  • In this video I do a quick overview of the FANUC PPR portable paper tape punch and reader. I then open it up to show the punch mechanism. This machine reads and punches 1" 8 bit tape. It speaks RS232, with default settings when all DIP switches are removed of 4800 8N1.
There is a neat slow mo of the mechanism at the end of the video. I hope you find this video informative!
This device is model number A13B-0117-B001. I believe it also has B002 and B003 versions that exist.
Software to work with papertape and send and receive over RS232 can be found at gitlab.com/NF6...

You are welcome! That is exactly why I made this video :) If you need a new punch pin please reach out as someone in the classic computers community is manufacturing some!

@@happycomputerguy Glad to see someone still making repalcement parts (especially for something that wears out so fast). The vintage electronics community is great.

    Very cool!
I'm wondering if there is an easy way to mod fanuc tape reader units from CNC machines to talk to vintage computers via RS232 or parallel port?

Hey, sorry to bug you. I jumped the gun on one of these. I've fixed the printing mecanism but the reader is acting rather odd. It'll read a for about 2 feet and then stop and the AL light will go red. I think it has something to do with the dip pins. Can I ask what you've configured your pins as?

Remove all dip switches and the settings are 4800 8N1.

      @@happycomputerguy what does 8n1 mean?

8 bits, no parity, 1 stop bit. A lot of the dip switches are to set up error checking which only applies to certain types of tapes, so removing them all means no checks are being performed.

@@happycomputerguy ok, thank you. Seems to be working good. Whoever was the last owner got their moneys worth out of it, there's metal shaving all over the insides (a shorts worst nightmare)
