    We may have met. I was handing out ribbons that say "My creations contain blood and bad words." I know I noticed your costumes though - as an aside, your makeup in your wrap-up section of this video looks flawless!
    Some random thoughts - the temperature was for sure noticeable. Despite the warm common areas I was freezing the first two nights in my hotel room. I kept turning up the temp but it didn't seem to make a difference. I loved the excessive space though. The old hotel seemed to have a smaller overall area, except, as you point out, by the pool. Obviously the hotel wants the pool area to be open for other guests to use, but I think we could have spread out a little more without impeding anyone's access. And I agree about having to pay for drinks being a bit of a surprise. I do think that the meeting rooms were designed for small sort of corporate lectures where participants have a notepad or laptop for notes rather than the extra space needed for crafting. The organizers seemed pretty responsive and creative in solving those issues though.
    Agreed about the marketplace seeming small. I've noticed that at the post-Covid Dapper Day expos also. I think a lot of people who have been running small businesses have had trouble lately and have been forced to close or limit travel and expo fees. I hope it bounces back.
    I live in Orange County. The drive to this hotel was better than the previous one for me personally. I also preferred the in-hotel restaurant at the new place. I ate there a few times and felt there were a few more choices than the previous location. I walked up and down Century Blvd. to check out the other options in the nearby hotels. I dislike driving in that area of LA, so I tried to find options that didn't involve moving my car.
    Honestly, I feel like it's pretty much a draw between the two hotels. They each have as many positives as negatives.
    Thank you for the review! It's nice to have someone who captures it.

      Yep, we must have met, since I have that ribbon! Crazy about the too cold hotel room -- it sounds like most people really had the opposite problem! That's really too bad about marketplace/expo vendors -- I hope more small businesses like that come back! And I agree - there were negatives and positives about both hotels.

    It was great meeting you. I agree with all of what you said about the hotel.
    What was the hardest part was not having great food selections. After a long day of activities and not really wanting to travel, all that was available was the hotel food. It got really boring after awhile and was way overpriced. This was my first time going. When you don’t know a ton of people and didn’t want to pay the gala price, you kind of got stuck eating there. The service was super slow. I found if you ordered it from your room you got it a lot faster. It was nice doing that. Especially because the temperature was better in some rooms versus the dining room.
    I went super early to the social events and there wasn’t a large variety of snacks. From the sounds of it, it was better in years past. I think having some premade stuff would have been nice and so much better on the stomach.
    I am glad you went this year instead of not attending. I was truly looking forward to meeting you and am glad I got the chance.

    • @LadyRebeccaFashions
      @LadyRebeccaFashions  Рік тому

      It was great to meet you too! Interesting that the room service was going faster than the restaurant! I only ate in there once, but it was definitely not speedy. I actually wound up ordering a Walmart grocery delivery, as well as a dominos order, and ate that all for almost the whole weekend, which worked really well, but it would have been nice if they had had more snacks at the events too.

    Hi Rebecca! I'm not on council but I can answer some of your CoCo questions. Part of the reason for the venue change was travel from the airport to the hotel. Companies like Super Shuttle went under during the pandemic and many people last year either didn't attend due to not being able to afford a rental car or had difficulties getting to the hotel. There were also a lot of issues with hotel staffing at the previous location. So the decision was made to move the event closer to LAX. And everyone here in L.A. screamed at the mere thought of traveling to the seventh circle of hell (aka LAX) BUT it was definitely better for people coming in from out of town.
    In short, the Sheraton didn't think we'd have as many people as we did. I believe we were told that WiFi was available throughout the hotel. Room setup is *usually* under the preview of the establishment. Not sure what to tell you about the snack or the lunches. Where did all the AC go? My room. We froze. Sorry. Keep in mind that the LAX Sheraton is right by the beach . . . about 10+ degrees cooler than the rest of LA. I live 30 miles from the hotel in the SG Valley and it was nearly 100F at home while it was about 85F at the hotel.
    One thing you didn't mention was the elevators. Five elevators for a hotel with 15 floors, but only three were working at any one time. A problem if you were on the 12th floor. Most days it took us 15 minutes just to get an elevator that had room. And let's not forget the lack of counter space in the bathrooms. The sink was lovely but not at the cost of countertop space.
    Might I suggest that you fill out the questionnaire with your thoughts if you haven't already done so? Or, you can message me privately and I can give you the dean's email address and you can email her. I hang out with many women who are on the Council during the weekly sewing circles and they are very interested in hearing everyone's opinions. I think the plan is to have it in the same location next year pending if some issues they already knew about are addressed.

    • @LadyRebeccaFashions
      @LadyRebeccaFashions  Рік тому +2

      Yep, I already filled out the survey. You're the second person here to mention a freezing hotel room, so I guess the rooms were just really poorly regulated, which is definitely an issue. It's interesting that you say they weren't expecting that many of us -- was attendance not still way down from 2019? And while there was Wi-Fi everywhere else in the hotel, I noticed that it was a different network in the conference rooms, one which we apparently weren't paying for (or at least, weren't given the password for). Tbh, the elevators seemed very on par with the slowness from the Marriott, so that didn't bother me too much.

