- Nearly three decades after a Houston mother of three was murdered, her killer is scheduled for execution on Wednesday.
Arthur Burton was convicted of the 1997 murder of Nancy Adleman while she was jogging near her home.
“She went jogging along the (White Oak) bayou. Normally she would jog with her husband, this time she went jogging alone,” said Josh Reiss, a prosecutor with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office. “She went jogging alone so she could rehearse the lines of her one-woman play that she was going to perform at her local church.”
On July 29, 1997, Burton saw Adleman jogging along the bayou, ran up behind her and dragged her into a wooded area. Burton tried to sexually assault Adleman, but said he got too “nervous.” Burton then strangled her with a shoelace. Burton was arrested after residents in the area recognized a sketch of the attacker circulated by police. Burton lived near the location Adleman was murdered.
30 years is far too long for her family to wait for the final hammer of justice. No one deserves to be faced with such unprovoked violence and evil.

I am a sketch artist, and Lois Gibson, who did the sketch for this case, is my mentor. Her sketches are RIGHT ON. And DNA testing was available back then. And he's no smart criminal. So, he's been around a lot longer than he deserved.

Please stay away from remote areas when jogging. Go to a gym and job around an indoor track. Or jog along a street with a lot of businesses. Do not even jog along a street or road that is just full of houses. Someone inside a house or parked car may be watching you. Back in graduate school I used to job along a long road near a big cemetery. That road eventually led down to the banks of a river. Directly across on the other side of the river was an area where you could rent canoes and paddle boats. People often stood on that side feeding ducks. And there were bathrooms and a play area for children. One day, a friend came along with me just for fun. When she saw my route, she said it reminded her of what she had read about the Green River killer. I had had a false sense of security because I felt I was jogging along a road with homes and across the river were people on the other side. But on the side where I ended my jog and turned back to go home there was nothing and no one. Anybody could have grabbed me back there. Once she said that about the Green River killer, she spooked me, and I never went jogging like that again. I jogged instead inside on the college's gym track.
i’m glad her families got closure but women be safe. Know your surroundings at all times don’t jog along. Don’t go at night by treadmill and do it in the house cause you can’t go nowhere. People are evil in this world safety just buy you equipment and do everything in your apartment or your house keep your doors locked, have your food ordered from the grocery store and delivered it to your house get a PO Box to put your mail and packages in because people are going up stealing your packages off the doorstep. It took 30 yrs probably because they are entitled to appeals, if it was faster, the innocent people would die too.. Also depending on I think it's called the head of state sorry I live in Canada.. The head of the state may not favor the death penalty so he/she will not sign off on any executions while they're in charge.. I think if someone has committed the crime and they have admitted it and there is a lot of evidence supporting the fact they did it, I think they should be done with faster.. But it is very scary to think about how many innocent people have died because they were only on death row for ten yrs..
