I am Chilean, I lived in Brussels for a year, It happened to me one day that I had to be the interpreter between two Belgians who did not understand each other, one spoke only Duch and english and the other only French, believe it or not
So in what was the common language dor you as a translator? Spanish?
I guess the intermediate translation happened in his head and could be either Spanish or English. If the 2 Belgians had both been able to speak English (or Esperanto) there wouldn't have been a language barrier
@@hannofranz7973 actually I am a cameraman not a translator, on that occasion I translated into english to the guy who spoke flemish -Dutch and in french for the French-walloon speaker. Although the majority of people in Belgium are bilingual, there is a small percentage that are not.
@@Jo-re2ye I speak Spanish, English and French, but I know from my own experience that there is an intermediate time that would be when one understands a language but is not yet able to speak it, due to a problem of shyness or not feeling safe, perhaps that happened between these two Belgians, the one who spoke French did not feel able to speak freely in English and the same was true for the Belgian who spoke Dutch.

Flemish is not a separate language, it is Dutch as spoken in Belgium. It's like American English vs British English.

Although in northern France ‘vlamsch’ is concidered an actual language (basically the West Flemish dialect)

@@ShaCaro France actually supports local languages. Even uses them on the road signs. Flemish is considered a local language in the northern region.
Brussels might be a cool city but it has a lot to answer for due to the sprouts!
Brussels is such an underrated city. I loved my years there, it's one of the most cosmopolitan cities in Europe, you can meet the whole world here. And you didn't even visited the European neighborhood or Matongé, wich have so many languages variety ! Thanks for the video.

Matonge is one of the place you can find a lot of 🇨🇩🇨🇩 ppl and the name matonge comes from Lingala one pf our 4 national lamguages😊. Matonge is the little congo inside belgium😂 if you want experience everything Africam,congolese,culture etc go there😊
As someone from Belgium (French speaking, far from the capital, but still :)), I must say this has been SUPER enjoyable. Some people have a bad image of Brussels for some reasons ... but they are wrong and just watch too much tv / see only the negative sides. I love my country and I love my capital.
Genuine question: What bad image? The worst I've heard about Brussels is that the city can be a little boring, especially since Amsterdam and Paris are no more than two hours away.
That it is basically a dirty city. As a capitol of Belgium ... it is not clean and loads of beggars... sorry but it is what it is. Been there several times and I cannot stay there to long due to how filthy it is.

Interesting. I'm an American who lived in Belgium for 3 yrs, and the language vibe outside of Brussels is very different than the rest of the country.

Lol bleak in the states? Where you from west virginia or something? America is the best country in the world with cultures from all around the world in America. We're richer than Europeans on average, have bigger homes and thankfully the most conservative developed country. God bless America 🇺🇸

This is very humbling.
I come from England and most people only speak one language there. I now speak French as well because I live in France, and I have a bilingual son, but I am unusual in that.
The notion that people from many other countries routinely speak at least one other language fluently is a shock to most English people.
Respect to all those clever and extremely cosmopolitan people!
Honestly, if English hadn't been the "lingua franca", I believe many English speakers would have been at least billingual
Javanese is not a dialect of Bahasa. It's a separate language.

I was going to comment the same thing. As someone who has studied Indonesian, it’s very different from the LANGUAGE of Javanese. A dialect is basically an accent, like comparing Jamaican English to Australian English.

Nice video, well done and I agree with other comments that its refreshing not to have to hear people talking over music. Lived in Belgium 7 yrs and loved going to Brussels. I speak fluently 6 langues English, French, Spanish, Flemish, Italian, Lingala, and passable German, Portuguese, Swahili, Russian and a little Mandarin, Cantonese and Swedish.

