I remember seeing this video 8 years ago, and today, I found myself in possession of some Go-Stop cards and came back to actually learn how to play. This feels very full-circle.
This video made me so happy! as I uh...brush my homework off to the side...it's due in an hour..whatevs.... But I've always wanted to learn this card game and I saw the video upload so I just HAD to watch!
Thank you for posting this. I've seen this in sooooo many dramas and when I looked up the directions online I found it too confusing. I still don't really understand it but I have a clearer idea than before.
OMFG thank you for this. being korean american, my family literally has 5 packs of these cards and I am always scratching my head whenever I see them. thanks to you guys I get the gist of how to play! yay!
You absolutely don't have to gamble, you can just play for points just like any other game! People would gamble based on the GO and STOP point, so if they choose to STOP with low points, it's like a safe way to win, but most people would GO to try and gather more points but then they risk the chance of someone else winning and saying STOP.
OMG WE SAW THOSE when we were looking up this game. That set is SO FREAKING AWESOME! I'd learn this game inside out if it meant I could play with those cards!
*jaw drops* I've played that game online before...sort of. There's a very similar mini-game in Billy vs Snakeman with almost identical cards and similar rules.
i like soo zee's nails =] i grew up watching my parents and their friends play this all the time at get-togethers but it is still the most confusing game in the world. and they always played it by smacking the cards down, like literally SMACK. im surprised u guys didn't do it here, i thought it was a tradition lol
SOOZEE!! hahaha when I was little, I found a stack of go stop cards so i brought them out and started playing with them (not knowing what it actually was) and my parents face when so red when they saw me...
You guys should also try playing using missions. The most common missions combo is the ino-shika-cho (boar-deer-butterfly). It's the main animal combo in Koi Koi (the Japanese version of Go Stop). The winner multiplies his or her win by 4 if they have it.
My grandma called them hanafuda cards. We played it similarly but we didn't call it go stop and the points system was different with a few different rules. Maybe it's different because she's from Hawaii.
the cards are called hanafuda cards (flower cards), but you can play different games with them. You grandma probably taught you hawaiian koi koi which is a variant.
I love playing with Hanafuda cards! But I only know how to play the Japanese version of the game called Koi-Koi, which is pretty similar, but I think its funner. Mostly because you get to yell out "koi-koi" which more or less means "BRING IT ON!". XD
I remembered I had a dream where Soo Zee shows the first round ( 3:20 ) few days ago. And I also remembered she says " I'm aiming for the birdies~ " in my dream. OMG !!!
One thing that I would like to point out is that at the end when Martina didn't have an quang and received a penalty because of it, it ONLY applies if Sugee score at least one point from collecting quangs. Same thing applies to lacking pi (at least 6). Sugee had to scored at least one point from collecting pi.
arent these hanafuda? wich literally means flower cards in japanese (flowers painted on cards and stuff, you know :D) i own a deck and was taught these are japanese cards (in japan the game is called koi-koi btw )
The best way to play this game is to play it on a blanket. When you match the two cards you're supposed to slap the cards together. The slapping sounds is where the fun is at in this game. In Korean there's this expression 쫘~악 하고 달라 붙는다.
Well at the bare bones of the game, it is a lot like rummy. You match sets, you draw from the pile and see if it matches anything. Taking other people's points is kind of like building off of other's cards. You can also strategically block other people. I don't know, it makes sense to me, its just that these cards have a lot more ways they can be grouped together.
the easiest way to learn is by playing it. that's how i learnt. and there's poktan, 'bomb' which is when you have all three other cards of the family. u go "POKTAN!" and throw em down when the matching card appears. u also get one card from the other players. and every go counts as one point
Thanks for the video too! At least there is a rough idea on how to play that famous signature Go Stop game in Korea. Maybe there should be a game segment for the bonus page. :p
Oh man... One of my great aunts taught me how to play when I visited Korea when I was 7 or 6. I didn't really understand it though. The only concept I got was to match the cards. Then my grandma got mad at her because kids weren't supposed to play it since it was a gambling game.
I learned to play back in 1977 while i was station at Camp Humphreys, Korea, but it was go stop. They are playing a little different than i recalled. I just ordered 3 sets from Amazon. There are about 4 guys here that were station in Korea with me im going to surprise they with these cards.
When I first saw this game being play a group of women were playing and I ask what are you playing first they said this is what the women play but they were having so much fun I ask them to teach me. After 3 years when I return to America I taught a lot of people to play but that was in 1981 I don't know what happened to the cards probably everyone forgotten how to play.
