I have also learned that to always keep you stomach a little full. Eat small portions throughout the day just to keep your stomach busy. I heard this from a crew member.
Great advice for seasickness. I would add, try the Bonine, Dramamine, or other OTC meds before the cruise to see how they affect you (drowsy, dizzy, headache, etc.).
IF you take Dramamine, start the day before. It will be in your system(a pharmacist suggested this when we went on our cruise). OR you can take it the morning before you depart.
I use the patches...they last 3 days then you have to put on a new one. They aren't cheap! And I'll warn you...they make me talk in my sleep and animate me in my sleep! LOL
I've been cruising since I was 20, over fifty years ago. (remember Cathy Lee Gifford?) and consider myself very knowledgeable about Cruising here in the states as well as overseas, and in addition, I also am an avid fan of all the UA-cam cruise "Vloggers" and I can attest with 100% certainty that LLANA IS THE NUMBER ONE BEST, MOST ACCURATE, MOST TIMELY, and MOST INFORMATIVE cruise guru on the web!!

My cousin was on a boat trip, her daughter got very seasick. The tour guide sat her down put a cool wet towel around her neck, gave her some green apple and made her smell rubbing alcohol. It worked! Doesn't hurt to have some alcohol wipes with you just in case.
I have severe motion sickness, wore 2 seabands, a motion sick patch and Dramamine and was still sicker than a dog, on my last cruise a few months ago. If you have bad motion sickness, just skip cruises, they're miserable! I spent most of the time in my cabin, sleeping.
I went on a cruise about 6 weeks ago (January) in the Caribbean. The first day unpacking set me off and I was feeling really queasy. I took Dramamine and it knocked me out!! We had one other rougher day and I took it again during the day and I regretted it because again, I slept the day away. This time we leave in 10 days and I have the kind you suggested and got some ginger chews. We boat a lot on lakes and things and even when I’m looking down making a sandwich for the kids I get sick. Thankfully I have not been throwing up or anything! I love the water so it doesn’t stop me. I love your videos!
Also, here in the US we do not need a RX for the ear patches. I ordered some from Amazon and on my very first cruise they helped a lot. I have those as well because they don’t effect being tired and I don’t have to think about them once they are on.
After I got off my first cruise I suffered from hyper motion, I felt like I was moving up and down while walking on a flat surface. I suffered with it for about a month before seeing my doctor and getting meds. The second cruise I used the sea bonds the entire cruise. It helped tremendously.
I didn't know about the acupuncture. Be careful with the patches that adhere behind your ear. They cause cause your eye to dilate on some people. The wrist bands are also good.
I grew up on the water, therefor I don't seasick. However, I do tend to not drink enough water when cruising. I take Liquid IV packs for hydration. they work really well to keep you hydrated
Just got back from my 2nd cruise. Was seasick on both. The first time I used Seabands and the drops behind the ears . Both helped. This time I used Bonine and it worked like a charm. It didn't make me drowsy at all but I did sleep like a baby, even with the ship rocking and rolling. I took off the sea bands. One of our waiters did suggest green apples which he said worked for him when he first started working on the ship. The ship's engine vibrations actually bother me just as much but the Bovine does the trick. The reception desk was giving out Meklezin, which is the same thing I think.
My husband has motion uses. He starts taking Dramamine the day before we leave in the cruise and he takes it before he goes to bed. And then he uses motioneze as needed during the day. It’s a lavender herbal aid that he applies behind his ears. These two things really seem to help him to feel normal on the cruise.
Thank you for these tips and tricks. I have cruised for many years. In my old age, Ive remarried. My husband loves adventures as long as they're on land. What?!!!! For the past 4 years I've been trying to be okay with this. However, I miss cruising so much. We've discussed taking a 3 day cruise to the Bahamas for my birthday. He is very nervous about being sick the entire time. His only experience with cruising is a day cruise that he went on in the early 90s. I'm hoping that with these tips and the fact that today's ships are so much more stable he will enjoy it so much he will want to go again and again. Fingers crossed! Thanks again Janice from Orlando, Florida.
We've used the Scopamine patches which in the US do require a doctor's prescription. They need to be replaced every 3 days and should be worn before boarding the ship.
