From 1933: The very peppy "Dancing On A Rainbow" Number with Maureen O'Sullivan. The end of the number was influenced with German Expressionist filmmaking of the era, I think.

There was a sequence in Gold Diggers of Nineteen Thirty Three, featuring a male chorus singing My Forgotten Man with Joan Blondell, this clearly reproduced this chorus line of dancers/s, one above the other, depending on which came first, of course. Then decades later Elvis Presley repeated the idea in one of his 50s films, with the sequence, Jailhouse Rock. Did that idea begin with this?

It's like a cross between the early talkie and the later more visually fluid numbers.
Yes, the dancers in the background seem to evoke a German Expressionist Film of that era.

@SuzieQ222 This is from "Stage Mother" and the blonde is Maureen's stage mother in the movie, Alice Brady, a wonderful comedienne!
This number was designed by Albertina Rasch, who was very prominant in early talkies as a dance director.

A bit late replying but it would have been far too early for technicolour. Early still phography was there but not movie film.
