Italians have always worked hard in a any country they went to. They never asked the government to support them. They went to work the following day they arrived and always fended for their family. I am Canadian Italian and am proud.
Now this is why I am proud to be of Italian origin. We arrived here is 1955 when I was 4 years old, now 63, the day later my dad (now passed), had a jackhammer in his hand, helping build the Queen Elizabeth hospital in Adelaide. No Centerlink handouts like now then, he had to work hard to support his family.
This was a beautiful story that is all to common amongst the Italians. It tells of the fight to succeed in life no matter what. I am very proud of my Italian heritage and what my parents achieved to enable my brother and I to have a good life. I am 64yo now and my dad passed away many years ago but I miss him daily. Mum is 90yo but she keeps on fighting. Thank u for this lovely story that has now stirred up emotions within.
My mom was born Italy and moved to Australia in 1950 just bearly a year old. My dad was born in Hong Kong and moved to Perth in 1972. I miss my Nonna who died aged 99 in 2013. I never got to see my Nonno he died a year before I was born. Italians contributed to Australia success.
This is one of thousands such amazing stories of resilience, hope, vision and above all strength. Viva l'italiani who made the brave voyage to a distant land far from their loved ones to create a new home. These stories should not be forgotten, but remembered and respected. Thank you for creating this touching video and sharing the passion of your family and others who took similar steps. I am proud to say my family was one of them.
I'm of Italian background living in Melbourne. In Germany Italians were recognized as Model citizens. There is a true story of an Italian immigrant that moved to Germany post WW2, he set up a Pizza restaurant which was made famous by rock stars. However the real heart felt story is that Germany post WW2 experienced inflation. Food was very expensive to purchase, but the restauranteur thanked Germans and Germany by giving back what Germans gave to him. He sold pizza slices for something like 50 cents or $1. This was at a time they could not afford to feed themselves completely. The restauranteur became an urban legend. His name is in German history books. Give a man a job, make him happy and it will have a knock on effect. My respect to Italians and Germans everywhere! (Revised and edited December 2019)
I stumbled across this video by accident. It was very difficult to watch without shedding a tear. So many of us have parents and grandparents who sacrificed everything for a better life in this country, and they brought so much good with them. Thanks so much for making this beautiful video that shows what a wonderful contribution immigrants (not only those from Italy) have made to enrich this country.
This just beautiful. My dad came out in 1951 and my mum in 1959. Beautifully done. It brought me to tears. Bellissimo. Mi ha fatto piangere. Così commovente. Mi rende orgoglioso avere un patrimonio italiano e anche essere australiano.. It brought me to tears. So moving. It makes me proud to have an Italian heritage and to also be an Australian.
Absolutely fantastic....never, ever, ever take this off UA-cam, please!! This is the story of all Italian Australian migrants.....simply spectacular video. Thank you!!!
Hi Adam Thank you for such a lovely story. You've inspired me to put together something like this about my family. My father owned the Carlton Milk Bar in Lygon street so i worked there in the 70's then in Toto's Pizza in the 80's. Now i'm thinking of writing something and your beautiful tribute was a good first stop for me.
Christine Huang Thanks Christine, definitely a good way of capturing a story. You should certainly write something you won't regret it and your family will appreciate it also. All the best!
What a truly beautiful and poignant story you told in pictures. Thank you, and thank you to your family for arriving here and overcoming the initial struggle.
I would love to honour my father, Duilio Magurno, who in 1952 travelled from a tiny village called Futani in Southern Italy to come, by assisted passage, to a beautiful country called Australia. He was so thankful to come to this country that gave him riches that he had only dreamed about; employment, security to marry and raise a family, and a peaceful lifestyle. He made us proud to be Australians and be thankful to this beautiful land. We love you Dad and miss you so much xx
That is a beautiful message. We all have a lot to be appreciative and grateful for. Your father sounds like a wonderful person and would be looking down very proud of his legacy and family i'm sure.
What a beautiful story we italians can relate to and what they have done for Australia. At the time we never knew or listened when they spoke of sacrifices, but now we know. Thanks for the memories. Cheers to your beautiful family.
Hey cicc, just watched the video, put tears in my eyes. Two of my Nonni are still with me, but they're getting old. I feel such a connection to our forefather's who made this all possible for us, it is their legacy, and for them that we should all do our best because they sacrificed so much so that we could. Beautiful stuff, buona pasqua, im off to Nonna's now in Oakleigh. Thanks.
