    Such a good daily! I picked up a B8.5 black edition S4 with the factory sports diff a few months ago. Fitted RS5 brakes which was fairly straight forwards although I had to fit spacers to clear the 19" rotors. Had an MRC stage 2 package this week and its now an animal. Going for the 034 motorsport ARB and Bilstein coilovers next as the standard suspension is the weak point now. Probably go for the rear silencer delete as MRC advised the standard exhaust is not really restrictive so I am not sure I can justify 2k for a full system. Thank you for all your videos, they are most useful for those of us that like to attempt some work at home!

      Thanks mark appreciate you taking the time to comment. Yeah i bet that’s a lot of fun now it’s stage 2, exhaust wise yeah it’s more for sound than performance as stock has plenty of flow. The backbox Delete for the money is the best option otherwise your looking at a 4 figure cat back. Rs5 brakes are a lovely touch! Thanks for watching

    When i bought my 2011 used B8 S4, i intentionally looked for stock S4's, the tuned ones are almost certain to be abused. Also service book is up to date, including S-tronic oil change, but i later change it again at 120.000 km ( i wanted a manual but those are rare here in Germany in avant shape). I guess when i want to drive a manual i have to drive my old manual 2007 TT 8J. S-tronic is way faster than i can shift and you dont feel any shakes so big plus in speed and confort, i'm happy with the double clutch choice now. Still both great cars, i drive them daily, TT for the twisty roads and the S4 for autobahn.

    My 2013 Infinity G37 was just declared a total loss by my Insurance company, and I'm looking at a 100% loaded, Black on Black 2010 S4 this weekend. I loved my G37 and I really enjoyed the "370Z in a Tuxedo" driving experience, but if this S4 checks out, it's a huge level-of-magnitude better than my Infinity. You could add the DSG transmission to the list of reliability concerns. I bought a stock 2012 B8 S4 in 2017 with 90K km. No evidence of abuse. At 148K km, the transmission failed with codes stored: P1624 - Requirement, malfunction lamp on active, P17D800 - Torque limitation due to clutch temperature, P17D000 - Clutch 2 slip too big, P060A00 - Internal control module monitoring processor performance & P081E - Excessive clutch "B" slippage. Repair estimate is $17K at Audi dealership, $10K at reputable independent transmission shop. WTF.

      Not really no. Tax is lower than most performance cars at 260 a year (Im paying 320 on my 1.8T octavia rs that has less than half the power) Insurance is a bit steep but if you have a few years no claims its alright. You can get one for about 8-9 grand, which you can finance if you cant save up. The engine it self is one of the most solid engines in the vag-group, the smaller turbos have more common issues than this one. The only thing that could cost on this on the long term is the adaptive suspension, but even that is a rare failure, and you can skip it altogether because it was optional, so if you are scared of it you can just get one that doesnt have it. All in all I would say this is a solid investment if you buy one that was maintained properly and taken care of.

    • @TheParrottBros
      @TheParrottBros  3 роки тому

      They are brilliant cars and like Waifuracer says they are not horrendous, yes they guzzle fuel but what performance car doesn't, Insurance is relative to your age, if your older like me then they are not to bad same as any other performance car, you just have to be mindful if something does go wrong it could be upwards of £1000 instantly haha, but then thats no difference to a bmw etc. I would recommend anyone to a b8 s4 I love mine

    Great to have a video on the B8 from a 2020 perspective, very helpful.
    I just started looking into this car, in fact it is my first car purchase and there's a lot of noise online around potential issues that worry me. Those being timing belt and timing chain, water pump, thermostat, and oxygen sensor. What is your take on that? I test drove a 2011 S4 with 86k miles, it drove wonderfully but I don't want to have to replace any of those parts any soon (say at least for another 20-30k miles) since these are expensive repairs. Service history doesn't show any replacement or repair of those parts so far.
    Maybe even worth a full video? I saw a lot of forums out there talking about those issues but I'd love to hear your take on it. Either way thanks in advance for your opinion man, cheers!