Sea bands are a must for me. I do not get sea sick with them on. One cruise was very rough and the crew was green and begging me for my sea bands. I did not get sick with them on.
Bonine chewables are great. I take one when i get on the boat and it’s non drowsy. Scopalamine patches are not OTC and you have to see your primary doctor. These days lots of visits can be done over the phone as Telehealth. Also is you have glaucoma Scopqlqmine patch is not for you. Talk to your doctor about other options. Patches can be placed behind your ear or your lower arm. Small snacks with sips of ginger ale are very helpful as well as Tums. Good luck and happy sailing ⛵️🥰
I get seasick and motion sick easily. After research I found wearing one earplug and dramimine worked for my cruise. I did not get sick or dizzy at all. The last cruise I went on I took the dramimine alone and was still sick.
I use sea bands and ginger chews. An old sailors remedy is to stand in the front of the ship with the wind blowing in your face. I also go to the acupuncturist and get a patch with a ball bearing in it. It definitely helps
I have used all the products your mentioned. I started with the patch, which you need a prescription to get. You need to wear them at least the day before your trip. Bonine works very well, but I have forgotten to use them before a trip, and have suffered for it. I have chosen, sea bands. I put them on at the airport. They work great. I wear them most times on the ship, and take them off on excursions, or when I don't feel the need to wear them. Thank you so much for all the good advice,
My husband gets terribly sea-sick and on our first cruise he used Scopolamine patches prescribed by our doctor (it was rather expensive, but totally worked) but...PLEASE wash your hands after handling them because a rather scary side effect was one dilated eye from the medication. We ended up rushing to the ER thinking it was a stroke or something worse whenever we got home when I noticed the dilated eye. Turns out, it is harmless side effect from (most likely) touching his eye after handling the medication patch without washing his hands first. Now we have them in case he needs them, but he prefers to use sea-bands now...which seem to help him tremendously! Thanks for all the wonderful tips!
Ginger works for e, but I use raw ginger from the grocery store. A dollar's with lasts the entire cruise, just slice of small pieces, suck them then chew them up and swallow.
I live by the Patch, wife puts one me before we even board the ship. And change the patch every 4 days. If it falls off for any reason, like what happened to me once. Don't hesitate and replace it. My Doctor knows me well enough, he supplies me with an extra.
Love the patches too. They never let me down. Although, I noticed that after the fourth day the part of my ear that has the patch is a little tender . Does that happen to you ?
Now Dramamine has a non-drowsy pill which is actually 1000 mg ginger capsules. I agree with all your recommendations, except the patch. I asked my doctor about prescribing it but he said one side effect is difficulty with urination. A friend who used the patch on a cruise had another side effect was her eyes got dilated, like when you get your eyes checked. She had to wear sunglasses even at night. I like the sea bands and the ginger candies, as well as ginger tea. Acupuncture also does help.
Your eyes will get dilated if you put the patch on and touch your eyes. It’s a prescription medication. You must wash your hands and the area behind your ear before putting it on. More importantly, you must wash your hands after putting the patch on. The instructions tell you to make sure you do not touch your eyes after putting the latch on, before washing your hands. The patch last 3 days.
I tried the ginger ale trick! It worked pretty well too! The ginger settled my stomach and the carbonation made me burp which released some pressure! I did have ginger Candy on hand and spread it around to the family we were traveling with and they said it worked well! Our Hawaiian cruise going between islands was our worst so far for waves and wind ! We about bought out the Bonine in the the gift shop! This cruise I’m buying everything ahead of time! 👍👍👍. You’re great btw! So helpful!
Oh my goodness, I’m going on a Hawaiian cruise next year, NCL’s Pride of America! Very concerned about seasickness, as my mom booked a cabin at the very front of the ship! Before we really thought about getting seasick 🙈 Hoping using all these tips will help!
I enjoy your videos and have learned quite a bit. My husband and I love rough seas and we’re very lucky that we never get sea sick. One thing for me that helps is looking out at the horizon and not look down at the sea. Our kids and grandkids all get seasick, and therefore do not like cruising. It’s really too bad. Thanks, Sandra
I am ill every cruise. Nothing orally works but patches do. In Canada you can buy them over the counter. About 14.99 for 2 patches at Walmart. Works every time!!
