  • Harriet, Lola and I are taking a walk through the historic market town of Ludlow in Shropshire.
    Ludlow is a market town in Shropshire, England, 28 miles (45 km) south of Shrewsbury and 23 miles (37 km) north of Hereford via the main A49 road, which bypasses the town. With a population of approximately 11,000, Ludlow is the largest town in south Shropshire. The town is significant in the history of the Welsh Marches and neighbouring Wales.

    I have extremely fond memories of Ludlow. As children, our parents would take my brother and I together with our aunt and uncle and their two boys on a Sunday 'day out' to the beautiful town of Ludlow. We would wander around the town peeking in the shops, visit the castle, have Sunday lunch and sometimes go fishing and paddling in the river.
    We would also visit nearby Carding Mill valley [where we would all wear out our shorts sliding down the grassy slopes on our bottoms!] I remember that there used to be a huge oak tree that had been cut down, stripped of its bark and left on a gentle grassy slope - and we would play on this for hours [it became a Lancaster bomber and we were the flight crew!]
    They are some of the best moments I had has a child and we were always so excited when mom and dad would tell us we were going to Ludlow!

      @@RichardVobes ....Thanks so much Richard! I regret to say I hadn't come across your videos before - but I will certainly give them a watch now! I am originally from Worcestershire but sadly left UK almost 30 years ago. I miss it so much and especially the places I spent some of the happiest moments of my childhood. Keep up the great work - sincere thanks for making this 'ex-pat' very happy!

    Great! I spent a short period of time in the Midlands in 2014.
    Shrewsbury, Church Stretton and Ludlow. Thanks for the history lesson. I do remember the market and walking outside of the castle.
    The wood architecture is eye-catching. Also remember many food shops. Thanks.

    Have stayed in Ludlow and also visited several times being a favourite for me. It was the first town I stayed in my first overseas trip back in 2011 and it was for 3 weeks. The castle was the first I had ever seen, so it was magic. Coming back again next Jan from Australia. Love the walks and sights! Nice memories thanks Richard.

    Quite the nicest town in England (well in my humble opinion) I kayaked the Teme for many years in my youth. The whole town is a marvel of olde worlde shops and cafes, the castle is just the right side of falling down. Only downside was the time I took a lorry through with metalwork for the library (right next to the castle) not so much fun! Another super vignette ! Although how you could talk and walk up that hill beats me!

    Ludlow was just magical! I absolutely just love those timberframed buildings? What period are they? Are tbey Saxon - cause they look very Germanic to me anyway.

      @chess2940 4 роки тому

      Lived near Ludlow my whole life. It isn’t rough by any means. The period properties within the town are very pricy and the town itself attracts many people who appreciate local and artisanal shops, and a quiet country lifestyle. There are housing estates which are dotted around the edges of the town as it has naturally expanded, and sure enough like any place, there are some areas which are not so idyllic as the town centre. But overall, it’s a lovely place.

    My wife and I were there at the same time as you, not realising that they were gearing up for a food festival and the castle was closed because of it, which was a bitter disappointment to us as we had journeyed from Chesterfield, Derbyshire. However we walked around the town area and unfortunately we’re disappointed again as we thought the town area (and other towns we have visited too) had lost it’s oldie worldly charm due to a never ending supply of charity shops and estate agents everywhere that had replaced the individual high street shops that we remember from past. Instead of some quaint tea shops that we looked forward to seeing, they had been replaced with your typical chain brand coffee shops. As I said, this is a present day problem in most English towns we have visited which have lost their old English charm for the most part, primarily due to online shopping killing the high street. Such a shame.