What a lovely film. It brought tears to my eyes. My parents, like yours, worked bloody hard to stand on their feet in Australia but were proud to call themselves "New Australians". They worked hard to give me a better life. When I was a little kid I didn't understand their sacrifices but as I grew older I finally realised what they had done and what they had given up for me and my siblings. Now they are part of the soil of their new homeland. Me, I love Australia with every part of my being but I also carry the love of life of all Italians within me. Thank you again.
Thank you for your kind words! Your words are very true, especially the part about appreciating their sacrifices as we get older and understand just how difficult it would have been for them. Thanks again for your comment :)
... moving; I am just few years in Australia, but it was my dream for all my life. I fel like your Bisnonno, I know that because of my actions today 9and my choices and my sacrifices) my descendant will have a better life and live in the very best country on the Planet. Thanks to family like yours (and from many other ethnicity of course) today Australia is the Paradise that we all enjoy. Thank you for putting together this video and thanks to your Grand Father and Bisnonno for making Australia the great place it is today. Thanks! Grazie !
Thank you for this amazing digital narrative that has evoked many emotions and memories for me. My family history is very much the same as yours and the blessings and richness that I have received from their adventurous journey to this great land will never be forgotten. Grazie
It was some time ago that I originally saw this video. You've done a great job. It's put together very well, and it will always remain a beautiful tribute to your grandparents and your family. Nicely done. :-)
BRAVO, thank-you for the heart touching video of your family, we are children of Italian backgrounds our blood runs thick & strong, never to forget our Ancestors where we came from, my story is so much like yours. We are who we are today. Ciao Amico
What a beautiful video you have created. Your family would be very proud of you. My father, together with his father and a brother, made the same journey and worked tirelessly before bringing out the rest of their family. So many sacrifices they made back then for a better life! We have a lot to live up to!
Lovely. Or should I say bellissimo! My great great grandfather and great grandfather and his brothers all came to Australia in the 1850's for the gold rush to escape the hard times in Cevio. They ended up staying and thriving. I'm sure they encountered hard times and possibly/probably racism but then again so did my Irish and British ancestors. And they all probably gave it back in kind to those with Chinese heritage and other backgrounds. The beauty of this place called Australia, is that so far we have all bumped up against each other, got the odd bruise or two but we keep evolving and absorbing different cultures and hopefully keep the best and discard the rest! Are we perfect? Far from it - but it's a pretty interesting place to live.
Thanks for your comment, much appreciated. Hope you had an amazing Easter with your family and i veccchi reminded you of how fortunate we are! All the best, buona pasqua!
And I'm still here! Build up a lovely family.thanks to your: well! Not so much!Seen how Aboriginals been treated since Cook! But!You are a lovely soul. And I'm thanking you for your comment!
Beautifully told, thankyou for sharing.I married an Italian born Australian, he and his family are so precious to me. I recognize these things in your story.
I really enjoyed this thank you for sharing. Im Australian born to Sicilian parents who migrated here in late 1950s and the strangest thing is I have a longing to live in Italy my Italian roots are strong even though I was born in Australia and my parents never went back they become Australian citizens and were thankful for the new found home, work , culture and friends.

Maria D Thanks so much for your comment. Glad you appreciate all the effort and sacrifices our parents and grandparents made for us. Hope we can keep their memories alive.
I loved this. Very similar to my family history. My great grandparents migrated here before ww2. They came to stanthorpe qld and some family are up near cairns and own sugarcane farms. Thanks to them i live the life i lead now.
Awesome video mate. My nonno did the same thing. Came on his own and bought my nonna over after he found stable work. Built the house they still live in today.
Thanks mate much appreciated. Glad I could somewhat tell their story and have others resonate with it. They were and are incredible people we should forever be indebted to.
I'm many generations Australian, of Irish and Welsh background, regardless of that, I have never been included in a family, as a result, I have spent my life alone. I see many families gathering together in parks and at festive times of the year, and it does make me wish I'd been a part of something similar, that I actually belonged to someone or something, but those are the breaks I guess.. You're a lucky man, you have love, affection, and are part of a real family of good quality people.
This is our story too the names have been changed but the story is the same. I see my Grandparents I see my Uncles and Aunties. Thank you for sharing this beautifull short history of our family our Italian family I did not know how lucky i was when growing up in Bondi going to big very Big Italian weddings sometimes 3 in a month because we had repect for other Italians We were the lucky people THE GREATEST LOTTERY YOU CAN WIN IS THE COUNTRY YOU ARE BORN IN AND THE FAMILY THAT YOU ARE BORN INTO
That is such a moving and touching video. I can so relate to everything you've 'said' in this vid. Your parents should be proud of you, what an amazingly talented story-teller you are. Thanks for sharing. I'm going to share now..
