Every one of these stores- we’re a big part of my childhood!! We had Sears, Mongomery Wards, JC Penny, Woolworth’s, Zayer- here in the Midwest is where we did all of our shopping!! Getting the Sears Wishbook catalog at Christmas as a kids was the best!!😍😍😍
WOOLWORTH is technically still in business. WOOLWORTH had a shoe section, that was fairly popular. When WOOLWORTH went out of business, they kept the shoe store running. That shoe store is Foot Locker.
OMG!!me too I’m 46 and back in the 80s my mom used to get my Halloween costumes and my easter outfits from there religiously… they always had the whole sets😂😂😂😂
I really enjoyed watching this video. It popped up on my top page, and brought back so many shopping memories. It really brought back the saying"the good ole days". They really were days when the world had less problems, and so much more enjoyment of shopping. So many good times in those days.
This brought back great memories of years of wonderful shopping experiences, especially at Rich’s. I don’t think big retailers edging out smaller chains or the convenience of online shopping is all that has killed the department store attraction. Back when many of these stores were in business, most people still knew how to act in public. They were civil and considerate of other people. They didn’t speak loudly (either in person or on a cell phone). They didn’t wear a their pajamas to the store. They didn’t bring the dog to the store and claim it was a “service animal.” They didn’t allow their children to act like demonic monkeys. They didn’t feel shoplift constantly and drive up prices. Plus, on the store side of the equation, they hired sufficient employees to help you and people were expected to provide good customer service (it was unthinkable that they would be on a personal call while at work). It was actually a fun, pleasant experience, not at all like today. What has happened to our society?
I'M A 63 Y.OLD MAN AND THIS WAS FASCINATING TO ME. MY DAD WOULD TAKE ME AND GET TOOLS AND PARTS FOR BROKEN APPLIANCES STOVES, WASHING MACHINES ECT. SEARS FILLED THE TOYS UNDER OUR CHRISTMAS TREE.
Some people should check the thumbnails, if theyre afraid theyre too young or too sophisticated for things of times gone by.... that some of us remember with great fondness.
I remember that Sears outdoor department had barbie size tents set up on top of the shelves to show what the tents looked like. I wanted one so badly for my barbies! I also remember cutting out the drawn pictures of people in the old Sears cataloges in my grandma's basement for paperdolls, before they used pictures of real people to model their clothes. Oh, how I wish she had held onto all those old cataloges, now, instead!
Sears is thriving in Mexico they actually carry designer brands and Kmart in Australia is boomin 🤑 (also woolworths but pretty sure it’s not the same company)
My mom still has a cross she bought from Marshall Field’s in Chicago from back in the day. Pretty cool lol. Didn’t know about so many of these places though wow.
I'm from Boston. I was surprised they didn't filenes. They had that awesome basement s tore downstairs where you could get some great buys. Macy's took them out I think and Jordan Marsh went down too. Jordans building on Washington St is a Macy's now. Filenes spot now is a big skyscraper now. That's progress for you
Filene's Basement! I've been on many shopping trips with my mom, grandma & and aunt back in the 60s & 70s. They used to have elevator operators, bathroom attendants & pay toilets , 10 cents a go. lol
Wow I remember those West coast stores, I used to shop at Woolworth, Chubby and Tubby, and I used to work for Kmart and the Bon Marche many moons ago. Fredrick and Nelson was the store for their delicious Frango mint chocolate candy that you find in an array of different flavors at Macy's. Anyone from Seattle, did you ever shop at Jay Jacob's retail store in the mid eighties?. Thanks for this classic gem.
I miss the Dime Stores & the Sears catalog which was something that we waited for with much anticipation, especially the Christmas edition was pure joy in finally arrived the mail box.
I'm in my 40s and this was wonderful to watch and remember my childhood. This is the first time I've ever heard of Stuckeys. I was nice to learn a new place as well

People get all nostalgic about these many stores going out of business, but we the people had the power to keep them in business- simply by shopping there. 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
Good vid. Macy's takeover of Marshall Field's did indeed cause an uproar. My family wrote letters and protested this move. However to Macy's credit, they retain the Marshall Field's plaques at all the entrances and the classic Walnut Room still serves wonderful meals.
Monkey Wards was the absolute best! Zayre was cool, Woolworth's lunch counter hit the spot, but Wags was better! (Wags was Woolworth's stand alone restaurant. I have sime great family memories at iur local Wag's!!"
I'm pretty sure it was a typo, but monkey wards is more accurate than you know. Earlier this year we went to visit my grandpa at his retirement home, and there was this lady that just randomly told us that she/her family bought a monkey from Montgomery wards. Like I said, that typo is more accurate than you know lmao
Wow, 4+ hours, and you left out many, including Alexanders, TSS, Mays, and M H Lamstons (I actually worked there as a teenager), lol. just to name a few.
Well I'm going to tell you something the retails of today. They're doing away with a lot of associates, they're doing with they're doing self check outs and a lot of customers don't like that plus on the floor there's hardly no help Walmart jams, they're getting to that point where. A customer could ask for help and they're not getting the help they need. So the members really don't like that so they better step up their game, because that will happen to those stores that sooner or later, they were all shut down if they don't have customer service and get it right? Because people do need to be guided to or answer the questions they need for any help. They need on the floor well, God bless, and thank you for all those wonderful stores. Those wonderful memories that we had from all those great stores. I still order sell my stuff from online with Montgomery awards. I do miss k mark. I God bless you all. Thank you
I live in the Northwest and I've never heard of Gottschalk's. 🤷🏻♂️ I still get angry when I think of the loss of Montgomery Ward, Sears, Emporium (specifically in the Pacific Northwest), Bon Marché, and Meier & Frank. Just say "they were the victim of Macy's/Walmart. Seriously, most of these follow the same model: starting as local powerhouses only to be destroyed by the nationwide corporation juggernauts. 🤬
They both still have an online store, and I think there are still several Sears in the US. Maybe he just doesn't understand what the word forgotten means.
I always said Eddie Lampert was thinking of his own wealth and not Sears or the people working for Sears. I feel single-handedly he destroyed the brand the store and the dignity of its workers. No I never worked for Sears.
I had to fast forward over the A&P segment because it was redundant and had way too many analogies. I didn’t need him to explain every aspect with an example🤣 Other than that, I enjoyed the walk down memory lane even though it made me rather sad. I did still support these stores in my area so I didn’t contribute to their downfall.
Dude what's with all the analogies. They are literally one every paragraph. It was like watching 232 parking lots emptying for the last time. Their troubles were like a mirror reflecting the massive changes......was it time to whether the storm or turn out the lights for good. The final blow came in the form of 242 analogies and we're acquired for 232 rupples
They would still be with us if the management higher up was smarter in how they invested the funds and not get greedy and take risks- yep, all those stores or companies went bankrupt because of the stocks and management poor decisions
Okay holy crap I did NOT know that there were this many stores that went out of business, wow lol. Super unfortunate, I wouldn’t be surprised if Walmart and Target stores shared the same fate one day.. 🥲