Found I needed something for sea sickness on our last cruise. I had already packed some motion sick tablets and worked well. Already packed some for our next cruise on March 4th. Thanks for your great ideas and information.
Since sea-sickness and vertigo are closely related this might help, and it's non-medical. They're called the Cawthorn Eye Exerises--you can Google them. I've used them for years to treat my vertigo and just doing a few days of the first-level exercises and I start getting some relief. I'll be a first-time cruiser this summer, and I plan on doing the exercises religiously for a few weeks before the cruise.
Lee, thanks for sharing. I have vertigo quite often so I’ll google these exercises. I came here to tell you I was shocked to have NO issues on my one and only cruise March 2020! I wish the same for you; good luck and have fun! I only took medicine the night before we boarded but realized it didn’t mix well with my drink package even though several hours had passed:-) I felt the ship move one rough night but it wasn’t bothersome. My second cruise is in 10 days so crossing my fingers!!
I just discovered that there are withdrawal effects from the scopolamine patches. I wore them for 6 days and felt very light headed the first day without, as if my blood pressure was really low. It is mentioned in the package insert, but not mentioned by my Dr or pharmacist.
Great advice and I am definitely going to pack some ginger candies. I'm prone to motion sickness now and then and I find that not eating anything too rich before I travel helps or have some ginger or peppermint tea helps settle my stomach.
The green apple solution is new to me. I will definitely try that. On my last cruise a few years ago, I tried to avoid the balcony because I am terrified of water but oddly focusing at the horizon calmed my sea sickness a bit. I moved around a lot so I did not feel the sea movement (but that was before I developed vertigo). I've recently started getting vertigo and it crops up at odd times when I am not doing anything strenuous. I am worried about going on a cruise again. I may try the acupuncture route. PS. I like your video set up and taking note of it . The same height, lighting etc. consistently. I've been working from home off and on for 2 years and I am amazed that people are still not properly set up for video meetings.
I bring Dramamine non- drowsy and less drowsy / original that I’ll take before I go to sleep. I was one of the few people that didn’t have to throw up when the cruise ship tender was rocking back and forth in Mexico.
I get it when I get off the ship and then use the seabands for a couple of days. My husband started using the patch after our third cruise after being so sick for the first two and now he asks when our next cruise is.
Many years ago my parents and I went on a cruise, unknown to us we were headed for a cyclone and would be sailing through it. I spent 3 days sick in bed. My father called the doctor over these 2 days and was given an injection unfortunately didn't have any effect on me. A fellow passenger learner of my seasickness and knocked on our door and gave me a very small tablet. Unsure what it was but omg it worked. The 3rd day my body threw in a migraine headache. Put me off cruising for many years. Luckily now over the past years I went and got a script for seasick pills and have used kwells for my son and green apples and ginger. Also found ginger and lemon tea bags were very helpful.
We are embarking on our first ever cruise next February. Eastern Caribbean from New Orleans. I am so hoping I don’t have this problem! But I also definitely plan on having some Boning and Dramamine with us!!
Thanks always for your practical advice, Ilana. I’m not prone to motion, especially seasickness but always take precautions like taking a tablet before sailing and when waking on a sea day. And some other ways also as you suggest, which I’ll take on board. June of London, UK.
I am the kind of person who gets motion sickness from the spinning of the earth. I have few problems on the ship, but like you mentioned, the excursions and tender ports are tough. Scopamine patches do require a doctor's Rx in the US, I tried them once and am allergic to them. When I had severe nausea from medial treatments, I used "Pregnancy Drops." Hard Candy from the baby section of the store. I think they are ginger based, but they really helped. And don't tough it out, start treatment early!
I'm just catching up on your videos as I was out at sea when this one was posted, a cruise where I experienced motion sickness a couple of the days. In the past I used to use sea bands and psi bands (same concept as sea bands) and found that they worked fairly well. But then I discovered the ReliefBand which works so much better for me. So the ReliefBand is my go to and I bring along some Bonine as a back up. A number of years ago, I also went through acupuncture to treat other completely unrelated issues I had that had an unexpected side effect of eliminating my motion sickness for a couple years. I'm not sure what specific acupuncture treatment contributed to helping my motion sickness but it was a great benefit for a couple years!
