Well she’s not buff like Jupiter or athletic like Venus. Mercury just uses her skill set like any other sailor scout. Def not physically strong. But what Mercury can do is still valuable to the team
She did got by with just that one "attack" for a good portion of the series. It's more a Swiss knife than a sword. I do remember it can actually freeze stuff if shot at point blank, she just prefer to use it to screen allies.
Mercury and Venus didn't have as strong of attacks as Mars and Jupiter, but they were much more versatile. While Mars and Jupiter could just attack with brute force, Mercury could make shields and freeze others and Venus could bind others with her chain.
Sailor Mercury was very clever using her attack to distract Tuxedo Mask while she got the crystal from him and destroy it. She also distracted Tuxedo Mask long enough for Sailor Moon and the other Guardians to get there.
I’m going to regret asking this but WHY DOES EVERYONE HATE THE ENGLISH DUB!? For the majority of us, we were small kids when it came out- and we didn’t know that Sailor Moon was a Japanese show (like Power Rangers or Pokemon, etc.). Even if we did the Internet was in its infancy and UA-cam didn’t exist so it wasn’t like we could get the Japanese version. For the majority of us the English version is ALL WE KNEW and it was FANTASTIC! If you’re a Sailor Moon fan don’t insult the experience your fellow fans had just because YOU felt your experience with the original or whatever other language you saw it in was better. This was OUT experience! I will ALWAYS be thankful for the English dub! And I think it’s a real shame that Viz re-dubbed the show in English with new actors! That was someone’s acting legacy and now we English fans can’t get the “original” on DVD or Blu-Ray. Plus, when you go to a Fan Convention or Anime Convention or Comic Con and the English Sailor Moon actors from the 90s are attending the room IS PACKED. The Viz English actors barely fill a room (unless they do other anime voices). Why is this the case? Because it was our childhood! And this dub STILL rocks! Yes, some voice acting was...questionable...like, Sailor Moon’s Linda Ballantyne (sorry) but it was overall a kick ass show in ANY language so to the haters, calm down. Let us fans enjoy this! :D Don’t call it shit because it was shit for you- it was shit for all of us.

If anyone is useless its not any of the senshi but Tuxedo Kamen/Mask in his normal non-brainwashed state because he mostly just throws some roses and gives a speech and leaves or maybe if we are lucky he will use his cane. Oddly enough he seems to be more competent when he is brainwashed and evil.
The manga isn't made only for the anime, in fact the anime made changes that Naoko did not like. Manga Mamoru had his own power 'Tuxedo La Smoking Bomber' and was generally more powerful. Anime Mamoru just had roses and a cane. Also the original anime was done by people other than Naoko and one of the directors even said in an interview that he hated Mamoru(it shows too).
The director that hated Mamoru btw was Kunihiko Ikuhara. uranime.nekomusume.net/misc/ikuhara_interview.iphtml. He was the one that was responsible for the R season breakup which btw did not happen in the manga.
