I clicked on this because I wanted to know about Vauxhall at Luton. What I got, was a fine example of why I stopped watching the MSM years ago and it hasn't changed. Misinformation or just plain ignorance of the topic in hand, or could it be what the government want you to believe. Whatever the agenda is, something isn't right on so many levels and all delivered with pomposity and smugness.
EVs *are* better than ICE cars, and even cheaper than ICE cars on the long run. But you have to pay more when you buy the car and less after, so it can be challenging since cars are more and more expansive and with inflation.

Being conservative and taking into battery degradation let's say 500 000 km. How many cars have you own with more with more than 500 000 km done ? And the new batteries found in more and more recent cars (LFP) double the cycles, so many cars will probably reach one million km. Cars are not phones, the battery is protected by a BMS. But sure, all cars are not equals, better buy a brand that have experience with EVs.

Plus production moving to China they can make it far cheaper due to cheaper energy and access to raw materials and investment in manufacturing. I, like millions of people I've in houses with no drive, it's on street parking. Often you don't get to park outside your own property. Like to suggest how my car gets charged. Oh and how people on £25K a year will pay for a 40K car (with no resale value). And I don't know where you live but around me there are plenty of charge points, in my road, close to my work, at the supermarket, etc. And the average distance in Europe if 30 km/day so even if you cannot charge at home or work you just need to go to a public station twice a month. Not to mention less and less people own a car in cities, so many private spots are on sale, and then you can install a charge point. And of course, the elephant in the room : we have no choice since it is not possible to meet net zero in 2050 if people are still buying petrol cars in 2030 or worse 2035. i got given a new renault electric van for work to get to different sites. The van did 130 miles on a full charge and thats without the use of heating etc etc. Safe to say after 2 weeks of not being able to get to work and back everyday on a charge it went straight back!
My EV has a 280 miles range, only cost £19,000 pre reg, and has saved me a fortune in the last 6 months on diesel, if it only lasts 5 years, I will save the value of the car in fuel savings anyhow. It depends on your circumstances, I do about 25k a year and regularly complete long drives with no issues. Having said that, it should be personal choice and not government mandated as it won't work for some.
1) Don't purchase SUV electric cars in the UK 2) Only purchase smaller electric cars 3) Only drive these cars practically within the city 4) Or only consider electric cars if you drive 200 miles or less a week

I have a Tesla Model Y - I have travelled from South Wales to Gatwick easy on a single charge with many miles left, and South Wales to Chester with many miles left. There are chargers everywhere. I have been driving the car 6 months and I cant agree with what they are discussing. it is also siginificatly cheaper to run an electric car, you can charge the car in 25 mins on a tesla supercharger.

car companies need to go back to the desk, look at combustion engines, and work on getting those as close to net zero as poss, and look at developing engines with higher tollerance for ethanol without loosing power and torque, go back to creating stunning looking cars and more practical utility cars.. like the stunning old jags, mgbgts triumphs for the classic sporty looks, beach buggies for the fun cars and mini jeeps like suzukis... and utility vehicles that are usefull and use technology to make them shift between people carrier, jeep, camper, work van .. but with engines.

Still not heard a single person mention the fire hazards EVs cause. Nor the fact we had a multistorey car park fire in Liverpool in 2017, that car park had few if any EVs on it, structurally it was fine after the fire. Fast forward to a couple of years ago, Luton airport multistorey car park had a fire, far more EVs are on the road now so it stands to reason, there was more on the Luton car park. That carpark collapsed. Now. Is that due to more EVs being present and the fact lithium burns at a higher temperature than fossil fuel? Could it be that EVs present a unique structural risk to buildings with under ground car parks and multistorey carparks? Along with the toxicity risk to humans, wildlife, pets, and agricultural land, because lithium turns into hydrofluoric acid when burning. I'm getting really tired of the above never being mentioned. IF the Luton carpark structurally failed, due to EVs, we need to know. Liverpool one shopping centre has a giant carpark underneath it, what happens if lithium fires do cause structural failure, to somewhere like Liverpool one?
We bought electric and we went back to petrol when the cost of energy rocketed. We had problems with the car too. But I am not convinced manufacturing the actual electric car is less polluting than the regular cars. And then what happened to the batteries once they no longer work?

The hybrid was £12,000 more expensive the real mpg for hybrid was just 7mpg better in town, but the same on motorway. I put everything on a spreadsheet, adding the £1,500 home charger For £13,500 I needed to drive 8,000 miles per year for about 25 years to break even with the hybrid, assuming NOTHING ELECTRONICS will break in the hybrid or the charger. Obviously I added the electricity I'd use to charge the batteries over that time (many EV owners are just skipping this step, maybe they are getting their electricity free in one way or another?). And I assumed the electricity prices will NOT get higher at all!!! so I said to myself => hybrid = NEVER, And a full EV: after the hybrid. You know, I did this just because I LOVE my kids, and I want THEM to have my money, not THEIR kids (whoever is trying to sell me an EV or Hybrid).

My home is a middle terrace 1910 house. When my boiler dies I cannot afford to replace it let alone a heat pump. The majority of ordinary people will be without heat. However, I cannot afford to put the heating on anyway.

And of course hydrogen cars need *far more* infrastructures since you cannot fill your tank at home or work while it is easy with a battery electric car. Electric car benefits and cons are all subject to some context of where you live. If you have one with 300 miles of range, I'm sorry but if you're running out of charge, that's on the driver! The only time I ever charge it 'on the road' is journeys between MCR and LDN (I only need to charge it going there or back, not both). For actual data, this year I have spent exactly £520 on charging, for petrol it would be £1,379. And yes, of course if you dont have a charger at home, its not worth the benefits probably for lack of convenience using public chargers. If you do have a charger at home, its very convenient actually.

