As impressive as Rift Apart was, I fear Ratchet and Clank will never return to what it once was. This game had everything, the atmsophere, the personality, the world-building, it was all there. So far ahead of its time.
I feel like the newer games completely miss the style the old games had. The newer games seem to go for a more "futuristic cyberpunk" aesthetic, with a more cinematic approach, while the older games had a more "retro/steampunk, mechanical element" to them, and completely made fun of the corporate world the universe infatuated itself with. It's almost as if the newer games became what the older games made fun of.
I like to compare Ratchet to Kingdom Hearts. It started with a very certain energy, a specific mojo and theming that quickly changed into what the series's identity would TRULY be. Kingdom Hearts 2 and Tools of Destruction firmly cemented what these franchises truly were, leaving those earlier entries and their unique tones and themes as beautiful anomalies. Seeing as I quite like both Kingdom Hearts and Ratchet for what they've become and are defined as as franchises, I am NOT complaining- rather, I just appreciate KH1's charming Disney magic and RaC 1's cynical steampunk anti-overcapitalist aesthetic for the special unique experiences they breed, keeping these more outdated entries on the same level overall as the games that followed.
Music makes all the difference. The new games would have felt amazing with this music. Such a shame that the new composer doesnt have the skill that Dave had, or Copeland for that matter.
Insomniacs new Composer like wtf, no wonder you cant emulate the original soundtracks on new games if you dont even attempt to respect the original work when given the opportunity to.
Ratchet: "Hey you're that robot guy, right?" Al: "No, I build robots. I, myself, am not a robot guy, per se. Ehehehehe." Ratchet: "Nerd." Clank: "I like him." And here we find Big Al. Such a dork but easily became one of my favorite characters in the series.
One thing that makes me appreciate this soundtrack even more is the fact that Ratchet had never seen any planet other than veldin before the game starts, so all the wonder and curiosity these tracks evoke in the player are probably the same feelings ratchet felt.
You are mostly correct, but Ratchet has indeed been to another planet before Veldin, he was an infant on Fastoon and then he got sent to Veldin by Kaiden.
Ratchet & Clank felt like a game beyond its years in terms of gameplay, map design, story and not to forget some of the most incredible soundtracks. I'll never forget how excited I felt to own my first Ps2 home video game console when I first saw this game and had the privilege to play as a kid walking past a PS2 at a Toys "R" Us. One of my very first games and one of the best single player games I've played, hands down.
Can we all agree that this is the Song that completely defines the Rachet and Clank series as a whole? I literally look forward to this song in newer games and tho they dont always hit the same...they put a smile on my face and take me way back to the early PS2 days of games...the BEST days of gaming which includes the gamecube and the first Halo
First game I ever played, was 2 years old at the time, remember every single bit of this game even at such a young age, man, the memories, and to this day I own every single R&C Game there is
I had completely forgotten about this level. I played the first Ratchet and Clank when I was a little kid and I only remembered a little bit of it, mostly just the Veldin intro level and the Novalis level, and a little bit of Aridia. Somehow I'd totally lost memory of Kerwan. When I played this game again in my early 20's, hearing this theme and seeing Metropolis and remembering "Oh SHIT this level!" was such an experience.
I played R&C 1 before I played the second or third games, but I was so young that I didn't really remember it. I have very vivid memories of playing Going Commando and Up Your Arsenal, but I had essentially forgotten everything about the first game. Over a decade later, when I was in community college, I decided to finally reply the original game. Landing on Kerwan, watching that walkup animation, and hearing this theme play with Metropolis in front of me caused such an intense emotional reaction because I suddenly remembered everything.
The first R&C is the best by a longshot. The sequels are fine enough, I've seen worse futures for franchises, but the original had originality, personality and very well tuned progression. You start with a wrench and slowly work your way up. You get the satisfaction of finding loot as if you were playing Diablo or Borderlands, but enjoy platforming the likes of Mario or Crash Bandicoot along the way: only better. In a way it reminds of me Half Life in that regard. Every new item is both fun and a necessary new tool. The completeness of this game is an underappreciated masterpiece.
I get that but I believe R&C3 was better in terms of progression or at least weapon progression as there were more than one proper ways of grinding bolts that didn’t take too long to get the next big gun (sewer crystals debatable tho) compared to the 1st, especially when you’d also spend quite a lot of bolts just on ammo
I used to sit in front of my tv and stare at the screen for hours playing this masterpiece. This song is buried into my subconscious, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
