Fun Fact: Tottenham used to play in Gold and Brown stripes, but in the 1898-99 season they changed their kit to white and navy to be like Preston North End who has just done the double. Both teams share the nickname ‘The Lilywhites’
More a case of reverting to type, I think, rather than paying homage to Preston. Very early team photos (c1884) show them wearing white shirts. This would have been some years before Preston won the double. And their goalposts were painted in blue and white as well at that time, so those colours have been associated with the club virtually from the beginning. You're dead right, though, about the chocolate and gold strip. Hard to say what prompted it, but there were some pretty loud colour schemes around in the Southern League of those days (they didn't get into the Football League till 1908). Maybe Spurs just wanted to be as unique as all the rest. (Source for the above: "Spurs: A History Of Tottenham Hotspur FC" by Julian Holland, pub. c1955.)

Defenitly @Daniel Hackett First English team to do the double also The Original 'Invincibles' team unbeaten in a season. Tom Finney 12 years at PNE, 76 caps for England and classed as one of footballs greats.
Honestly surprised that Bury weren't even an honourable mention, spent most of their early history in the First Division as well twice being FA Cup winners (more than the likes of Leeds United, Southampton and Ipswich Town and the same number as clubs like Preston North End, Nottingham Forest and Sunderland). They've also had famous players like Terry McDermott, Colin Bell, Neville Southall, and 1966 World Cup winning winger John Connelly all play for the Lancashire club.
Well to be completely honest that tit that slapped a Grimsby town player puts you out of the list by a fine margin because there is no place for football for that kind of shenanigans
Brit _Plays123 is this the same grimsby town as the one whose fans trashed burton after winning and caused a fair ammount of damage??? Theres no place for shenanigans like that
My list: Honourable Mentions: Brentford Rotherham United Carlisle United Port Vale Doncaster Rovers Peterborough United Southend United Oxford United Tranmere Rovers Bristol Rovers 7. MK Dons 6. Millwall 5. Notts County 4. Plymouth Argyle 3. Luton Town 2. Preston North End 1. Bristol City This as a Bristol Rovers fan, noting average attendances for their league and position for the last several seasons, attendances at big-game matches, potential fanbase, current stadium, and potential if in a new stadium. Bristol City (my least favourite team) clearly have the highest attendances of all clubs that haven't played in the PL, and are the bigger of the two Bristol teams by a distance. PNE have history on their side, and play in a nice stadium and could easily get promoted if somebody with some decent money ran them. Luton, Bristol Rovers and Southend could all be a big clubs if in new stadiums. All the clubs in my 7 plus all the honourable mentions are far far bigger than Fleetwood Town!
Bristol being a far bigger city than Preston and doesn't have to put up with 4 of England's biggest clubs being just down the road. Preston have also spent far less money in recent times yet still knocked on the premier league door more often. You're kidding yourself if you genuinely believe Bristol are a bigger club.
Luton Town and Notts County were in the top flight (the old Division One) in 1991-92, but they were two of the three teams relegated at the end of that season so they missed out on being in the Premier League. Maybe they will one day get promotion to the PL.
Brentford, Millwall, Preston North End, Bristol City, and Luton Town could realistically make the Premier League for the first time within the next 3 seasons. I would add Rotherham to the mix as the 6th team if any, but they are far too stagnant, constantly yoyo-ing between the Championship and League One. In a way this is a good thing, as the club are clearly only spending within their means and just rely on luck with the players they have. There is no point ripping the assets out of a club just to reach the Premier League when we have seen what the consequences can be. Therefore, apart from the 5 teams I mentioned, I can't see any new teams making the Premier League anytime soon.
This video could do with an update, Millwall and Preston knocking on the door now. Bristol city would be another potential one. Another club with untapped potential would be Plymouth Argyle. Huge catchment area in Devon and Cornwall. However football isn’t as popular in the South West.
As well as 4 major trophies won, Preston where also top flight runners up 6 times( losing to the Gunners by 1 goal on goal difference in 1957) and Fa Cup runners up 6 times(the last losing to West Ham in 1964).
Where is Oxford United????!!!! we have history we have even won a league cup when it was called the milk cup and where relegated from the division 1 the season before it become the prem
Throughout the video, I was thinking Wrexham. And they're certainly historically bigger than the majority of those in the the honourable mentions. At their height, their fan base covered the whole of North Wales as they were the only professional club in the area. I remember going to see them in a game against Sunderland in the early 80s/late 70s. The Racecourse was packed. They also provided many of Wales' international players at the time. Sad to see how they've imploded since.
Yes, Luton Town, having been from second division to fifth and now back to 3rd division in 10 to 12 year time period. A stadium built in 1905, and have been trying to get a new one since the 1950s with three or four proposed relocations to bigger new stadiums having fallen through.
Oxford United definitely a major omission worthy of honourable mention at least: Two seasons in the top flight in the 80s, League Cup winners, based in a city with a population of 155,000. They must surely rank above a club who've only been in the league five years and never even been in the second tier!
How have you completely ignored Lincoln? We spent something like 60 years in the 2nd tier, we're getting great attendances at the moment and we've historically generally had decent ones. Not saying we should be ranked in the 7 but the fact that you said teams like Yeovil, Fleetwood and MK are big clubs and not us is baffling
First 2 are premier league teams. 4 years has flown by. Also Notts are back in league 2 having been promoted from the national league as runners up to wrexham and play off champions.
Preston North End are undoubtedly the biggest club never to have played in the Premier League. This despite the fact they were one of the original founders of the Football League back in the 1880's - and they were the first English club to win the league title in successive seasons (1888/89 and 1889/90).

@Rob Faz The fanbase is traditionally mostly drawn from areas in Salford. The training ground used to be there, and locals would go and watch, meet the players. It doesn't really matter, boundaries are arbitrarily drawn up to suit political needs. So it doesn't mean much. But if there is such a thing as "Salford's club", it's Man U.
As a Stoke City supporter,I know it's hard work having a team that achieves little the way of success. So many great old clubs, but we all need to stay with them. Good Luck to all the club's, even Millwall! ⚽️🎟
Agree with that list but mentions for Port Vale, Fleetwood & Orient? You may as well mention Walsall who have played in the 2nd tier in the 1960's 70's 80's and 2000's and Gillingham are worth a mention too the only club in Kent an took 40,000 to Wembley a few years ago.
