    I know it's already been said but he won a damn Grammy for this song. My interpretation of "we're going to go where everybody knows everybody." is we're all going inside because of the pandemic, and everyone knows everyone on the internet. Also "all eyes on me" to me means people looking for followers or likes or whatever. It's a pretty deep song and I like it but if any song deserved a Grammy it was his Kanye rant. By 8:30 ish, you really got it. What you said about the internal conversation of anxiety is 100% right. And, frankly, if I had to guess - I think the intro verse that he reprises (Are you feeling nerrrvous? Are you having fun?…) is what he says or used to say to himself before performing live if he was feeling panic.

    • @ThatsMyStuffYouBledOnTrevor
      @ThatsMyStuffYouBledOnTrevor Рік тому +1

      That’s why I think ultimately this song is just basically his love letter to performing live. Between the canned crowd noise (he’s alone in his room), the part about the “whole world ending” - it’s meant to be existential, but it’s also just him being honest about how devastating that whole lockdown timing experience was for him. “Got it? Good, now get inside.”

  • @sam1yoo0ell0
    @sam1yoo0ell0 Рік тому +5

    Love your reactions! Few quick facts that are probably in the comments already:
    1) This is part of his special "Inside" - Filmed alone in his room. The audience sounds are added in by him and show a) How the audience always yearns for a "funny story" from him. b) They enjoy and revel when he talks about his mental health and panic attacks. These are both big topics for him and I think this demonstrates how vulnerable and aware of this vulnerability he feels in his performance niche.
    2) He won a grammy for this song. It's an incredible song and you spoke about that fact brilliantly.
    3) This is like a sequel to his Kanye Rant song "Can't Handle This" - It is dealing with his anxiety when performing and yet he has a strong desire to perform and entertain, which through his intense self-awareness he often points out may have roots in his desire for attention and adoration from others. These two opposing factors of anxiety/self-awareness vs willingness to perform/desire for attention or affection are always in interplay in his material and it's wonderful to see someone so talented acknowledge this.
    4) Being from inside, this song also obviously deals with the pandemic and the matters around at the time. Social media, global warming, civil rights etc. There are many interpretations to this song and all of them have credence.

  • @infinitecorpze
    @infinitecorpze Рік тому +5

    You're totally right about the anxieties messaging throughout, but specifically for "Are you feeling nervous? Are you having fun? It's almost over. It's just begun" there probably is some other meaning to it as well, but it reads to me as being very much about the pandemic (as this whole special was). It's great cuz on the first pass, you kinda don't see it, but when it's repeated after his monologue, you have the context of the pandemic in your head and suddenly you see that version of it

    • @MeganTheLibrarian3
      @MeganTheLibrarian3 Рік тому

      I think you're right and I love how, like Britt said, this song can mean different things to different people. To me it's about having conflicting emotions at the same time. It's Bo the guy who loves attention and performing (i.e. Art is Dead) trying to convince Bo the guy who was having panic attacks due to performing (i.e. the Kanye Rant) that it's time for them to get back out there. It's the constant internal struggle between wanting to get back to performing and being terrified that if he does, the panic attacks will come back. I guess the pandemic sort of solved that dilemma for him and Inside probably ended up being the best case scenario where he could return to comedy, without the pressure of live performance. ...at least that's my way-more-than-two-cents. 😂

    I think an important line that's repeated throughout the song that all the reactors I've seen missed is, "We're going to go where everybody knows everybody...". You were very critized in your first few videos only because he was new to you and it takes a minute to see the message between the lines in his songs. I really think your message at the end of the video to those people who said your opinion didn’t matter essentially was powerful and well articulated and it’s 100% accurate, everything you have perceived in life is unique so you relate to songs with your experience! Love the videos and glad you enjoy him as much as I do

  • @mossicely

    Great reaction, respect how you caught the theme and details so quickly. I think your point about everyone having different experiences is so important. For instance, years ago when I was finishing up high school I now believe I had depression, although I didn't realize it at the time. I was basically super numb to everything around me, constantly disassociating, and no longer had any cares about the quality of my life or future. But I was always the person who supported others around me, and multiple people who talked to me about their depression were all deeply suicidal. Well I couldn't have depression then, because I'm not suicidal and I'm not going to pretend to know everything this person is going through. That's just how my teenage brain processed. The reality is that there's nothing we know for sure, what we know is what we experience or can test repeatedly, but everything else surrounding that where we assign values or cause and effect is all conjecture.

