On the subject of the X mid, I personally pitch mine tight to prevent flapping (I recall you mentioning someone had advised you to pitch it slack) it's possible that your pole tip slipped out of the grommet because the pole wasn't extended tight enough. Getting a good rectangular pitch and making sure the poles are fully extended as far as they go is key, also, tighten the corner peg out cords BEFORE fitting your poles. Using a full footprint helps get a rectangular pitch first time, every time. I've got a video on a footprint I bought for £15 off eBay that works a treat for an x mid 2 solid/2 pro plus.
On the occasion it was really tight as that's what I always did but some said it was too tight forcing the pole through. If you go to my shorts page the one titled last day on the Cape wrath trail the clip of the xmid is second's before the pole went through. I think some people do and some don't, just unfortunate that my pole went through. 😬 But I'm confident I've sorted it 🤞
Is your X mid an earlier version? Because the newer versions have an extra layer of webbing above the pole grommet to prevent the tip damaging the flysheet. My X mid has the extra webbing strip which might explain why I've never had that problem.
@trooperwolfie yes it was the first version before they reinforced the cup. They replaced it FOC so I'm more than happy. 🙂 I used the old one for the demo. I have the solid but it is also the old version that hasn't got the reinforced peak.
@greyhikes5236 that definitely explains it 👍🏻 I've also found that different brands/models of walking poles have different dimensions of pole tip, some are a snug fit and don't protrude much past the grommet, and others are narrower and the tungsten tip protrudes further through the grommet which doesn't help matters. It's good to all share ideas and experiences with each other so we can all work out the best solution for each of us 👍🏻
Evening Al, another storm successfully chased! 🤣 Cracking little bit of kit mate, with those sleeves. Just remember when you’ve made your millions don’t forget who were your earliest subscribers! 🤣🤣 Hope you’ve had a good weekend, all the best, Dave 😀🥾⛰🏕️💨⛈️
Dave honestly I didn't know it was coming 😂 becoming an occupational hazard 😬 I'm working on a new version this week so that when China copy it it won't reflect bad on me 🤣
Walking poles definitely massively improve the stability of the elixir, as i think i may have mentioned, i use slotted pole mushrooms that thread onto the cross pole webbing straps and ive added elastic loops to the footprint to hold the pole handles in place. Your universal pole sleeves are a good idea, i recon they would sell well, get them patented 😉
@@trooperwolfie it will be good to see how they perform when the next storm hits the UK. Yeh it costs thousands to patent something in the UK. Now that they have been through a storm I have a few things to add to version 4.0
Fantastic video, the "Hiking Pole tent condoms" 😂 look superb. I would love to try a set out on my Yun Chuan 2. Please enter me into your draw. Again, excellent video. Cheers, Gary
Great follow-up to your last video! I'd never thought of putting snow baskets on my poles before pitching my tent, might have to give that a spin. I'd also like to stick my name in the hat for some of your pole sleeve thingamajigs! I'd be more than happy to give em a spin and fire you some feedback! Keep on keeping on!
I'll put you in the free draw Paul👍. I'm hoping to get feedback from the free ones I'm giving away so it's tested. I'm going to see what the demand is and any improvements I need to make. Marketing and patent cost way more than it's worth tbh. Looking at version 4 just waiting on parts from eBay 😂
Another really good and thought provoking video Al. I am a bit late to the naming party but the sock/glove reminds me of a condom. The fact you were using your Yun Chan requires the naming as 'Yondoms'. Apologies for the late comment. I've been on my travels again. Almost at 1000 now. You will soon be there mate. John.
Cheers John, yeh it's been a slog but fingers crossed will get to the 1k by the end of the year. 🤞 I'm on version 4 of the pole things I still haven't got a name for them but I will consider your well thought out suggestion 😂
I’m sure Paul Messner grafted in some Z-Pack trekking pole cups in his X-Mid back in the day. Tried to put I link in here but my reply disappeared last time.

What a great idea the sleeve is, don't know if they've all gone to good homes Al, but I'd love to try a pair, for when my tent arrives 😀 👍
I've just notified the 5 winners which were the only 5 who entered. I'll see if I can knock another set up just for you pal 😉
@greyhikes5236 oh wow !! but really don't put yourself or Sandie out, only if you can fit us in 👍👌
@Mickoutdoors no problems Mick, I need the practice 😂
@greyhikes5236 thanks so much Al, really appreciate that 😊 👍👌
Great video mate. Was lovely to meet you in Sandbanks today. Have a great camp 🏕️
And you! Have a safe journey! Will get onto tiktok and find you 👍

I really like the "PoleGrip" mod. Might you produce them in the future?? 👍 Again, a very well produced and informative film.

Interesting video! It’s always good to see someone camping locally 😀
Please put me into the draw for a pair of your pole Doobries
Will do 'Doobries' I like it 🤣

Yeh I know the ones from America. There are plastic looking umbrellas some sites in the UK, think there 3d printed. Yeh UA-cam doesn't allow links. 👍