Omg, I haven't played this in years, used to play it a lot with my family when I was younger. It definitely was confusing when I did first play it a long awhile ago though, lol.
Some 'pi' (normal cards) are worth two normal cards. If you decide to use joker cards in the game (card that doesn't belong to any family), they are always worth 2 normal cards. Oh yeah, and if you found a matching card on the field, then you flip a card and that card also matches the card that you just matched, then you can't collect those cards. You leave those three cards on the field. When someone matches the three cards, opponents give him one normal card.
so glad u guys did this video cos i've been wanting to know how to play for so long...... but i gotta say, i'm still confused!!! maybe after the first hundred practice sessions i'll begin to understand!! lol
Oh i didnt know there was a similar game in korea, too^^ in japan, you have almost the same gameplay and it's called hanafuda (played with the same type of cards) , but you get ponits a little bit different. Now I can try to play the korean game with my friends , yay thank you guise! ^W^
The way Soo Zee plays is maybe not the easiest way to start Go Stop. There's a variety of rules and each neighborhood, family, etc has its own twist to it. Best way to start playing is to find a very plain set of rules and try. Maybe the japanese version is easier? I suggest trying to find a little software program, they usually don't make it too hard and have tutorials. You learn the family of card and which one are the most valuable as you go. Or, you can do a google image search for it, they have many picture that explain points system and family/what they represent. When you get use to it, this game is highly addictive
places to play go stop to get the basic rules down: neopets! there's a game called godori (which is also what it's called when you get the set of 3 bird cards) and on android phones, try nuri gostop lite. :) hope this helps people who want to learn how to play.
Go Stop is easy to play. Easy way to learn. There are 12 families, each family consists of 4 cards. Each family represent a month, thus 12 families. December cards are not as special as others. For example, you you collect three Gwang (light) cards, you get three points, except if one of the Gwang cards is 'December Gwang'. Then you only get 2 points. Also, there are four birdy cards in total (excluding Gwang card with crane). December birdy is useless. If you collect the other three, you win.
Ok: #1 - It's called Go-Stop b/c when I was watching this vid I would press go, then stop it b/c I didn't understand the rule you just explained. #2 - When you said it was confusing at the beginning of the vid that was and UNDERSTATEMENT! #3 - Martina almost got all the candy, but Soozee put one in her mouth without Martina noticing. I think that's grounds for flogging. Or something. uhm, yeah. That's it. Thanks!
This is actually a gambling game. When you say GO, a point is added to the final count, hence more money, cookies, etc.. for you when you win. So if you say GO three times, you get three more points. But you have to be careful and see if the other players might be nearing 3 points, in which they'll say STOP and you have to give money or whatever it is to not just the winner, but the other players as well because you lost even though you said GO.
Ohh this game seems really fun in a hard challenging kind of way. I want to learn how to play! But wouldn't just make sense for the person to always stop the game since it will always ensure them a win? What would be the point of continuing by choosing "GO" and then risking your chance of winning to someone else?
Collect all blue flag cards or all red flag cards with writings on them to get points. There are more ways to get points but these are the special one. To collect card, you find a card on the field that is in the same family as a card you have in your hand. If nothing matches, you put your card on the field. If the card you took from the deck matches the card you just put on the field, you get to take a normal card from the opponents. So basically you get free points if that happens
My little 6 year old sister beats us all...shes the best at playing Godori and Hanafuda. People in Hawaii play this all the time so Hawaii people kind of have their own version but we do play the Korean and Japanese version a lot.
It's the same cards and the same game. Well similar. They use the same thing and the same game but Korean and the hawaiian version have their own rules. KoiKoi is the japanese version of Hanafuda, Go Stop or Hwatu is the korean version and Hawaiian Koikoi or Sakura is the hawaiian version.
I personally enjoy Hanafuda more because its a simple game (except if you play with Yaku) and I'm a simple person. But playing GoStop with Korean women is just a really enjoyable game.
I make one rule collect. Soozie said if Martina has no KWANG, she would get double points but that's only if Soozie got point by KWANG by collect more than 3 cards. Not always
I have a confession to make. I will never get bored or tired of watching you guys no matter what. I love you all.
Koi Koi uses the same cards! :3 The cards themselves are called hanafuda (flower cards), and Koreans and Japanese play different games with them.
I remember seeing this video 8 years ago, and today, I found myself in possession of some Go-Stop cards and came back to actually learn how to play. This feels very full-circle.