Here is a chance to take advantage of Brexit, inviting BYD to build factories here for batteries and electric cars. The UK can be a backdoor for them into the EU. We are years behind on EV charge points, Local Councils can't afford to put them in, the Government won't pay, and that's without mentioning the shocking range, battery issues, no resale value, they cost 50% more than their petrol counterparts. A guy up the road bought some electric barge. Two years in there was a problem with the battery and he took it for repair. He was told it was a write off. It cost £80k.

I have a 2012 Vauxhall, diesel. It takes you from the London area to Southampton and back home on max 30 quid. Brilliant little thing! Very cheap to run. In 5 years (got it second hand) it only had a little issue to fix in 2020, never had a problem since. We're sticking to it for as long as it runs.
Also... think about this. 1. your 40k car, would completely change my life if i had 40k!!! what kind of muppet buys a remote control toy car for 40k lol 2. based on this i wouldnt spend 40k on a car, if i had 40k id change my life, not my car. if she gave me 40k id show her how 40k can change one persons life and why thats a total wast of money. 3. if a student gets a degree and masters to get a job.. 40k, then a house 350k would they then want 40k to pay on top of that? then 10k a year for basic bills, 5k basic food a year, prob 15k for a family of 4 basic, its a debt for life plan..

battery normally minimum 8 years at least for minimum 70% retained charge.
Like your phone ,the more you use it and charge it the quicker it degrades, replacement batteries will cost more than what the car is worth .

I have a Tesla Model Y - I have travelled from South Wales to Gatwick easy on a single charge with many miles left, and South Wales to Chester with many miles left. There are chargers everywhere. I have been driving the car 6 months and I cant agree with what they are discussing. it is also siginificatly cheaper to run an electric car, you can charge the car in 25 mins on a tesla supercharger.

car companies need to go back to the desk, look at combustion engines, and work on getting those as close to net zero as poss, and look at developing engines with higher tollerance for ethanol without loosing power and torque, go back to creating stunning looking cars and more practical utility cars.. like the stunning old jags, mgbgts triumphs for the classic sporty looks, beach buggies for the fun cars and mini jeeps like suzukis... and utility vehicles that are usefull and use technology to make them shift between people carrier, jeep, camper, work van .. but with engines.

This is a disaster for the local economy of the Luton area. The government needs to support Vauxhall somehow.
Still not heard a single person mention the fire hazards EVs cause. Nor the fact we had a multistorey car park fire in Liverpool in 2017, that car park had few if any EVs on it, structurally it was fine after the fire. Fast forward to a couple of years ago, Luton airport multistorey car park had a fire, far more EVs are on the road now so it stands to reason, there was more on the Luton car park. That carpark collapsed. Now. Is that due to more EVs being present and the fact lithium burns at a higher temperature than fossil fuel? Could it be that EVs present a unique structural risk to buildings with under ground car parks and multistorey carparks? Along with the toxicity risk to humans, wildlife, pets, and agricultural land, because lithium turns into hydrofluoric acid when burning.
I'm getting really tired of the above never being mentioned. IF the Luton carpark structurally failed, due to EVs, we need to know. Liverpool one shopping centre has a giant carpark underneath it, what happens if lithium fires do cause structural failure, to somewhere like Liverpool one?

We bought electric and we went back to petrol when the cost of energy rocketed. We had problems with the car too. But I am not convinced manufacturing the actual electric car is less polluting than the regular cars. And then what happened to the batteries once they no longer work?

Same manufacturer, same size model, similar mileage and age.
The hybrid was £12,000 more expensive
the real mpg for hybrid was just 7mpg better in town, but the same on motorway.
I put everything on a spreadsheet, adding the £1,500 home charger
For £13,500 I needed to drive 8,000 miles per year for about 25 years to break even with the hybrid, assuming NOTHING ELECTRONICS will break in the hybrid or the charger.
Obviously I added the electricity I'd use to charge the batteries over that time (many EV owners are just skipping this step, maybe they are getting their electricity free in one way or another?).
And I assumed the electricity prices will NOT get higher at all!!!
so I said to myself => hybrid = NEVER,
And a full EV: after the hybrid.
You know, I did this just because I LOVE my kids, and I want THEM to have my money, not THEIR kids (whoever is trying to sell me an EV or Hybrid).

My home is a middle terrace 1910 house. When my boiler dies I cannot afford to replace it let alone a heat pump. The majority of ordinary people will be without heat. However, I cannot afford to put the heating on anyway.

@@skaro4ever Lithium is abundant, and as a metal it can be recycled. Hydrogen is almost non existent as a resource, you must produce it and this process requires *a lot* of energy. And of course hydrogen cars need *far more* infrastructures since you cannot fill your tank at home or work while it is easy with a battery electric car. Electric car benefits and cons are all subject to some context of where you live. If you have one with 300 miles of range, I'm sorry but if you're running out of charge, that's on the driver! The only time I ever charge it 'on the road' is journeys between MCR and LDN (I only need to charge it going there or back, not both). For actual data, this year I have spent exactly £520 on charging, for petrol it would be £1,379.
And yes, of course if you dont have a charger at home, its not worth the benefits probably for lack of convenience using public chargers. If you do have a charger at home, its very convenient actually.

Here is a chance to take advantage of Brexit, inviting BYD to build factories here for batteries and electric cars. The UK can be a backdoor for them into the EU. I have a 2012 Vauxhall, diesel. It takes you from the London area to Southampton and back home on max 30 quid. Brilliant little thing! Very cheap to run. In 5 years (got it second hand) it only had a little issue to fix in 2020, never had a problem since. We're sticking to it for as long as it runs.

Im strongly against net zero targets but im a strong advocate for evs, if it suits your daily driving needs. Same for solar if you do your maths and dont plan to move, its a no brainer
