  • So now we actually need to destroy the spaceship. The best unit to use is anti-air, although it takes a little thought to figure out how to do it. Recall that the spaceship is really tanky (for reference, a regular anti-air does 10% to it), it can counterattack at 1 range (65% against anti-air), and that you're fighting Supreme Sonja so it counterattacks first.
    This is where the stupid part happens. Counter Calamity turns off all of Supreme Sonja's D2D abilities, including her first strike counterattacks. Thus, the goal is to charge Sonja's SCOP as quickly as possible and then ram all of your anti-air into the spaceship since they'll all die and clear the way because of the increased counter damage.
    This mission is Flak's time to shine, since his reworked higher luck (0%-29%) means you only need four anti-air instead of six. I needed Adder's increased movement for one attack, and Jess is the easiest to get power with. The margins are pretty tight; I charged Sonja's SCOP with I believe less than 1000G to spare, and you need to roll 71 out of 76 luck across your four anti-air attacks.
    Sonja's day 1 battle copter should move 4 south, 1 west (AI 3), her day 2 tank and Md tank should both move full south (AI 1, 4), both of her day 3 artillery must not stay in the middle (AI 2, 3, 5), and her day 4 fighter must not move south if built in her bottom-left airport (not AI 3).

    That long, quiet pause after HYPER UPGRADE! with Andy all ":D" the whole time was way funnier than it had any right to be.

    Very cool 7 turn clear. Using Counter Calamity to destroy your AA to keep the tile below the spaceship open so more AA can attack was smart, and the fact that Sonja just barely got SCOP in time was neat.

    Now that's a CO lineup I have NEVER seen on this map before, hahaha.
    Man, that was a great job. Bunch of anti-airs, huh. The intention was that they'd be as weakest to Missiles, but with Flak's luck, who cares, hahahaha. Anti-Airs sure is the absolute fastest, yeah. Flak's time to shine, huh. That is hilarious. Oh, wow, I actually get to see if Jess' win dialogue looks okay. Eeeeeh... I probably could have written something better, but eh, it works nicely enough. Well done!
    This trip has been glorious. To see how the maps I so painstakingly playtested can be picked apart with maximum AI-manipulation for the absolutely shortest perfect clears. It has been an absolute delight to see. Thank you so much for picking my hack to do this series on and then uploading it so I and everyone else could watch it. I feel quite honored and happy. Thank you! :D
    It's called Advance Wars Story because I'm properly proud of the story I wrote. Now, what I'm the most proud of is that it's a complete hack that's made an impact on the community, but if it's just between the story and the maps I am more proud of the story than I am the maps (albeit I am still proud of the maps). I wrote the story first, the maps I came up with after. :P

      Well consider that this rom already got a tvtropes page on it's own, I'd say it's definitely made an impact for sure.

    Flak and Hawke still have their black text boxes, but Adder got a yellow one. Nice touch.

    All in all, good romhack, interesting units, decently original and challenging missions, appreciate you left the dialogue in even though the story is quite... meh.
    And as always, I am incredibly impressed with your technical prowess. Thank you for the showcase series, I'll probably be playing this at some point!

    Thank you for doing these, it was fun to see them play out. I have to agree with some of the other comments, the story had problems, but there were some moments that did work really well, and I have a lot of respect for all the work it must have taken to make it in the first place.

    I can't reallly comment on the gameplay due to the nature of the playthrough, but that one Sami mission where you captured a bunch of properties at once was funny.
    The story feels really out of character for a lot of COs especially considered everyone just...forgives her in the end (despite a lot of soldiers dying in the process) really reminds you why these games dont have a strong story focus.
    Long cutscenes of dialogue look really jarring when its just a character icon and textboxes with no real context (CGs, map sprites, battle scenes, etc) to contextualize them. Sonja's icon actually showing the green lines works though.

      In my head, war crimes are a bit less severe in the world of Advance Wars (well, minus the Sensei incident), so it's fine, because it's in here. I also think it fits Advance Wars better. They have no trouble forgiving Hawke and Lash in DS, so why not, really. It feels so much better when everyone's happy in the end.

    I think the best picks would be Grit, Max and Eagle. It’s best to get Supreme Sonja to use her Super CO Power. That way you can actually damage the spaceship, even though attacking it directly will destroy your own units in the process. Grit can open up with his normal or super CO power, using Missiles to damage it from a safe distance, then Max follows up with his normal or super CO power, using his anti airs and fighters, then Eagle does what he can with his anti airs and fighters, bringing the rest of his air attacking units close to the spaceship, using his super CO power to move them again, then finishing off the spaceship. In the CO select roster, Flak will be in Orange Star, Adder will be in Yellow Comet, and Hawke will be in Green Earth. The only COs you can’t pick here are Nell, Lash, Sturm and Sonja herself.

      Didn't AI loves to destroy something like Rockets and Missiles in first priority? I think it would be difficult to rush with them to the ship with Grit.

    So that's why Counter Calmity is the SCO, not the COP. (I thought they were backward!)
    You have to actually intentionally force SCOs out of her (not COPs) to win.

    Well... I said too many times. But this romhack has really nice challenges... BUT... I have ABSOLUTELY NO idea, why guys on forum praising it's writing or why this hack even promotes itself as story to give you better sense of closure.
    Like yeah, we definitely needed those "love stories", "somehow Sturm survived"*5, plot twists with Sonja as main villain to give us a sense of complete story and true character development.
    I wonder if those same people from forum liked Days of Ruin story or not.

      Tbf, the bar is...kinda low in Advance Wars case. Days of Ruin was the only one that took itself seriously and to do that IntSys had to completely rework the entire series.
      1 has some intrigue on the side, but still has some goofy moments of Drake stalling for time even though he knows Orange Star aren't the culprits
      2 is more cohesive since there's a definite enemy in black hole who is entirely evil
      Dual Strike needed to handwave those friendly CO battles a bit better or just remove them (im pretty sure they're just there so you aren't fighting the same few COs like AW2 again) since their occuring while the black hole/bolt guard war is happening.
      Best course of action for a story imo is just practice drills during peacetime.

      Well, there are two love-stories that needed closure and could not be ignored. Grit/Nell/Max and Eagle/Sami. Both of those are in AW1 and were never concluded. The ones I added after that... yeah, perhaps they weren't needed. But I stand by my choices. The whole Sonja plot was to ensure that the Mirror Darkly plot actually led somewhere.
      I didn't just bring Sturm back, I made sure to do something interesting with him. Like introduce that he's been a threat for longer than we realize (Unseen Conflict), allow Hawke to confront his past through him (Confronting Enigma) and finally introduce the fact he truly came from space and had Sonja and Lash steal his spaceship (Like Sisters) and then finally having him leave the planet in the final map. Which I find to be WAY more interesting than just leaving him for dead. I honestly think killing him at the end of AW2 was a huge mistake and the single most un-Advance Wars like thing in the first three games. So I made it not stick. And also, he's not the final villain. That would have been way less interesting.

      I think the praises come from the game picking up a lot of the old plot threads and bringing closure to them. They feel a little hammy in some respects (and perhaps with a lot of awkward mood swings, like Sensei suddenly being out for Sonja's blood), but the author does well in his portrayals of the COs, regardless.