That's something I like about Belgium. It's a small country but when you grew up there you can easily speak three languages like French, English, flemish and also Dutch, German. It's a very unique country un Europe even if you have others countries like Luxembourg and Switzerland where they have a good level in languages.
Flemish* is Dutch.
That's what I hate about Belgium, I don't speak French but I try to put some effort in it when in Wallonia but many Brussels people and Walloon don't speak Dutch and don't even care to do an effort in Flanders

From Brussels here, our city may not be the prettiest overall, but I definitely feel it's one of the best atmosphere to live in. Growing up in such a multicultural city makes you much more comfortable and curious about other cultures, because they are the ones of you kindergarten friends rather than something foreign and enigmatic.
I also really like the space here, for a capital city it's definitely not overcrowded, you often see people you know on the streets and it's generally pretty calm in most places, but it definitely doesn't feel empty. Like walking here feels pretty comfortable since the sidewalk is large (unlike in Paris for exemple) and it's not as car reliant as some US cities.
Don't get me wrong, there are still a lot of problems in our city. As I said earlier it's really not the most pretty place in the world, even if some parts are very nice and underrated, it's definitely not a dream post card city. Our transportation network really could be better, the tram and buses are fine but the metro here is a joke, we have essentially two lines numbered 1 to 6 (yes I know) and it doesn't go to most places. It's also not the cleanest or safest city, but I think its bad reputation is very overplayed, if you go nearby I advise you to make your own idea of the city.

I was in Brussels a few months ago. Of all the European cities I've visited, Brussels is the one I felt the most comfortable in. It may not be super touristy but it's somewhere I wouldn't mind calling home.
@@azuresa5356 idk that's what people say. I think some places may not feel safe as they are quite poor, but honestly I've been here for 18 years, never had a single problem.
Brussels locals would feel at home in Melbourne, Australia. Equally multicultural.
The guy with the parents that didn't teach him French because they wanted you to not understand, I feel you bro. My mom never taught me her language. She said it was because we already had 3 languages around the house and a 4th would be too much.. It may have started off like that but I'm sure she was very happy I could not understand what she and her best friend from the same country as her were talking about. Me and my brother always knew when it was about us though because she would use our names and we'd be like "what are you saying about me?" She ALWAYS said "No we are talking about ANOTHER Fuzzy Logics!" 🤥

Haha! My parents did the same with French, untill me and my brother caught up and then they tried it with English, but that didn't work either.

Start now cuz you are never alone buddy… traveling with yourself is the best way to be open to the world and to the self, as paradoxal as it might seems.. the self is the world and since you are a introvert you can’t grasp that idea very quick because usually introvert have a little ego, which is a good thing to me, to be turned to the world and not the little persona one might think he is, the self is the univers or God, universal conscience having a human experience and not the other way around. The me doesn’t exist because all is one and one is all. You also can travel without moving, the level of conscience shifts for sure so it’s not always necessary but it’s a nice experience to make though, to travel a little and confront with the unknown and the world itself through people. We all are the humain conscience so again the level of conscience while traveling is more importante that traveling itself, since you can travel in the invisible world and without even moving from your current place…

Been to Belgium twice. Visited Gent, Brügge and Bruxelles. Cool, artsy country, and easy to get around by train, unlike my own country. Melting pot of cultures and lovely architecture. Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪

I'm from Brussels, grew up in Flanders and learned Dutch (native), French (8 years), English (6 years), German (3 years) and Spanish (2 years) in high school. By the time I was in my final year, I had ALL these languages at the same time (add Latin too, but of course it's not spoken). I'm no exception. Everyone in my class did it :)
I went on to become a fluent German speaker, I learned Italian, didn't further develop my Spanish (it's now my weakest language), and during lockdown I added Irish to the list. Latin came in SO useful for learning all these languages, especially when it came to Irish grammar. I feel very lucky to have had my high school education in a Flemish school.

I'm neither from Brussels nor from EU, but I just can't help commenting. Latin is absolutely the most useful language I've ever learned. It helped me so much and in so many ways. People usually don't get it, but those who studied it - those people know immediately what you mean.

I learned Dutch (native), French, English and German at school and added Swedish later on in my life. And now learning Italian.
I lived in Bru 5 years and I really miss it, as on of the persons from the video said: you feel very comfortable in this city, very free and secure.
Dutch and Flemish are literally the same, it's like UK and American English. There's just some minor differences in vocabulary.