A fantastic story ... My in-laws are Greek and they too have made the same journey and sacrifices ... My husband is just like you ... free to live out his dreams because his parents/grandparents left a tiny island of Greece in search of greater opportunities ... Very good choice of music to express the emotions of your family and their communities' journey ... Thank you ... I am a school teacher and will be introducing to the children how Australia has become such a diverse country due to our migrant heritage - your story is a fantastic expression of how the Italian community has brought so much to our country and how we as Australians now very much appreciate and long to taste and own Italian made produce and fashion ... Thank you ...
Such a beautiful composition which had me teary. Myself of Italian parents who spent time at Bonegilla, I am soon to visit the place - so this provided a touching insight to that time :) .... Grazie mille ..........
This story is amazing!! i'm italin too, im doing a assignment on migration and i was going to do the migration of my nonno and nonna. I think that this will be great help!! Love the story!!
According to the Italian government, there are 31 million Brazilians of Italian descent. Brazil is home to 30 millions Argentina 20 millions United States 17.800 millions
Italians had problems in Australia,America, Brazil Switzerland and obviously in Germany . Their salary were too low. They had considered after Africans worker. Im proud of them. they made our Italy spreading our culture in whole world.
Great Homage to our Parents and Grandparents. My Parents came out in 1951 and 1952. Some of the people in your tribute are well known to my parents as we lived in Carlton for many years - in the 50's and 60's. If you haven't already seen it, take a look at the video we put up called Italian Life in Melbourne - early 1960's. It was set in our back yard. Funny watching the guys trying their hand at cricket - with little luck !!!! But how simple and how great was it !!!
Hey Frank... Just came across your video.... Amazing! So many familiar faces!!! Lovely to see.. Brought tears to my eyes seeing us all in simpler times... Saluting e baci Loretta Bendoricchio ❤️🇮🇹❤️🇮🇹❤️
Loretta Swan Grazie Loretta. It was a more simple time when people like our parents enjoyed being together. Your mum and dad were so close to mine. Your mum always saw my mum as an older sister and my mum loved yours. It is a great video. Saluti
+Frank Gonano .... Yes definitely Frank... The video is priceless!! Yes our parents were extremely close... My mum adored your mum... You must miss her... Are you on face book? If you are, I am too... I'm on as Loretta Swan!!! Varda che nome stupido che ho addesso !!!! Love to the family xxxxx
I do miss her terribly Loretta. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think of her. I am not on facebook sorry. If you look closely at the video you should see a young Marisa Bottari. Cannot believe some of the comments from a certain bloke who is questioning our heritage and asking if any of us can speak Italian !!!! Cretino
Happen to come across your video - very nicely done. I grew up in Little Italy (Montreal, Canada), but your story resonates, as I'm sure it does for all Italians around the world....and.. by the way.. Canada is the best country in the world (lol). Seriously, if I wasn't such a proud Canadian, I would have chosen Australia! Ciao.
Thanks ARC. Canada certainly is a beautiful place! We are all a little biased no doubt but we both have a lot to be proud of with the countries in which we reside. Thanks for watching!
Seen this presentation all i can say is favorevoli Comments to the young man who put this together. . I got here at station pier in FEB. 1956 the Sydney liner .17 at the time . got to work the fallowing day. did not know I was suffering deep depression; away from my loving mom that I never got to see Her again. all alone was I. But strong minded and reasonable healthy I go through and cause I get Emotional to see these clips thank you Man. you done a great Job.
***** thank you Dennis. time have changed a lot in my 59 years here and after this much time a go by the Australian way .because I helped make it what it is today. I don't feel discriminated at all. we must not take what others think of us, that's their problem. if one done good; must feel good. if not! Well ! . . .
Andrew Petruzzelli , my mother and zia landed in 1956, Station Pier, via the Sydney. They have fond memories of the people they met and their time on the ship. My mother Antonina and zia Lucia never forgot where they cme from either.
Grazie per le immagini e la musica, che ricordano a tutti noi in Italia, gli italiani che sono dovuti andar via da casa loro, penso che con loro l' Australia sia diventata ancora più bella....
