People don’t realise the difficulty for family members assisting with a loved one with mental illness. Unless they are classed as being a present danger to themselves or others it is near impossible for them to be sectioned.
If they do not have insight into their illness, they may refuse treatment, medication, assessment and advice from doctors and family. There must be millions of families in this difficult situation with a loved one in an incredibly bad way but still ‘not ill enough’ for anything to be done. The current system is set up not to be preventative and unless the system changes, this will keep happening

  • @JamieLofthouse

I worked on the front line of mental health for years. The danger of news articles about knife welding schizophrenics is completely unhelpful. None of my clients with this debilitating illness was a threat to anyone. In fact, they were more at risk of exploitative people and injury to themselves than other people. Our system is broken and an entirely new model of community based support is desperately needed.

@@JamieLofthouse I've worked in some Psychiatric Hospitals in Ireland and what I can say is, never underestimate anyone whom you have seen in the service. While not everyone but there are some mental health patients whom required longer inpatient stay, seclusion, 24-hr monitoring /high surveillance for good reasons (or shall I say bad?). Non-compliance with medication, illicit drug use, stress and poor community support can easily deteriorate a well-known patient's mental health. I agree with you on a new model of community based support is needed but not neglecting the importance of adequate amount of time in the unit if required.

As a mental health support worker I totally agree that people with schizophrenia are much more likely to be a victim of abuse then to cause harm to anyone else. That said I completely empathize with the family and send my deepest condolences.

I was waiting to be picked up by my family and I decided to go for a walk to the riverside once my cannula was removed as I had been on the ward for so long. Fortunately where I was standing was not were it occurred but I was close enough to the commotion, I mainly saw police.