      Hey jan, firstly thanks for the message and watching the channel. Now down to business. I’ll be real honest with you, if you are concerned about high maintenance costs then buying a 9/10 year old performance audi probably isn’t the best thing to do. These cars do require yearly maintenance that is routine based on the advises. That alone can be £1k a year. That being said if you know a good mechanic it can be a lot less. I would always recommend buying a car with a good history and it has been well looked after it may cost a little bit more better be worth it in the long run. Don’t be afraid of buying one with more miles as it’s likely to be better value for money. Thanks TPB

I avoided looking at any higher mileage S4 B8s previously, but your comment has given me a bit more confidence in searching the market in midst of this lockdown. Hopefully I’ll be able to get more bang for my buck with a slightly higher mileage model. I'm looking at getting a manual b8, coming from a MK7 Golf R and just wanting a nicer engine note as well as a decent upgrade in power (will take to stage 1 and possibly stage 2 at some point). Nothing else seems to offer the package this does, with a manual at least. Out with the obvious servicing etc, have you had to carry out much in regards to maintenance on yours? Or has anything gone wrong unexpectedly? The golf has had pretty much nothing go wrong on me, not sure I can expect the same from an S4 of this age

    The A4 B8 Avant is such a good looking car. I have an A4 B8 3.0 TDI saloon which was a bit of an impulse buy as it was a "bargain". Well it was until insurance, full service (including s-tronic) and two new tyres were taken into account...
    I'm thinking of getting a stage 1 remap which should comfortably take it to 290/300bhp and 600Nm, but I keep reading horror stories about the s-tronic box and its torque limits. I have a 7 speed box and Audi says it's good for 600Nm at 9000rpm. Now obviously the diesel only hits half of those revs so I assume a remap is well within tolerance.
    The S4 revs far higher. Have you had any problems with the box since your remap? Cheers.

    Hi mate, Great video, you're good at holding interest and not babbling or talking in circles!
    I just bought an B8.5 A5 sportback with the 3.0Tfsi, and i am looking for an exhaust note that is nice without drone or high rasp, but still wife friendly and not obnoxious when just cruising. After reading through the Audi forum for this motor, that seems to be a tall ask haha.
    I know camera can inaccurately portray how loud an exhaust is compared to in person. I'd like your opinion on two things:
    How's the volume during very conservative driving? I'd like it to be barely noticeable while windows are up / wife in car.
    How much do you think tips play a part in the sound with just rear mufflers delete? Tossing up between quad tips or larger dual tips.
    Thanks a lot!

    • @TheParrottBros
      @TheParrottBros  4 роки тому

      I have heard many say that the oval tips as in one tip either side can create a lot of unwanted additional noise, it’s hard to say between the camera and real life I get that,
      There is a reasonable amount of noise, even with the windows shut, the car sounds best when you’re driving it hard as it’s more of a performance noise than just being a loud exhaust, I will do a video in the next couple of weeks hopefully providing this lockdown is over where I will take it through The varied speeds inside with a good microphone. But if you are after a quiet car exhaust for daily driving then it’s probably not for you, it can be raspy at times. Hope that helps

      Mileage isn’t an issue providing it has had the correct servicing schedule, just factor in the higher the mileage the more likely it may need a few bits like bushes, cv joints etc.

    • @TheParrottBros

      Like any performance car when they get old they may use a little more oil, on these engines its usually 2 reasons.
      main reason is the pcv system is blocked or the valve is failing. the other reason is down to oil viscosity
      i would recommend going from 5w30 to 5w40, that usually cures oil usage somewhat.
      Its not something i would worry about unless its using a litre in less than 1000 miles

    Had my b8 s4 for almost 6 months, spent nearly as much time fixing it or getting it fixed as I spent driving it. Thanks but no thanks. Audi S4 provides 335i performance at m3 price. At least in the US anyway. Also, given that you are not in the US, you probably should know that it has the same stronic trans Audi put into the A4 and A5 and these transmissions are falling left and right in those vehicles. Guess why mine was getting fixed so much. Anyway, my first and last Audi, they positively suck.

      Curious, did you buy a used S4? if so, did you do your due diligence on the maintenance on the car before you bought it? the 3.0 supercharged v6 is arguably one of the most reliable engines ever put into an audi. The dsg should be serviced every 35-40k miles, do that and your s4 will last well over 150k miles. these cars are known for being bought used with well over 100-150k miles and still run strong. Ive been in the market for an s4 for months and ive passed on a handful of cars that look great on the outside but when I ask for the Carfax and poke my nose a bit and call the dealerships they were serviced at by the first owner under warranty, Ive come to find out that the car has not been maintained properly. Don't just buy a used s4, but a WELL MAINTAINED S4 and you wont regret it. that goes in general for any car you buy. common sense.

