I started riding motocross at the age of 3 in Germany. Never got hurt. Moved to Houston when I was 27 and rode Rio Bravo, after 2 month popped my finger when it was wet and I did a 180 turn on a straight, just a month later crash again in the sharp left turn in the very back left and fractured my shoulder and rips. Few month later crashed on the night track and broke my femur. I'm 30 now so just been living here for 3 years so far. I don't ride Rio Bravo anymore and really prefer 3 palms because I also prefer softer dirt well I'd even prefer sand because thats what I'm used to. But this video right here really made me like Rio Bravo a little more again and I definitely have respect and love these oldschool times. Awesome pictures. I wish it was videos.
I was there with my older brother and a neighborhood friend. I remember when we first arrived, needing to go to a store for Off Repellent. Too many mosquitos. Great memories.
Reminds me of my dad. He had a 77' YZ 400 when he last owned a bike. He decided he didn't want to get hurt anymore so he bought me a dirt bike instead, and it has been my passion for 25 years. Long live the 2 stroke!
BRAVO DAVID LACK !!! You have a gold mine of motocross memories and history!! BRAVO!! I love your albums! I post MX photos on facebook , some of the pros . But nothing is put together like your albums! the others are great as well! Thank you
My dad would take us to Rio Bravo almost every weekend after it opened in ... 1972? The memories... Wow!!! Thanks for posting this! I remember Bob Hannah learning his licks in his early days here, too! But my brother's friend rode for Kawasaki, so we rooted for him... wish I could remember his name.
@@charlesharper6421 Yea Wyman was awesome. I raced open class intermediate there in the late 70's. Wyman was fun to watch . I think he died at an early age from working iand breathing toxic chemicals at the Texas City Refinery.
I JUST RODE MY ELECTRIC DIRT BIKE AT RIO BRAVO TODAY, SO AWESOME!!! MY FAVORITE TRACK IN THE WHOLE WORLD !!! MISS YOU DANNY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My 1st 2 stroke was a 78 Yz80. I got it in 1983 I was 6 yrs old. Loved that thing even though it was a little hard to handle at 6. I learned the hard way ha,ha but that's when I became addicted to 2 strokes. 42 yrs old now and never owned anything other than.
That was great! Glad someone was taking photos back then. All I was doing every lap was saying ......"did you see that".Thanks for putting this together.
I love your ending picture. The kid on the rear wheel looks like he is riding a Honda Trail 70 with the stamped out frame and fold-able handlebars. That was the first bike I ever rode (on the back) of. The other kid is riding a street bike off road, and my own first bike was much like that, (Honda CL100), sans the blinkers, mirror, and head light due to new rider crashes. Man, that was a great era in the USA.
Close on the bike, that's my little brother on a Mini Trail 50 and me on a Honda CL175. Good times indeed! The CL175 was eventually stripped of all those items too and ridden offload only. I put it all back together eventually and we traded it for a Kawasaki Green Streak 100 for my brother and I moved on to a CZ250.
The revolution that changed everything about Motocross was Yamaha's innovation in their suspension. This was more important than going water cooled a few years later.
I raced here in the NMA Nationals in 1977 in 125 class. It was during a hellacious downpour thunderstorm. The bikes were so muddy and everyone was falling down to the point that they couldn't keep track of the riders numbers. Still don't know exactly where I placed. Jeff Ward was there on, I believe was a Honda 105cc.

Red rockets flying Bananas, suki yaki, kwakas, hondos, ktm, yammy, CANAM, Huskies, CAGS Cagiva, Bulls Bultaco, great days on Hard ROCK tracks 🇬🇧 I'm talking soil all gone only BOULDERS left, minimum protection just a skid lid ⛑

We had some really fast riders who rode Rio Bravo on a regular basis, Keith Duffy, Shawn Kelly, and Greg Howard just to name a few. Duffy would have went pro but a serious ankle injury ended his career.