    This is my favorite Bo song right now. I can and have written basically an essay on why it's so great. I think my favorite part though is that it has relatively few lyrics but still has a lot of depth emotionally and in meaning, and so much of that depth is coming from context and subtext--the things he's not saying.

  • @Femtastico
    @Femtastico Рік тому +3

    Loved this reaction!! Thank you for knowing he meant the pandemic lol, it often goes right past reactors. That said, I do agree w you that Bo's work is very much up to interpretation, he doesn't work with double, triple etc meanings for nothing haha. In my interpretation this song is about the extreme irony that Bo, having a love hate relationship with 'the audience', now he was finally ready to face them again, can't and is stuck in his room. So he talks to the camera instead, getting more and more frustrated as it doesn't say anything or responds at all. That's why he yells "get the f up!!" It's the camera that is an insufficient substitute for true audience feedback .

    Girl, you did 1,000 times better with this one than I did. Maybe I'm just dumb, but it took me 6 months of thinking about this song non-stop before I figured out exactly what I thought he was trying to express with it. Us Bo nerds do LOVE to tell people exactly what we think his work means, but just like you said, in the end it's all our subjective opinion filtered through our own experiences.
    The choice to deepen his voice and add the crowd sound effects was interesting. And there are so many interesting things happening with the cinematography in this one too, from the blue lighting to the projector live streaming the image behind him, to using his hand to manipulate the lighting, to the choice to physically pick up the camera at the end. (Since he's making it himself without a camera crew, it's the only time the camera physically moves during the special, which makes it a really impactful moment visually, I think).
    Anyways, don't worry about"getting" everything the first time, and don't be afraid of people in the comments, I think we secretly love when people "miss" stuff so we can share what we think about it! 😂

    I also took this as a personal conflict/conversation. He's talking to himself, reassuring himself to "re-enter" to the world. Great observation. Also, I love the production, too - I actually still have this on my playlist. It's a great song.
    May I also add that I appreciate how nicely you clap back to those who judge your takes on Bo. For example, I've seen people interpret this song at least five or six different ways, and they all seem to apply: the pandemic, depression, climate change, social anxiety, social media pressure.. they can all be separately true, or apply at the same time. You're right on that. I can see you got a little hurt by the comments (especially the Kanye rant comments). Don't take them too seriously, though. We all love Bo & feel he is the voice of our generation, so we can be a little protective about him, but gatekeeping is never an attractive feature.

    one more thing i caught from another reactor is that this song may connect to "welcome to the internet" through the lines "got it? good! now get inside; we're going to go where everibody knows everibody" where 'inside' is a referance to the whole special for one but also to say "you don't have the outside anymore, now go online where all your information (and everibody elses,) is layed bare, a topic he touches on on the other song too, and also troughout the special there are moments where he makes very poiniant remarks about the online culture. all-in-all very deep on its oun, but also very connected to the rest of this one-of-a-kind special

    God-damned right. That's one of the many reasons he's so good. I see the painting from whatever I angle I feel in that moment. There's no right answer. Even if the artist says it means something specific it still can mean something else to me. Americans always treat like a pageant or some kinda contest. Having said that I'm from Indiana and still live here.