      @@LadyRebeccaFashions I was not directly involved with planning of CoCo23, but more of a part of the gripe sessions that always accompany putting on any event (😊). Apparetly the Sheraton was reluctant to give us too much as they weren't sure about what we were or if what we said we needed was actually what we needed. It didn't help that the large ballroom that we thought we'd have access to was booked for the California Bar Association for an exam. A lot of decisions were made with the assumption that we'd have it, then plan B needed to be enacted when it was learned that it was already booked. Additionally, the waitstaff at the hotel's restaurant was totally unprepared for us. I was talking with our waiter and he said that there were 600 people for breakfast and that he wasn't sure what they'd do if they got that many for dinner.

    Thank you for taking us along! I don't think I'll ever be skilled enough to make costumes as elaborate as you, but I can dream!
    Also, speaking as someone who is friends with a convention coordinator for an organization I volunteer with, do not be afraid to be vocal about your needs with hotel staff and management. We were, funny enough, at an airport Marriott this year and had major issues with the meeting rooms overheating - in April in the Midwest! It also literally rained on us inside during a thunderstorm during our Saturday evening banquet. You're paying large amounts of money for the space; it's their job to accommodate their guests within reason.

    Always enjoy your convention blogs. The costumes you showed were so gorgeous and fun! The idea of a historical undies event sounds like an absolute hoot. It sounds like this is a pretty small to medium sized convention/seminar. It's sad that it seems it was lower in quality than what you experienced before. Hopefully they can take the feedback and improve it, even if the next one has to be at the same place. Lack of proper air-conditioning in a Cali hotel seems crazy to me.

    • @LadyRebeccaFashions
      @LadyRebeccaFashions  Рік тому +1

      Yeah, the lack of air conditioning was really the big thing for me. I know the attendance was lower than it was in 2019, and since the hotel was so much larger, it made things feel somewhat sparse.

  • @jac_and_the_making_of
    @jac_and_the_making_of Рік тому +1

    I think if the plan for the event is to grow, it's going to be a real struggle after the difficulties (AC/no wifi/curfew for the outside) for that to happen. I haven't been before, (I didn't go this year mostly because I forgot it was happening because I'm drowning in work stress), but if the issues aren't sorted I probably won't go.
    On the upside, everyone's costumes looked amazing and that would 100% be my draw to go. Plus, meeting others in person that love to create is wonderful.

  • @sleepycalico

    Always fun to see what people have made. Some wonderful embroidery this year.
    BUT. The lack of air conditioning, or even mediocre air conditioning, in this era should be a contract breaker. It is a critical necessity today, and if a hotel cuts corners on it, they don't deserve anyone's business. And why LA in the summer in the first place? Is that where Costume College organizers live? Oh, maybe it is proximity to the fabric district. Because that just seems nuts.
    Hey, organizers, Berkeley stays cool, has major hotel chains, and is artsy-crafty and has some boutique fabric and lace shops and is a quick jump to side trips to SF.

    I always like the costume college vlogs. I considered going this year, but I didn't think getting on a plane to LA at 9 months pregnant was wise or really allowed.
    For your classes, a 4hr knitting class is extream. I know the teacher is helping a large number of students a correcting things, but that's when you cap the class at 6 or 7 and have the option of mutiple sessions. I've crocheted since summer of 1999 (first learning sesson with my friend was 2 hours) and a 4 hour session for me now is a little much I know crochet yet the focus required is similar.
    I think I might hold off on attempting costume college until I hear the temperature issues get under control. I don't do well in hot temp as it is. I'm also not that nice about it when a place should have AC and it doesn't. I try to avoid those situations.

      I was actually pleasantly surprised that the knitting class was quite small. I think there was only 9 of us? But still too long a class. I do hope that the temp issue is worked out for next year - so weird they've had the same issue two years running in two different hotels.

    In the exhibit room, there is a dress at the 7:18 mark. It's mosaic. What is it made of? If you remember.

      I ran the Exhibit room this year. The dress was by Lydia Dupont, and it was made with glass mosaic tiles. This is what she wrote: I was looking to replicate the mosaic wall at Disney California Adventure since I’ve been wanting to do it for years. I gave up since I only had the regular glass tiles so I just decided to make my own design and didn’t know how it was going to look until I got to the wall.

      I'm a little second hand disappointed in CC for y'all. I think I discovered the costuming community in 2019 so you, Noelle, Christine, Bernadette, Kathy, Marissa… were all there and the costumes were incredible and it did look packed! And then Covid hit and it looks like costume college hasn't recovered… Not that any of us really have. But I think if I had spent the money and taken the time and made all the arrangements to go, that I would have been disappointed in the offerings this year. Especially if the environment was bad. I cannot tolerate heat especially if I am in polyester. I hope you enjoyed yourself nonetheless!

      Yeah, it's definitely a smaller event than it was in 2019, with a lot less of the familiar faces, though I did find that a handful had come back this year (not UA-camrs though).

      It was the LAX Sheraton. The Wi-Fi was fine everywhere except the conference rooms, where there was a password-protected network.

    The costumes were so beautiful but the background for the event was super ugly and depressing. Next year, they should have the event at a beautiful vintage hotel or mansion or something where the background and atmosphere match the costuming. That hotel looked super generic and sad. It was kind of depressing to watch because there was such a mismatch between the attendees and the location.

      Unfortunately large events like this have to be held at convention-style hotels. There's no historic places large enough, as far as I know.

      There are actually several in California (mansions and other historic buildings that host large weddings or other events) but perhaps they would not fit in the budget. @@LadyRebeccaFashions

      Oh, I just wasn't expecting that many people. I think they were trying to get people to not line up, by doing the number system, but people did anyway.
