I worked on the front line of mental health for years. The danger of news articles about knife welding schizophrenics is completely unhelpful. None of my clients with this debilitating illness was a threat to anyone. In fact, they were more at risk of exploitative people and injury to themselves than other people. Our system is broken and an entirely new model of community based support is desperately needed.

As a mental health support worker I totally agree that people with schizophrenia are much more likely to be a victim of abuse then to cause harm to anyone else. This is a horrible horrific case but very isolated and I really hope this case isn't used to scaremonger the general public. That said I completely empathize with the family and send my deepest condolences.

People don’t realise the difficulty for family members assisting with a loved one with mental illness. Unless they are classed as being a present danger to themselves or others it is near impossible for them to be sectioned.
If they do not have insight into their illness, they may refuse treatment, medication, assessment and advice from doctors and family. There must be millions of families in this difficult situation with a loved one in an incredibly bad way but still ‘not ill enough’ for anything to be done. The current system is set up not to be preventative and unless the system changes, this will keep happening

One of my neighbours who lived 8 doors down from me had schizophrenia. One day, he just decided to stop taking his meds. He made a nonsensical live Facebook feed, then a few hours later killed his neighbour because he complained about the music. Another neighbour had a heart attack and died upon witnessing the killing which was by all accounts horrific. The guy was originally from Bulgaria I think. I had no idea who he was. The day of the Westminster bridge attacks, I was getting discharged from St Thomas's Hospital after a month long stay on the cardiac ward. I was waiting to be picked up by my family and I decided to go for a walk to the riverside once my cannula was removed as I had been on the ward for so long. Fortunately where I was standing was not were it occurred but I was close enough to the commotion, I mainly saw police. I didn't realise the significance of the event until news coverage the day after.

Yes. Lots of people with mental health issues end up self-medicating. Newsflash: a lot of prescription meds for mental health problems have unpleasant and debilitating side-effects. They might even make you feel worse than your already miserable symptoms. Some people choose alcohol or drugs to make themselves forget how horrible they feel. I don't know how much of a choice you could honestly say they have - they are severely damaged people, who are desperately trying to feel better somehow, in a society that alternately neglects, patronises and demonises them.