I just started watching Reply 1997 last night and saw her parents playing this game :) it looks really fun!
Hey i bought a pack in SK too, though i haven't been bothered to search up the rules Thanks for this vid!!
Thank you for posting this. I've seen this in sooooo many dramas and when I looked up the directions online I found it too confusing.
I still don't really understand it but I have a clearer idea than before.

when the camera zooms up on their cards it reminds me of the thief game from running man
*jaw drops* I've played that game online before...sort of. There's a very similar mini-game in Billy vs Snakeman with almost identical cards and similar rules.
You seriously need a million subscribers!
I love Soo Zee's ring!
i like soo zee's nails =]

SOOZEE!!
hahaha when I was little, I found a stack of go stop cards so i brought them out and started playing with them (not knowing what it actually was) and my parents face when so red when they saw me...
I used to play this with my granddad when I was younger :) Such lovely memories.
You guys should also try playing using missions. The most common missions combo is the ino-shika-cho (boar-deer-butterfly). It's the main animal combo in Koi Koi (the Japanese version of Go Stop). The winner multiplies his or her win by 4 if they have it.
omg i just realised.... THATS WHERE THE INU-SHIKA-CHO COMBI FROM NARUTO CAME FROM!
That was literally my favorite! Great video!
Soo Zee's a straight ballin' croupier with her spade rengs!
The game in Summer Wars is a little different. It's called Hanafuda (koi-koi). You can play it online, it is super fun!
I think the basic system is simple enough. Match cards, get points. How you get points from your matching, though, is the confusing part
Soozee's subtle facial expressions are classic. Cracks me up.
I love playing with Hanafuda cards! But I only know how to play the Japanese version of the game called Koi-Koi, which is pretty similar, but I think its funner. Mostly because you get to yell out "koi-koi" which more or less means "BRING IT ON!". XD

yea this is just the more famous korean alternative... i think.. u can check google....
Tessa Maritha yes those cards originated in Japan. In Korea, hanfuda calls hwatu and they play go-stop and sutda instead koikoi and hachihachi
Play this all the time, it is super addictive
this game still seems confusing O.O but i've seen this in k dramas a lot
Yep that's why I want to learn how to play jt
+Selena Chen *it
Same here.
I want play this game! But, for the first time it's a little bit difficult for me. All of these cards looks really similar :D
I love Soozees ring!

What I figured out from the whole video is that I'm in love with Soozee $:
MONOPOLY DEAL. SIMON, YOUR AWESOMENESS LEVEL IS OFF THE CHARTS!
This looks so fun!
i've always wanted to learn how to play this!!!
Love your ring SooZee
Oh my gosh I love this game!! It's called Hanafuda in Japan
This is the same game called "Hanafuda" in Japan (or as I was taught anyway). Uses the same cards and matching system. Like an Asian rummy.
Ooh I wanna see more Soo Zee! She's so pretty!
the easiest way to learn is by playing it. that's how i learnt. and there's poktan, 'bomb' which is when you have all three other cards of the family. u go "POKTAN!" and throw em down when the matching card appears. u also get one card from the other players. and every go counts as one point