I have suffered from motion sickness my entire life and I was worried about cruising for the first time but I have sea bands also and I always have Dramamine which both work well for me. Something that helps me is chewing gum.
sea bands worked for me on a small casino cruise day and I went on my first cruise in 2016 and hurricane Matthew was rough, but I put the sea bands on and felt awesome!!!
I am able too get motion sickness patches from Amazon. I don't recall how often I changed them most likely I changed them if they came off in the shower. Chewed ginger gum, and green apples. That's a big tip, don't look down and watch the waves. I've been on three cruises. Did nothing the first cruise, didn't know any better, got sick, and had vertigo for a week after on dry land. 2nd cruise did the patches, gum, and green apples. Just a touch of sickness and some vertigo. 3rd cruise did the same, roughest seas of the three cruises and I did real good. i also had dramamine in my bag, but never used it, because I was afraid of the drowsiness.
Thank you very much, I too deal with vertigo, and am worried that the patch might not be enough. I am definitely going to check into the accupuncture because that would definitely be helpful... Once again, Thank you so very much!!
For motion sickness/sea sick on cruises, get a “pressure point bracelet”. I have used it on every cruise in my life and they work every time! The pressure point prevents nausea and keeps you on your “sea legs” so to speak :)
I carry all of the things you’ve said but knock on wood we don’t suffer from seasickness… but I have loaned bands given away Bonnie and shared ginger. The green. Apple trick seems to work but have never been sick so I have no reference.
I get motion sickness 😷 very easily. I use powdered ginger capsules (you can find them in vitamin area of store) and if this doesn't work I use Relief Band - it gives you an electric shock on the pressure point. The patch requires a prescription but like Bonine & Dramamine they all make me drowsy and extreme cotton mouth.
The scopalamine patch must be doctor ordered. CHANGING IT EVERY THREE DAYS IS A PAIN. I wear one for vertigo. You will notice when the patch has to be changed.
On my first cruise, the only thing I could find were OTC patches that went behind your ear. I wore one during a storm but just in case but really didn't need it. I have taken many cruises since and never had to use again. But I always take something just in case!
Great advice. Think I will invest in some sea bands to compliment the over the counter medication I take with me. I don’t like chewing gum but I’ve heard that helps too. Also on next cruise going to get some apples for the cabin too.
My doctor gave me prescription Meclizine and it works on cruise ships. I have severe motion sickness, on a land trip to Italy, we drove from Naples, Italy to Amalfi and that road was one curve after another, sharp turns and 30 minutes into it I was ready to barf. I wish I would have known, I would have never took that tour or taken the medicine. Also do NOT take the road from Maui to Hana in Hawaii. The road curves, switchbacks, it’s terrible and for me, not worth it to have that dizzy feeling for 2 or 3 days afterwards. The only thing that works for me it’s the Meclizine, all the other OTC including the bands have not worked. Maybe it’s because my motion sickness is severe. (I cannot travel by train, unless it is a dry fast moving train)… yes, it’s bad.
I always use the scoplamine ear patch. It seems to work the best for me. One patch ( on ) will last four days ...then I take it off and the medication will last another two days without the patch on. It does give you a dry mouth, just sip fluids or eat hard candy or chew gum. The scoplamine patch comes in a three pack and is Dr ordered. I'd like to try the bonine next time...or wrist band .🤔

Did your mother -in -law take any preventative meds in addition to the acupuncture? Like Dramamine before she boarded?
I have also learned that to always keep you stomach a little full. Eat small portions throughout the day just to keep your stomach busy. I heard this from a crew member.
Good idea!
Peppermint helps with motion sickness as well. During my pregnancies, just the smell of peppermint gave me a little relief.

Oh my goodness, I’m going on a Hawaiian cruise next year, NCL’s Pride of America! Very concerned about seasickness, as my mom booked a cabin at the very front of the ship! Before we really thought about getting seasick 🙈 Hoping using all these tips will help!
