Hey Jen! Commenting in response to what you said near the end of the video about the influence you've had on your viewers with Nicci French. You did inspire me to read Losing You and though I flew through it I didn't love it - but you speak so passionately about their range that I plan to pick up others. However I'd like to tell you that I'm a librarian and having Nicci French up my sleeve as a recommendation for crime lovers has been AMAZING. I'm in Australia and they don't seem to be very well-known here, so we always have stuff on the shelf (very important when you're giving recommendations), and their London-flavoured stories always seems to please my readers. It's lovely to be able to confidently recommend a relatively niche author that I trust will have SOMETHING that appeals to everyone. So thank you for making my life easier and the lives of crime readers in Melbourne infinitely richer! xx

Another author your crime readers may enjoy is Lisa Jewell. Her novels are engaging and have a nice flavour of England.

This video brought me so much joy. The Frieda Klein books shaped my lockdown experience, going for walks by myself around London listening to the audiobooks. I've just saved all of the Nicci French stand alones that Scribd have and am so excited to try some of your other recommendations. (The Red Room was my first stand alone Nicci French and I loved it).

Nicci French is very popular in the Netherlands. More than 6 million books have been sold since their first book. Sometimes the Dutch translation is even earlier to read han the original titel in GB.
So I have read this summer " Wie niet horen wil" the Dutch titel of The Unheard. And for the first time I was a bit disappointed. It took me a long time to get into the story. It was a bit to slow and I could not feel the tension I was used to in their other books.

Thank you for this video. I have been holding off reading the final Frieda Klein novel because -- feelings. I have read/listened to all of them and just cannot bring myself to say goodbye. In and attempt to drag this out as long as possible, I packed up all my physical copies of the FK series and sent them to my mother. She called me last week to let me know that she's already hooked and will definitely be paying this series forward when she's finished. She's probably going to beat me to the end as she's not as sentimental as me.

I just completed “Losing You” as my first Nicci French standalone & enjoyed it immensely! I had to check my past book diaries to see if I’d read any others, not realizing if I had stumbled on them before, &, sure enough, there was “Blue Monday” read some years ago. When you were describing the plot, it all came back to me immediately. Now, on to the rest of the series! Thank you, Jen, for helping to keep us informed & motivated! 📚👓

I think I'm going to have to rewatch this so that I can note down the ones that most appealed to me. As you said, 23 books is a lot and I was losing track as I was listening to you and thinking "ooh, that sounds good....maybe not that one so much, but wait this one..." Jen, I'm wondering if you read "Something Missing" by Matthew Dicks. It is and it is not a crime novel. It starts out a bit whimsical, but then get quite tense at the end. I really love it, and something you mentioned in this video brought it to mind (I forget which Nicci French book made me think of it).
I just put a hold on the only Nicci French audiobooks available through my library and I'm looking forward to reading some of the print copies after I make a dent in the pile of books I am currently working on.

I'm listening to What to Do When Someone Dies right now. Your description of the Frieda Klein series reminds me of Marcia Muller's Sharon McCone series. McCone is a detective, not a therapist, but she is surrounded by the family-she-chose (and their families) so there is a lot of connection from one story to the next.

I disagree about killing me softly that was the first one I read about 24 years ago and what got me hooked.

Wonderful video, and thank you so much for your reviews. I love your enthusiasm for the Nicci French books. I've only read the Frieda Klein series and _House of Corrections_ so far, but will definitely read more of their books. What I love most about the Frieda Klein books is that the characters feel just so real, like they could be your neighbours next door or some friends of yours. And after reading all eight books, it sort of feels like you're indeed saying goodbye to good friends.

Hi Jen am working my way through the Fried K series ( i review every book i read on goodreads so takes a while). I, too, really like them but not madly madly so. Tinkrr Tailor is my favourite book of all time. I used to read Fortunes of War (Olivia Manning) avidly every year but so many people were v disparaging about her as a person. Really like Graham Hurley's Faraday and Winter series particularly as it progresses. And Mick Herron' s Slow Horses series! Though difficult to recommend to customers because not everyone wants their spies mixed with humour. Great roundup of NFrench, Jen!

I'm curious as to what you thought of The Memory Game: I found it to be very well written, but also perhaps a bit dated conceptually in that psychiatry/psychology doesn't seem to be as split now between the "recovered memories are not credible" and "all recovered memories are valid and must be believed" camps. Suppressed memories are indeed a thing which can be highly traumatic to recall and address, but it is also understood that memory itself is not always an exactly reliable source of clear and accurate information. I wonder what your perspective is on how these issues are addressed and/or resolved in the novel?
Of course, no obligation to answer, but please and thank you if you do 🙂

Ok the Frieda Klein cast list is so much fun, although difficult for me as all I have consumed entertainment wise in the last 2 years is Drag Race and UA-cam… Here are some of my thoughts…
    Frieda Klein - Thandiye Newton
Rueben - I mean yes… he is Dominic West!
    Yvette Long - Beannie Feldstien
Karlsson - I got Martin Sheen vibes
    Chloe - Millicent Simmonds
    Sandy - Idris Elba
    Dean Reeve - Paul Bettany
    Hal Bradshaw - Christoph Waltz