    love your reactions Britt. People get so defensive about some of these songs because they are so deeply personal, especially these that dropped during the peak panini when everyone felt so deeply isolated (okay not everyone, but mostly everyone who connected with this special). but that's a them thing and I know you know that lol. art is obviously for interpretation. like even though bo said he didn't mean for the burrito in Can't Handle This to be symbolic, it kind of is anyways, because that's how it fits and is interpreted widely by people. it's layers folks, we're all looking at it from a different path and perspective. keep on keeping girl. 💜💜💜

    I read a comment from someone who pointed out that through this entire special the camera never moves during a scene, except in this song. It zooms in or out and he occasionally captures things from more than one angle, but the camera is never actually moving. So I think when he picks it up in this song and basically spins around with it, he is forcing you into upheaval and to experience some of the chaos that can come with bad mental health. For a second we are not just spectators; maybe we are inside of Bo's mind.

    As Neil Gaiman said in his introduction to Fahrenheit 451, "If somebody tells you what a book is about, they're probably right. If somebody tells you that's ALL the book is about, they're most definitely wrong." I believe the sentiment holds true for any piece of art and this song can mean a multitude of different things to different people. People on here commenting aren't any more or less correct in their interpretation than you are in yours.

    Gotta say, as an Australian it can be hard to relate to Americans sometimes. What I appreciate though is at the start of the video you took a moment to gather your thoughts, think about what you wanted to say, and then delivered it well. I've watched a few of your videos and enjoyed them but that pause to gather your thoughts made me subscribe.

    Like you're totally spot on about how this could be a hit, I think he could be a mainstream artist if he wanted to be. But his songs are so much deeper than anything mainstream and I think he knows that and I think that's why he makes the songs he does and the performances he does. He doesn't just want to make pop hits, which I think is awesome.

    I'm always hit by the "were not going to slow it, heaven knows we tried..."
    Right near the beginning, when people realized just how bad things were going, everyone was saying "let's do this to slow the spread." Bo's right in that, all our attempts to slow it did little to nothing, it all blew up.

      Double meaning there too as it follows "You think the ocean's rising, like I give a shit. You think the whole world's ending, honey it already did."
      In addition to the obvious Covid connotations that color the entire special, it also speaks on a larger level about the widespread defeated apathy regarding climate change.

The audience laugh track was added by Bo to be ironical, laughing at inappropriate times in his commentary. You're a beautiful human, thanks for the reaction.

    Mania. That's what I feel the song is about, even how it ends with the maniacal laughter at the end. The giving into the madness and the sadness? Maybe? It's an amazing song and I dont think there are any wrong answers. It 100% is about how the song makes you feel which I feel like was his intention. Hes an artist through and through hes transcended the medium of comedy imo.

    A moment of silence for all those lost to the panorama.
    Okay, seriously though, I love seeing other people watch Bo Burnham's stuff. I had the same thought about the vocal distortion being a way to mask how you really sound out of some sense of insecurity, but now I think it was just an artistic choice for the song. If he modified his vocals for every song I'd agree, but he does it pretty sparingly. There are plenty of other songs where he doesn't use any vocal effects.
    Although I don't think you're wrong that he has a lot of insecurity and self doubt. He seems extremely critical of himself. In one song he claims he can't sing or play guitar well, then proceeds to do both of those things beautifully lol.

    If you watch the special this is from, Bo uses a lot of crowd effects though out. Applause, laughter, that kind of stuff. I am not sure what his intention really was, but the way I took it while watching was it was punctuate the the fact that he was alone and feeling disconnected from the world. He started making this just as the lockdowns were happening and it came out a little more then a year into all of it I think and it was very cathartic to see someone else having the same sort of troubles adjusting to what life was like during all of it. Oh and ignore people who want to tell you that you are interpreting things incorrectly. The expression "Art is in the eye of the beholder" exists for a reason, any form of art gets its being from the person experiencing it and that is no less important the intention of the person who made it. Some people are too worried about others being correct rather then discussion the way different people can experience and interpret the same piece.