Fantastic , footage. Really touched my heart. I thank God for a great country . But my heart goes out the The woman that come to this foreign country in the 50s,60s, and 70s from Southern Europe . They were ostracised by society, far away from there families , but have made this country what it is.
I'm still crying, you can't imagine how much I love you. I've always said that you australians with italian origins are the best italians in the world. I must come back, I defenetly must come back, if only I had enough money another time, I would leave at this moment. To get another time on 96 until St. Kilda, to go to Victoria Markets, your Pizzas, your Flat White, my neverending dream called Melbourne, a city I love as I love mine. Kiss you all family, be proud of them. Vinicio from Rome.
Hi Adam - I'm running an event in Sydney to celebrate the role of Italians in Australia's history. I'd like to potentially utilise some of the footage you have here. Was trying to find a way of contacting you so thought I'd message here. Would that be ok?
this is so sad,, story to know that you left your family, I left some of my family in cape verde I feel so sad I miss them, but I am here to see if i can change my life to better life ,maybe one day I will help them }{
'But their sense of identity always stayed true' - that's the part that got me. This is why so many of us of Italian descent remember the old stories and traditions of our forefathers and foremothers (is that a word?😉) and continue to carry them forward today. Grazie bello for this video. Bravo
thank you for posting this it reminded me of our families struggle to be welcomed in a new world there were times that I went home crying with taunts as a child when they found out I was italian my mum used to send me to school with mortadela and salami sandwiches. I have he last laugh now I enjoy a great life.
My partners family is from italy sicily and they went to Australia and then came her to new Zealand his family is Maori Raro Italian/Sicilian 🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Brought tears to my eyes,my grandparents went to America when my parents were children. Our experience was similar. There was a time when me being called dago and wop was all to acceptable. Many of my fellow Italian Americans have forgotten that, they now are themselves siding with fascism and Trumpism.
For me thank you for australia is an accepting whole life of a country of italian refugees from victims of a Nazi Germany in world war two .I'm happy to a good relationship of a italy and australia good luck to a strong relationship between italy and australia.I'm a very happy and two countries is a ally of a most powerful country in the world United States of America
Italians had no choice. In post-war Italy you almost starved. Now, thankfully everything has changed. There is still animosity against the English and Americans. Rural areas refuse to converse in English. They were docile, willing slaves. Just what Australia needed.
You have left out the time reference that all this took place in. A bit more than that it was during or after the war would have been very informative. But heartfelt it is nonetheless. Thank you.
Hello, I am an Australian composer and last year I was commissioned to compose a work for a concert band based in Western Sydney. I grew up in Griffith NSW and have always been aware of the journey travelled my immigrants after the 2nd world war. My piece "Into the Sun" is based on the stories of various immigrants to Australia and recently, a band who is playing it in America found your UA-cam clip. They played your clip with a recording of my piece in the background and it almost perfectly matches up! I would like to link to it on my website - is that ok? See www.jodieblackshaw.com. Thank you :)

Natalie Farrell Thank you for your comment. We are very lucky for their sacrifices and glad I could tell a little of their story. Adam
Bob Book create what you are lacking. Stay strong.
I understand the missing! But be proud of yourself!Sometime very good friends! Will compensate the lack of family!Hope you did find them!
This is our story too the names have been changed but the story is the same. I see my Grandparents I see my Uncles and Aunties. Thank you for sharing this beautifull short history of our family our Italian family I did not know how lucky i was when growing up in Bondi going to big very Big Italian weddings sometimes 3 in a month because we had repect for other Italians We were the lucky people THE GREATEST LOTTERY YOU CAN WIN IS THE COUNTRY YOU ARE BORN IN AND THE FAMILY THAT YOU ARE BORN INTO
wonderful!! so very touching and true....my father would have loved this....
Thank you for your comment. Glad this video impacted and educated you somewhat. Thanks again. Adam

Hi, do you have any info on the date or name of the ship at 1:06 ? I think I see my mother there!! Great clip by the way.
According to the Italian government, there are 31 million Brazilians of Italian descent. Brazil is home to 30 millions
Argentina 20 millions
United States 17.800 millions
But in proportion of habitants, Uruguay have more Italian descendents than any country in the world.
This is beautiful. I myself am migrating to Australia from England next year. Thank you for sharing :)
Most of my family came to America in the 1880-1920. I did have some family that went to Australia. Think they both had the same struggles. Nice video.
Well done, it brought tears to my eyes.
Don't forget the music of Italian Australian composer Wando Aldrovandi at National Library and posted on youtube.
