i say sow it. i took the elastic from an old nike sweatpants and it was sowed onto it too 😂
what would you recommend doing if the sweat pants have zips on the side?
If you don't want zippers, rip them off. And sew.
If the zipper is in the hem, I think it would be to remove the zipper and put a new one
Try adding the elastic around the zipper , leaving out the zipper section