I did it all, sometimes it’s just best to take it and take a nap you’re stomach settles right after
I enjoy your videos and have learned quite a bit. My husband and I love rough seas and we’re very lucky that we never get sea sick. One thing for me that helps is looking out at the horizon and not look down at the sea. Our kids and grandkids all get seasick, and therefore do not like cruising. It’s really too bad. Thanks, Sandra
Lucky you! For the kids, if seas are calmer would they be ok? They may do well with seabands
Sea band, ginger chews and Bonine
I do get a Rx and it works well
I use the Seabands for air travel as well.
Great to hear! True, flying can give motion sickness too
I am ill every cruise.
Awesome! Have a wonderful cruise!!
I also have Vertigo and sea sickness
Oh poor you! Are you able to cruise and feel ok?
The last cruise I went on had an acupuncturist. He put something behind my ear which worked great. They were little pins.
The patch gave me blurred vision on a Windjammer cruise
I use ginger tablets, they work great.
Great to hear!
We use bonnie it works great
Thanks for sharing!!
They sell a kids version of Drama mine in the US, just an aside. I've found it at Walmart or Target.
I’ve never been on a cruise but Seabands are a life saver when I was pregnant. I was a total skeptic and couldn’t get over how well they worked.
So glad to hear!
My wife uses sea bands all the time when we are on cruises.
I just discovered that there are withdrawal effects from the scopolamine patches. I wore them for 6 days and felt very light headed the first day without, as if my blood pressure was really low. It is mentioned in the package insert, but not mentioned by my Dr or pharmacist.
Use dramamine regularly but plan to add green apples and ginger to the rotation. Thanks for this.
Ilana, thank u for all yr videos. They’ve helped with things I need to take with me. Yr amazing
Great advice and I am definitely going to pack some ginger candies. I'm prone to motion sickness now and then and I find that not eating anything too rich before I travel helps or have some ginger or peppermint tea helps settle my stomach.
The crystalized ginger works very well.
Good idea. I haven’t heard too much about peppermint tea yet. Thanks for sharing
This is an amazing list!!! Thank you so much for sharing these tips!
The scopolamine patches I received say to replace at 72 hours. (and alternate ear locations)
I have used the sea bands and yes they work!!
Thanks for sharing your experience!!
Poor you! It sounds like you’ve found what works for you, thank goodness
Thanks June for sharing what you do. I imagine seas can get rough sometimes when leaving from Southampton. Do you usually cruise from the UK?
I am the kind of person who gets motion sickness from the spinning of the earth. I have few problems on the ship, but like you mentioned, the excursions and tender ports are tough. Scopamine patches do require a doctor's Rx in the US, I tried them once and am allergic to them.
When I had severe nausea from medial treatments, I used "Pregnancy Drops." Hard Candy from the baby section of the store. I think they are ginger based, but they really helped.
And don't tough it out, start treatment early!
Oh poor you! Yes the same things that work for pregnancy nausea seem to also work for seasickness
So glad to hear what helps for you! I’m sure it’s helpful to others as well :)
sea bands worked for me on a small casino cruise day and I went on my first cruise in 2016 and hurricane Matthew was rough, but I put the sea bands on and felt awesome!!!
Great to hear they worked so well
I am able too get motion sickness patches from Amazon.
I use bonine and sea bands, green apples. Saltines and hydrate
Awesome!!
Lol, it’s great to be so well prepared that you’re able to supply others. Nice people on a cruise 😊😉
I love Motion Ease. Rub behind the ears. Great for flights too. Used on my kids when we cruised.
Thanks for sharing. Checking this out!
Good to know! Thanks for sharing your experience:)
I couldn’t get the patch to stay on my body!
Re the Trans Derm Scope (Scopolamine) my doctor advised that it only be used for 3days. Any longer the possibility of causing you to become delirious.
Great tips, thank you!!
Great advice. Think I will invest in some sea bands to compliment the over the counter medication I take with me. I don’t like chewing gum but I’ve heard that helps too. Also on next cruise going to get some apples for the cabin too.
Yes you’re right. I’ve heard also of people saying chewing gum is helpful. Thanks for sharing
I like to bring Bonine or Marzine.
Dramamine makes me to sleepy.
Interesting. Thanks for sharing your experience
We bring ginger tablets and ginger candy and Bonnie for my husband
Awesome! Thanks for sharing
Thanks for sharing how this has worked for you!!