Nice to see a video on Brussels, as a student in Brussels I can definitely say that Brussels is a great multicultural city! And as a native Dutch speaker (I'm bilingual), 'Flemish' is the national variant of Dutch in Belgium. It is also a dialect cluster, which means that in itself, Flanders has a lot of drastically different-sounding regional dialects as well (This is what the guy was referring to 7:51.).
So basically, the official denomination of the language in the Flemish region (and Brussels) is still Dutch. Flemish is not recognized as a language, but rather it's seen as a cluster of dialects and culture.

Living for 2 years in Brussels, wonderful city from a language perspective. I knew someone who is fluent in 7 languages, and they haven't studied foreign languages in school, just moving form place to place throughout the years.
For me the best feeling is to speak my mother language in a restaurant and although it is a latin based language, very few people can identify it.
Feels like you're talking about Romanian/Moldovan. Though I secretly hope that it's either Rhaetian or Papiamento.
Loved this video as someone from Brussels 🐢!! I just want to say that Flemish really is just the name that is used to refer to Dutch as spoken in Flanders. The difference between Dutch in Belgium and Dutch in the Netherlands mainly lies in pronunciation and some vocabulary. It's much like the difference between American English and British English, where there are standard pronunciations that everybody understands and then there are some extraordinary dialects that are hard to understand for most people. Also, since I am Dutch speaking from Brussels, I would never in a million years say I speak Flemish, since Brussels does not belong to Flanders despite being located in it. I love Flanders, but I am not Flemish and neither is my language - French speakers from BXL often get this wrong 😁
Flemish is also used to refer to the Flemish dialects which are not Dutch.

Flemish isn't even really a thing unless you'd be refering to a sort of accent people in West- and east- Flanders have. People in Limburg have a very different dialect from people in West-Flanders. People from Zeeuws Vlaanderen in the Netherlands sound more "Flemish" then people from Antwerp sometimes.
Flanders as it exists today as a political entity is not a linguistic designation. The administrative region has by-and-large 3 dialect groups. You could maybe make the argument that "VRT Vlaams" has made it a linguistically uniform region when compared to the Netherlands, but I'd say that's more Brabantian encroaching on the other dialects through state media.
Brussels is a wonderful city! The people are lovely, and do speak a lot of languages! I wish I knew more languages, just my first language and some of another. I work with refugees- and their language skills amaze me every day! They often speak about 3+ languages.

i love growing up in brussels beacause of how diverse it is. You easili pick up languages. My native language is dutch, i learned english through television, i learned french by just going places like the grocery store here, ive picked up a bit of arabic and polisch by going to school here and we learn german in school. Im only 15 so i hope ill learn lots more

Brussel is very much like Montreal, the same challenges. I really liked the vibe. I remember sitting in a bar, a group of local was speaking french loudly very next. The lady went to the toilet and back from it, she switched without notice in flemish. I found that very cool. Initially Brussel was a dutch speaking territory but a lot of francophones moved and the balance change. Now it's a mix. If you have to settle there, make sure to have the basic in both languages if you don't miss opportunities. I still found incredible some people don't make a single effort in other languages. I know people who when through war and misery but still found the way to learn foreign languages.

The native Dutch speakers also switched to French during the last two centuries
Actually, Brussels became Francophone when the Dutch-speakers switched to French. I'm pretty sure that there are more Dutch (Germanic) surnames than French (Gallic) surnames.
And to be honest, almost all the French-speaking Belgians I know have Dutch surnames.

I feel super comfortable with no pressure whenever I write in English because is already my second language and my first linguistic love as well. My third language will be French, the fourth will be German and so on. Take care.