Ever seen summer wars? It looks kinda like the card game in that anime.
But yea this game looks like it has a steep learning curve.
I LOVE YOU GUYS SO MUCH!!
i looove Soo Zee's green ring, with a clover ( i think) on it !!!
It's called Hanafuda in Japan and the Japanese have different rules. I play with my friends at school all the time.

please do more videos with Soozee!
even to determine which card match which card is already confusing.haha.thanks to you guys,im always so curious about how to play this go stop.:)
that looks really fun!
the whole time I was watching this, I was like, "whaaaaat?"
saaaame
so glad u guys did this video cos i've been wanting to know how to play for so long...... but i gotta say, i'm still confused!!! maybe after the first hundred practice sessions i'll begin to understand!! lol

the 'families' actually represent the 12 months I remember learning that before
Wow you guys totally explained this wellXD My mom plays this game and it seems wayyyyyy complicated!
lol soozee's so chill
places to play go stop to get the basic rules down: neopets! there's a game called godori (which is also what it's called when you get the set of 3 bird cards) and on android phones, try nuri gostop lite. :) hope this helps people who want to learn how to play.

I love this game so fun.
Soozee!! I love your rings!! Where did u get them!
Haha I love this game. In my culture we call it "Hanaguda"
No way! I LOVE this game!
Ok:
#1 - It's called Go-Stop b/c when I was watching this vid I would press go, then stop it b/c I didn't understand the rule you just explained.
#2 - When you said it was confusing at the beginning of the vid that was and UNDERSTATEMENT!
#3 - Martina almost got all the candy, but Soozee put one in her mouth without Martina noticing. I think that's grounds for flogging. Or something. uhm, yeah.
That's it. Thanks!
Yay a video on Go Stop!.. Now if only I had someone to play with :-/
SooZee's ring! So adorable, i want! :D
It's another version of Hanafuda or Hwattu. The game was introduced to Korea in 16th century.
I love how at the end SooZee had like 30 points and Simon and Martina had none... hustled!
My korean friend played this on his ipad and I made him teach me how to play. So addicted to it.

Soozee's such a fashionista! Cute city girl look.
i like soozee's rings
SooZee has the cutest english voice ever omf ;-;
My little 6 year old sister beats us all...shes the best at playing Godori and Hanafuda. People in Hawaii play this all the time so Hawaii people kind of have their own version but we do play the Korean and Japanese version a lot.
it's a knockoff hat from the gg igab brand (from what i remember), they have a video on their openthehappy channel
It's the same cards and the same game. Well similar. They use the same thing and the same game but Korean and the hawaiian version have their own rules. KoiKoi is the japanese version of Hanafuda, Go Stop or Hwatu is the korean version and Hawaiian Koikoi or Sakura is the hawaiian version.
was this imported from Japan!? cause that definitely be Koi-koi
+Sasukio10 cards in koi koi and go stop are the same but yes the cards are originally japanese
in palau we call it hanafuda; the rules are similar on how we play it!
nice ring, Soo Zee
I just love playing go stop
This card game is originally Japanese card game but it's much more popular in Korea.
You guys so make a segment for Games in Korea :D
I love how Soo Zee and Simon are so used to Martina's antics that they don't even react anymore.
LOL. I love how Soozee is just used to Martina being weird. She's not even phased.
I personally enjoy Hanafuda more because its a simple game (except if you play with Yaku) and I'm a simple person. But playing GoStop with Korean women is just a really enjoyable game.
I love this game!!!!! I have this at home!!!
This is the game they played in the drama Reply 1997 xD
heh I loved that scene that the mom gets all points and the dad is getting upset lol
I think I get it.....looks like fun! I wanna play!
Did Suzy gave us 2 middle fingers in 2:57........... ok not important! Eyes on the game! Simon totally has a good hand!
I like how simon acts so surprised when martina cursed, but did he even look at his hat say?? :D
I make one rule collect. Soozie said if Martina has no KWANG, she would get double points but that's only if Soozie got point by KWANG by collect more than 3 cards. Not always
It still boggles my mind :D
