Bendik Giske - "Cruising" | Live at Phoenix

Olso-born saxophonist and performing artist Bendik Giske has become renowned for his unorthodox approach to playing his instrument, putting aside the mores of conservatoire jazz in favour of queer theory and contemporary club music production influences. Despite this, his expression is nothing short of virtuosic. Calling forth what sounds like multiple voices from his tenor saxophone through an array of uniquely placed microphones, Giske produces velvety, and at times, abrasive textures, set against the hypnotic tapping of his keys, delicately effected. Meanwhile, in John Wardle’s circular windows, Bendik finds his architectural match, given their rigorous, minimal form. Inspired by the coming together of architecture, instrumental mastery and indisputable style, director Alena Lodkina’s cameras move with poise, taking cues from the desolate geometry of the space to create mesmerising interpolations of distinctive angles. For Live at Phoenix, Bendik Giske performs one of his most recognised compositions: “Cruising”.

Live at Phoenix is a live performance film series by Phoenix Central Park capturing stellar performances by exceptional artists. Running in parallel to Phoenix Central Park’s agenda-setting weekly free concerts, the series gives as much voice to the creatives behind the camera as it does the performers themselves. Each episode is a unique pairing of musician and filmmaker, resulting in an elevated performance inspired by the sculptural surrounds of The Nest. Live at Phoenix has featured Kelly Lee Owens, Liars, Superorganism, Genesis Owusu, EXEK, Jonti, IJALE, e4444e, Aphir, among many others.
