Strange that often, often, tears had she, Podivno že často často slzívala
And now also weep I, swarthy cheeks torment I, A teď také pláčem snědé líce mučím
When Gypsy children play and sing, play and sing, teach I Když cigánské děti hrát a zpívat hrát a zpívat učím.
Kydž mne stará matka is the fourth of seven windows into gypsy life entitled "Cigánské basně (Gypsy poems), published in a collection of poems by Adolf Heyduk (1853-1923) in 1859. At a time of great animosity between Roma and the native Czech people, the suite of poems were written as a plea by a gypsy to the settled population that gypsies were human too. The poems were badly received. In Když mne stará matka, Adolf's second line is not declaring that it is "strange" that his Mum/Grandma had tears in her eyes, he is saying, "Yes ! YOU may think it strange, but we are human too. We have a history and memories; we have souls. Tears come welling up when I teach my children as memories na moji drahou maminku/babičku come flooding back to me. So it was, when she taught me, tears had she."
Antonín Dvořák and Adolf both spoke German fluently, you had to, to be in the mainstream of the intelligencia of the German part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. As a composer of note, Antonín was well known in Viennese society and he and Gustav Walter, a famous tenor in Vienna knew each other. Gustav wanted a suite of songs that he could use as his signature. He consulted Antonín. Antonín always declared that he was useless at words but he could compose music to the words of others and he introduced Gustav to Adolf's poetry. A collaborative venture gave Gustav his suite of songs, the publication of "Cigánské melodie/Zigeunermelodien" for Antonín, and an heightened profile for Adolf's poetry. Adolf wrote the German words, he could write beautifully in German as well as his native Czech. Here is a translation of the male version of the last two lines of Adolf's German words.
Now, as I teach the little ones to sing, it trickles down,

Although many ignorant pontificators try to claim that Natalie McFarron's words, "Songs my Mother taught me" are a translation, THEY ARE NOT. They are words with similar sentiment but have nothing to do with Adolf's motivation for writing "Cigánskí básně".
"Songs my Mother taught me" published by Natalie in 1916 just before her death are a declaration of love by a person for HIS or HER Mum and makes no reference to gypsies. Adolf's poetry were the words of a gypsy MAN. Gustav sang the German male words, of course, Whilst most of the seven songs are really only suitable for a man to sing, Antonín's music was for Gustav's tenor voice, therefore suitable for soprano and mezzo voices so the sheet music for the gender neutral N°4, "Když mne stará matka/Als die alte Mutter" sold well in German and Czech speaking lands for young ladies to sing wherever the parlour had a piano. Adolf wrote male and female words in German, the female version, gender corrected, omits reference to the beard. The sheet music has Czech and German words under the music breaking into three lines ... Czech/Male German/Female German where necessary.