      @@chipchelios Well duh, bought brand new. Of course I bought it used, no brand new b8 s anymore. Not saying anything about the engine, but the trans was the main pain point. And the service you are talking about won't help when your gear selector lever sensor decides to quit. It is in the gear oil compartment where the actual "manual" gears are, and common service you are referring to only implies changing the atf oil in mech and clutch compartment. That's what failed in my trans first, and that's a big and/or expensive job to do. That sensor failure is not uncommon on relatively low mile gingerly driven cars including b8.5 cars. All would have been fine if the s4s were priced accordingly, but the good ones cost m3 money and the ones you get for a prices of a relatively good 335i are just completely rundown. That's my main issue with these cars, not enough performance for the money. Given that you might get a nice surprise like that sensor (some people drove for hours home from the dealer and all was fine, however, when the actual gear oil started to get hot after driving in stop and go, that's when that sensor reared its ugly head), 100-150kmile s4 which runs strong is probably not a smart idea. It's hard to assess how much life is actually left in the dsg. Plus, I don't appreciate that cats are tough to replace and you will burn them with tunes. And again, look at the forums, dsg failures are not uncommon. Did they all abused their cars? Maybe. But try finding an S4 which was driven by a grandma.

      @@fastboatster I get where you're coming from, but I asked if you did your due diligence on the cars maintenance before you bought. Most people don't. If you go on Audizine you will read that 9/10 times, the guys that have issues are the ones who didn't do their homework before they bought, so they end up on the forums asking for help after an issue like the ones you've mentioned above. You've got to expect that these cars have gotten their necks wrung when you buy used, but having a comprehensive list of maintenance that was performed on the car throughout its life span is better than buying one without it. I've given 3 S4s a hard pass in the last week that didn't have more than 3 service records for the car..i called the dealerships after I got my hands on the carfax and asked the service guy to give me a rundown of everything that car was in the shop for while it was under warranty, even after. If youre gonna buy a used car to better be ready to pay for some maintenance but if the car was regularly maintained you have less chances of it becoming a money pit. Regardless, you should be ready to pay to play with these cars if you're gonna buy a car with a supercharger or a turbo. I have an a4 that I bought used last year with 66k miles. I made sure it was religiously maintained before I bought and it was..i took it to an audi dealership, had them run full diagnostic and got engine work covered under warranty including a turbo before it expired. I've put another $1500 in transmission service and parts and now she runs like a champ. Some of the repairs I did were preventative, but at least I have peace of mind when I drive it. Thats the cost of owning an audi or any entry luxury car

      Jamuzik I think you are indirectly confirming that good s4s are far few and in between. As for the service records, my car had one dsg service 10kmile late. No doubt that’s what caused trans problems, right?))) Like I said, it had gear selector lever position sensor failure and it’s in the gear compartment which has mtf oil and doesn’t get normally serviced during your dsg “service”. As for Audizine, B8 S4 section doesn’t even have sticky buyers guide thread and everybody paints the picture of the S4 being very reliable and almost an m3 level car. When I was doing my research, I was prepared to have mech unit replaced or repaired, but that sensor which requires entire transmission tear down is buried very deep, both in the trans and Audizine threads. recently there have been a few threads popping up about that sensor failure, though. everybody is hush hush about the problems, not uncommon to see the same person talk in a high mile thread how their car has been holding up great with all the tunes and then see them mention in passing in another thread that they already had to replace the trans or posting ads looking for another used transmission.
      As for pay to play argument - I have experience with e90 BMWs and I think that even with turbos, hpfp and injectors, it’s a lot cheaper to play there. But that’s just me, I’m comfortable pulling the turbos out there now, it’s not scary at all after I had to pull the trans on the s4 the second time and this time I did it myself

      Sorry to hear that you’re having so many issues with Your s4, I think with all cars there will be some faults as they get older will become more common, a lot of people drum on about the gearbox issues because the most common failure is the mech unit. Doesn’t mean to say that there isn’t other issues that occur they just seem less common. Comparing against BMW’s is not something I can do as have very little experience with the newer stuff but have seen some great tuned figures from the newer models. It all depends what your after as most BMW’s are rwd unless you manage to get an xdrive model but the hold a good price from what I’ve seen. On a whole besides routine service issues like water pump failure and Pcv issues the b8 s4 is a good car, as the model gets older there is always a chance the box or other more expensive items may fail but that’s the same across most performance cars. Thanks for your comments. All input appreciated