Jen, I finally went out and got myself Blue Monday and finished reading it last night - quite breathlessly, I might add, so immersed I was in that world. Then I came back and found this video! I read it because of your recommendation, so thank you so much - I loved Blue Monday with my whole heart. I have already placed an order for the rest of the FK books with my bookstore, something I don't often do with series, and waiting with bated breath.
I was curious - if you've read Tana French's Dublin Murder Squad series and/or Kate Atkinson's Jackson Brodie series, did you think there were any similarities between them and the FK series? Not specifics per se, but something about how the characters are approached and the almost quiet yet effective buildup of the plot, with its various strands and many characters, reminded me of French and Atkinson in different ways.
Completely agree with Dominic West as Reuben, although I was picturing a hazy but wild Michael Sheen as I read. Frieda in my head is a brunette, and although I agree that Gillian Anderson would be lovely, Frieda's quiet command and confidence kind of reminded me of Julianna Margulies' Alicia Florrick in the Good Wife. Can't wait for an adaptation anyway!
Thank you once again for this video and all your recs, Jen. Have a great day!

Re. the Frieda Klein series ... I warmed to the characters very slowly, but now that I'm done, I really miss them. I love that you've picked actors for the series, but I have to think on it a while to see whom I would pick for those characters. Really appreciated the reviews on their standalone books - very helpful. I read some and listened to some, and I agree that Chalmers did a beautiful job of narration! Thank you!

Hi Jen, I just wanted to say thank you for this great overview of the Nicci French books.
I often find it difficult to find and settle into a book as I am a bit of a fussy reader. I recently read some reviews about ‘Killing Me Softly’ and gave it a go. I liked it, so then I read ‘Secret Smile.’ As you say, the endings can sometimes be a little bit of a let-down but the thing that keeps you reading is the writing style which I find with these books is really enjoyable. I think I have also become addicted and searched online for some more Nicci French and came across your review. Interesting to see that where I have started are not the books on top of your recommended list. Anyhow, I am so pleased to have found an author (or should that be authors?) whose books I can get into and your guide has really helped! All the best, Jim

i‘ve been saving this video to watch ever since it was posted. just knowing it was waiting for me made me happy.
finally i got to sit down with a cup of coffee and dive in. bliss. ☕️
listening to the frieda klein books (because of your recommendation) this spring bolted me out of an enormous reading slump. i‘d always stupidly thought that listening to a book was somehow „not proper reading“, but frieda and the excellent narration of beth chamers made me abandon that incredibly ableist stance. audiobooks have now become a fixture in my everyday reading and i am so happy about that. i only wish more of nicci french‘s books were available on audio in austria (i.e. „blue monday“ is not available in austria on audio.). some of the older titles aren‘t even available as books here and „thanks“ to stupid bre//it ordering from the uk is no longer an option.
    but enough kvetching.
where can i sign the petition to make your dream cast (and now mine) happen? you are spot on, i think! gilian anderson is a given, as is kim bodnia. dominic west seems way too young to play reuben. but - he‘s dominic west and he could play the cat and i‘d be happy to watch, so… totally on board with richard armitage (because it‘s richard armitage. he could also play the cat and i‘d watch). david thewlis - brilliant!
most inspired pick: ken branagh as hal bradshaw. oh my - how fabulous would that be!! i would so love to loathe him.
the last 18+ months have been, well, you know. 📉
but - i‘ve started watching book tube, found this channel, through it frieda klein, discovered audiobooks, started reading again (used to be a voracious reader, but mental health issues dulled my joy and need for books for a very long time. at the same time my eye sight deteriorated and reading anything but fairly large print became harder and harder.), and i learned to make fresh pasta.
„thanks jen“ is surely inadequate, but it‘ll have to do.
lots of love from tiny-town austria! looking forward to your new book (i‘ve pre-ordered) and any and all of your videos. - monica 🐾📚📚

Hi Jen! Thank you so much for this video! This summer, I went to the charity shop just after watching one of your videos. I saw the first Frieda Klein book and remember how much joy Nicci French books gave you. So then, a few weeks later, I had read seven of them. I'm saving the Day of the Dead because I cannot quite say goodbye to the not-knowing. However, I have been reading other books of theirs and have been enjoying it so much. Thank you for the introduction to this genre! It's so lovely to completely disappear in a book and I love that these have strong female characters that also make it crawl less under my skin as a young woman. I just started with Camilla Läckberg, I'm curious if you'd like that too because I think you would (thusfar). Anyhow, thanks for this video and your recommendations!!!!

