This game is one of my favourites, funny I play the Dreamcast ver 2 emulated on my XBOX Series S with retroarch (I also can emulate the GC version too!) I really wanted this game to be added to the backwards compatibility list for XS but sadly MS aren’t adding anymore games. Hilariously I can join private servers on retroarch with the Dreamcast version and now it allows me to use any USB keyboard too!
I still play PSO v2 on my Dreamcast (offline) the original xbox version was the best as it had Episode II. Gutted I sold it now as it looks better on the Xbox than DC IMO.
Yeah, I believe when I made this video, Insignia wasn’t ready to the public. I’m glad that it’s working fine now, it makes this version just as good to play as the others!
@@TheDaliPopka Yeah. I mean, you had to buy the Ethernet adaptor separately for the PS2 but the GameCube was the same. The Xbox was the only 6th gen console with an Ethernet port right out of the box.
@@TheDaliPopka well i guess maybe Sony was Sega's Direct competitors especially after rejecting Play Station(yes with space) technology not to mention just a year after Dreamcast(wich this game originallu relased) PS2 born and then Xbox(wich some says as Sega of america Sabotation thing)
I remember always wanting to play this back in it's hey day but being too young to afford the subscription cost the game charged to play online. Awesome review Dali, you almost had me there for a minute at the beginning.
Yay, Popka reviews every JRPG on the original Xbox in a single video! Okay, jokes aside, I know people were salty about PSO 2 being Xbox One exclusive, but the series has always had Xbox versions, Phantasy Star Universe was on the 360, after all. Also, this game has the bizarre distinction of being one of the only games to be on GameCube and Xbox but not PS2. It's a shame about that lame Gamer Tag restriction, I would have loved to play through this on the Big Green
I played phantasy star on Genesis and the xbox one version thats out now. But never got to play this from dreamcast or xbox. I'm trying to get a complete collection for the big green but sux I won't be able to play this one. I didn't go online until 360. Looks really good with friends tho
I have a game tag still on my Xbox so I was really lucky. This is an awesome game to play with a friend per multiplayer. Wonder if X link Kai has ppl playing online still?
Just a heads up; NTSC copy of the game is required to apply the exploit. As a PAL gamer, I can confirm that the Europ/Aus releases do not work with the hack. I had to import the USA copy to play this. Or... you can be a dirty pirate and use the internet for the 'other' method ;)
Damn, I never knew that, another tidbit that never showed up when I made my copy….then again, sailing the seas for Big Green treasure is probably the better bet these days! 😆
Played Xbox and GameCube versions online back in the day. Vastly preferred the aesthetics of the Dreamcast version. Thé coloration of the Xbox version seemed a bit odd compared to the other versions. Also did not like that you could only play with people in your country on the Xbox version. Meanwhile on GC you could play with anyone anywhere
Greenill for me. Frozen shooter hildetoor ultimate mode forest. Farmed so many in forest of sorrow I had like 8 Frozen shooters. Different % one I'm proud of is 25 hit.
This had the Sonic demo. Yeah, it was stupid it needed Live, otherwise we all could’ve replayed our team going after that dragon again and that one guy going in headfirst to get killed in one hit! 🤣
The only game i have played in the series is Phantasy Star Universe and I can see how it evolved from the original games. Have you tried New Genesis on an Xbox One yet? I think it looks pretty good but have not yet even though its free.
I noticed on your playlist you have 122 VF episodes. How many total OG Xbox games do you have in your collection and how many total games were actually released for the Big Green? Is it your goal to review the entire the library of games? Love the channel and consistent uploads my friend!
Thanks for the kind words! I have about around 200 games in my collection, though I had a little more. As I’ve playing them, I sell the ones I know I’m not going to play again since I’d rather them be in the collection of someone who wants them. Anything else, my modded Xbox has been of great use. ;) But yes, my goal is to cover the NA Xbox library, with a few imports sprinkled in. :)
I wanted to ask you for awhile now, how are you still playing the majority of these games? Is your console still in working order or has it required fixing? I myself have two working big greens and two that SOMETIMES work. I am thinking long term and would like to be playing my big greens decades from now.
I have 2 boxes, the first one's disc drive isn't that great, but the other has been keeping strong for quite a while now. Eventually, I need to get a few more in case something happens.
@@TheDaliPopka Yeah, Dude...That's the only drawback of this system. Otherwise, it beats the PS2 in my book. (Except in the category of game library.) I know you can buy refurbished systems online, but as far as I know, the lasers that this system uses haven't been made for awhile now.
So, wait, how did you actually play this? I bought this years ago and was devastated when that screen showed up. I have been thinking about getting the Gamecube version ever since but I didn´t know if it would be the same.
I briefly explained it, but the longer version is there's a patch you can add to the ISO of the game that allows you to play it offline on a modded Xbox. It tricks the game thinking there's a valid gamertag available, letting you play offline. :)
This game is most definitely worth playing today do not listen to this man maybe not the Xbox version but if you emulate it you can still play on private severs so it’s like playing back in the day
You actually don't even need a modded Xbox! You can create a GamerTag on PC and move it to your Xbox. I followed this video to make it work and put my current GT on my Xbox in preparation for Insignia when it goes live! ua-cam.com/video/QBgFnz678-Q/v-deo.html
Damn you Gamer Tags!!! I suppose if you can manage the work around, then it’s not so bad, but that was quite a jerk move on Microsoft’s part to push that Xbox Live
From what little I could find, it had something to do with the Japanese release of the game, but there’s not much info on it, which is why I didn’t bring it up in the video.
The only think I can think of is your profile, or maybe a profile on your Xbox, had a live account. I know it sounds crazy that this version requires it. I remember buying it when it first came out and returning it that same day because it required live. I actually found an article that explains why they did this and it's kinda lazy on Sega's part: www.gamespot.com/articles/microsoft-announces-phantasy-star-online-details/1100-2909988/
I've always been crazy interested in PSO - actually never realised it was playable in split screen! Time to get the boys around!

Thanks to the new program Insignia, you can now play this game without having a modded version or a gamertag already saved.
Yeah, I believe when I made this video, Insignia wasn’t ready to the public. I’m glad that it’s working fine now, it makes this version just as good to play as the others!
This is one of the very few, rare games available on both the Xbox and the GameCube but not on the Playstation 2.
Which is odd because I feel that the PlayStation 2 could’ve handled it