I just say because I'm italian and very soon I'll go away from italy. Now I'm an immigrant too.Very emotional video.
My aunt arrived in 1953 from Calabria, 30 day voyage.
Complimenti un documentario fatto con il cuore. E` stato bello vedere anche i tuoi genitori ( bella sorpresa)
Grazie per il messagio. Solo un piccolo cosa che io puo fare per i miei nonni.
I have shared this on many facebook groups including my facebook page. Regards to your parents from my mother, sister and myself. Famiglia Caporetto
Grazie per le immagini e la musica, che ricordano a tutti noi in Italia, gli italiani che sono dovuti andar via da casa loro, penso che con loro l' Australia sia diventata ancora più bella....
Complimenti. Bellissimo video!
Not many people know of the racism against Italians , and the fact that Italians were kept in Concentration Camps in AUSTRALIA
Wow! Thanks for sharing this video...even if I can't stop my tears now!! :)

Thanks Mario, appreciate the kind words and glad you enjoyed it. Adam
Italians are very good citizens.
LAZY DOG I would have to agree 😁
Italians added to the Australian culture.
Hi Adam - I'm running an event in Sydney to celebrate the role of Italians in Australia's history. I'd like to potentially utilise some of the footage you have here. Was trying to find a way of contacting you so thought I'd message here. Would that be ok?
Hi Nigel, no problem. All the best with your event!
I would like to use a similar idea for a shortened version for a school harmony day project.
this is so sad,,
story to know that you left your family, I left some of my family in cape verde I feel so sad I miss them, but I am here to see if i can change my life to better life ,maybe one day I will help them }{
Wow inspirational
I wish my mum and dad were still here to show them this clip they would be crying
God bless Australia
Mario Ripepi thank you so much for your comment. Happy to be able to tell just a small part of their story.
'But their sense of identity always stayed true' - that's the part that got me. This is why so many of us of Italian descent remember the old stories and traditions of our forefathers and foremothers (is that a word?😉) and continue to carry them forward today. Grazie bello for this video. Bravo
Great video, thank you
thank you for posting this it reminded me of our families struggle to be welcomed in a new world there were times that I went home crying with taunts as a child when they found out I was italian my mum used to send me to school with mortadela and salami sandwiches. I have he last laugh now I enjoy a great life.
Hi I'm from Italy. :)
GREAT VIDEO!!!
very nice
Bellissima storia...complimenti...
very good
tutto i mie rispetti (Chapeau )
My partners family is from italy sicily and they went to Australia and then came her to new Zealand his family is Maori Raro Italian/Sicilian 🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🇮🇹🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Brought tears to my eyes,my grandparents went to America when my parents were children. Our experience was similar. There was a time when me being called dago and wop was all to acceptable. Many of my fellow Italian Americans have forgotten that, they now are themselves siding with fascism and Trumpism.
Sempre Viva l'Italia e gli italiani onesti che hanno portato nel mondo la nostra cultura.
God bless!!!
love Italy, love Italian, love culture....
thank you for this video, nothing to go with me... I just want PEAS IN THIS WORLD!!!!!!!
Svetlana mougal . Don't we all. The true migrants have dignity. Those that are sent from hell don't care about the nobility of hard work.
Proud Italian 🇮🇹
Good, you should be! :)
Very similar to what happened in the U.S.
the kid in the middle at 5:35 made me think of Harry Potter
Kaylea Early May be a time traveler! :)
the music is so sad
For me thank you for australia is an accepting whole life of a country of italian refugees from victims of a Nazi Germany in world war two .I'm happy to a good relationship of a italy and australia good luck to a strong relationship between italy and australia.I'm a very happy and two countries is a ally of a most powerful country in the world United States of America
Ital opened the way for lebs
Italians had no choice. In post-war Italy you almost starved. Now, thankfully everything has changed. There is still animosity against the English and Americans. Rural areas refuse to converse in English. They were docile, willing slaves. Just what Australia needed.
Now the question: Will Australia accept me?
Great times, those immigrants made Australia what it is today, unfortunately Politicians Sold Us Out, their efforts were in vain now!!))
You are so right, we can be proud of our ancestors, their contribution to this country is enormous. Great tribute ,well done !
You have left out the time reference that all this took place in. A bit more than that it was during or after the war would have been very informative. But heartfelt it is nonetheless. Thank you.
pmcm 7317 Thanks for your comment. This took place around the 1940’s and 1950’s (post ww2 ).
Bene. Molto bene.
Thanks Nick, much appreciated. Adam