I may have to reread The Red Room as I read it years ago, long before Frieda, and I didn’t like it at all, it was my least favourite. I’d be very interested to see if, in light of how much I love Frieda Klein, I would enjoy a reread and whether I would find it similar. I’ve only got 3-4 left to read I think, although I’m very hazy on some of the earlier books. I really enjoy The Memory Game, and Land of the Living. They are such amazing writers. I may have to go and read one now! 🙂📚

I thought yes Nina was frantic trying to find her daughter but she was SOOOO rude and was like I'm a mum and I'd be frantic too but would not be so rude, I do however agree I wanted to know where Charlie was and all the twists and turns in it were good. That’s funny, I hear from some readers that they don’t like Frieda for the same reason, but I suppose it depends on whether or not you prefer to like a main character in order to really enjoy a book. I don’t actually dislike Frieda but I know she’s not a perfect person and that doesn’t in any way hamper my enjoyment, in fact I think it heightens it. I think it’s interesting how we will approach this kind of thing from different angles. I hope you like Frieda ☺️ x

Oooo great video. I've been reading Nicci French since the early days - the Memory Game and the Safe House - and I so look forward to each one because I know it's going to be a reliable page turner. so comforting to be in safe hands like that. And I've read and reread most of them many times, to the point where the cracks start to show. Too many in one go and you will start thinking "not another woman who the police/authorities refuse to believe and so has to save herself" - but they do that because it works, and the characters are distinct and memorable - Jane, Alice, Kit, Abigail, Astrid, Miranda, Nadia, Holly, even Frida etc, in some ways they're all the same woman, they share a lot of characteristics and yet they do all have individual and separate personalities in my memory. Unpopular opinion - I kind of hate Frida. Don't get me wrong, I still devoured each novel as it came out, but Frida herself annoys me intensely :)

Had this bookmarked when you posted this when you did and now going back to this because I finally managed to get the entire Frida Klein series from my library! Hurray! I wonder if you would ever do Dorothy Komsoon's books? Ive always loved her books though I've read two so far. She has one of the most memorable characters in her stories! Would love to hear your thoughts!

Awesome video and I will be diving into their books this month!! Have you heard of another husband and wife duo: Ambrose Parry? It looks like they have a trilogy out right now that is set in 19th century Edinburg and are historical crime novels. I’ve heard about it not a long time ago and didn’t hear much about those books but found it interesting there is another husband/wife duo! ☺️

I really love Nicci French books, They are definitely an autobuy author for me. I have read the Frieda Klein series till saturday so far and read a few of their standalone novels. I think Until it's over is one of my faves standalones, I did not really like the red room.

Nicci French is also very popular in the Netherlands. Sometimes their books are first published here with a Dutch title , even before publishing in GB.
So I have read their latest book " Wie niet horen wil" ( The Unheard) this summer. And although I am a great fan I was a bit disappointed. It took me a long time to get into the story. And I also had difficulties of believing the plot.

I didn’t enjoy Blue Monday because I couldn’t get over Frieda breaking her oath of client confidentiality and telling everything to the carpenter (even tho’ he fell through the roof). The narrator was fabulous, just as you said. I will read Tuesday’s Gone because the storytelling was definitely well done.
I’m not sure how I feel about Frieda. I’m not usually a fan of reserved, private main characters. I mean, if the main character is hidden from even the reader, what’s the point, y’know? As the reader, I want to know her thoughts, feelings, and motivations because I need to care about the character if I’m going to follow them on their adventures.

Hey Jen, just a thought while listening to this, do you think you could talk a bit about what it’s like working with an illustrator from an author’s perspective? I’m learning to become an illustrator and I’m interested to know from an author’s perspective what are typical questions, concerns, and expectations you have, or that the publisher has, but also what is a typical process of working with an illustrator from the start of the process to finish. Sorry this is probably a big question to ask and maybe your audience isn’t interested but just a thought. I value your opinion on lots of things haha and would love to hear what it’s been like for you working with illustrators... Thanks as always for your channel :)

    Der Amerikaner
Edgar Allan Poe war viel besser! Und : die Amerikanische Autorin Gillian Flynn ist meilenweit besser!!!!!!!!!!!!!

While I thoroughly enjoyed "Losing You," "Blue Monday" made me pretty uncomfortable. Josef was a cringeworthy character. His being a Ukrainian immigrant is the punchline. As someone with roots in Ukraine, I didn't appreciate that.
The depictions of therapy were also pretty awful. Frieda is supposed to be somewhat morally ambiguous in that sense, but I found it hard to root for her when all I wanted to do was take away her license to practice.

    • @jenvcampbell
      @jenvcampbell  3 роки тому

I would agree that a lot of the characters feel two dimensional in the first book (Chloe’s manipulative behaviour, too), but over the course of eight books everyone is explored in detail. Agree it’s hard to root for Frieda sometimes… but that’s kind of why I love her, ha.

It’s also interesting because I’m sure there must be a difference between the written books and the audiobooks, especially when it comes to tone etc. I haven’t actually read the Frieda books in physical form yet, only in audio, which I think makes the characters feel more alive, too x

Great video. I LOVED Blue Monday but I lost steam after reading Tues, Wed, Thursday and Friday. After watching this video I went onto Libby and took out the next one.. the next day I listened to Sunday on Audible and then finished the last one today. Thank you for inspiring me to finish this series! I really enjoyed the last three books ❤️
