 🤷🏻♂️. Thanks for doing the review 👍🏽
Thank you Mr. DeNardo for the excellent comment. Honestly I'm not fuming because I spent $0 on this, it was supplied for review, I am angry for all the people who bought it though and had no idea about this problem.
I see servo gear is very fast damage
Yeah, the gears are plastic, needs to be replaced with a better servo using metal gears.
The design ìs good but the materials and electronis use is very wrong.
Since I bought this model. I burn a main board, 2 esc . Servo horn cracked at the join. Propeller disintegrate in mid flight.
Changing the propeller is a grunt....the propeller is stuck to the motor.
Not recommended for anyone till all the weak problem are fix. Yes the manufacturer use cheap plastic gears, propeller, servo horns.
Totally shameful and garbage!😢
Trim the nails dude?
I keep forgetting to trim them down.