Brussels is a very nice place, I did this winter there so being someone who speak multiple languages I was living there happily because in Belgium at least anyone you see might either speak two or three languages and it’s so beautiful and the people are so friendly 😅

Well, you can say what you want about Brussels but the truth is, it's extremely rare to meet someone who only speaks one language.
Brussels is so underrated, it’s so rare to have so many people speaking so many languages in one place. And people can feel bad for not speaking more 😅

I love these videos. I’m originally from Philadelphia with a native language of English. I speak French to an extent but I read it much better, I also know a little bit of Spanish just from living around it. I’m nearly fluent in German from living here for university and I speak a tiny bit of Japanese. These videos remind me how vast the world is, I’ve had so many situations where finding a common language with someone was an art form. Cannot wait to visit Brussels!
It is so polite of you that you only ask them to say sth in their native language bc however fluent one speaks a foreign language, it doesn't mean he is fresh to speak immediately. Also it is so polite and warm towards people that when they say they only speak one language, you ask them which one they would like to learn. Learning a foreign language is a privilege not all people had in their lives. 🐢
Love the way the language can unite people from different cultures and generations. Learning from each other

As an English native, I’m very jealous of all these people who can speak multiple languages. It’s really annoying that language learning is not taken very seriously here in our educational system 😭
Why are you expecting the education system to help you? It's only there for the first 11 years of your life. What excuse do you have for not educating yourself? Stop whinging and sign up for a language course. I learnt English at 32.

I'm American and I speak 3 languages English , Spanish and Tutnese. I can also speak a little French, but just enough to survive. It's not difficult, but you do need patience.
I'm from Canada the french part, learned english at school but couldn't be bothered to learn any more languages because I was lazy and didn't more work at school. Today I speak 5 languages and looking forward to learn a new one eventually. All learned online, it's feasible and never too late if you have enough motivation.
I just moved to Brussels, this was so lovely to see! I speak English, Irish, and French, but no Dutch unfortunately - also working on Italian and Danish atm. completely agree that Brussels is a fun place for someone interested in languages :)

10:40. No. I diagree, it's never too late. Don't give up. There are stories of people who've picked up languages late. I think there's even an elderly woman on UA-cam who started learning Russian just to read literature because she wanted too. Matter of perspective / time / energy.
I'm a native Dutch speaker (I speak English, Dutch, German, French and...). I studied French at university. Always thought speaking other latin languages would be nice, but never found a good reason for actually doing it.
At 50 years of age (7 years ago), I met the big love of my life, who is from Spain. I have been learning Spanish ever since and speak it reasonably well now.

That's true, it's never too late.
I quite agree with him. I've always studied languages easily but I started Chinese when I was around 50 and I did notice that progress was much slower. Doesn't mean it is impossible and you shouldn't even try, but it is true that your brain struggles more after 50, definitely with very different languages. Learning Spanish when you already learned French is not the same challenge as learning Chinese (for a European). That's what he said: "for languages such as Chinese or Arabic, start younger!"

I once saw a customer arguing with a shop attendant because he refused to speak Dutch. She absolutely lost it, called the cops, people tried to calm her down and she was screaming "don't come near me!" The guy from the store was shouting "you're in Brussels, I can speak French if i want!"

I’m from Belgium, I speak English, French, Arabic, Dutch and a little bit of Korean. I learned English and Dutch only by watching movies and listening to music :) you can easily find polyglots in Belgium, it was a nice video :)

So to answer your question about Flemish (Vlaams) and Dutch (Nederlands) more in depth... You can compare it to British English and American English. Some may say I speak English, others might say I speak American. Kids in The Netherlands and Flanders both learn 'official Dutch' in school. In essence it's the same language, but there are some differences in vocab and grammar. The accent is really the main difference.

@@korruptnovellst4751maar dat verschilt ook weer totaal van regio tot regio. Ik ben van Oos-Vlaanderen in België, meer specifiek van Gent. Als ik mensen van Brugge, Antwerpen, Brussel of Limburg tegen kom versta ik hun ook niet altijd even goed. Brusselaars spreken nogal met een Frans toontje , en limburgers prate bv heel traag.

This is why I fell in love with Brussels when I moved here, and it still fascinates me 18 years later. People mix languages all the time and hold language in high esteem in everyday life. It's a great daily reminder of how wonderful people are.

Well i studied English at school ..... I also studied France for two years . so 6 language if that counts . I loved your video i wish I could joy you I love learning languages .
