After my 2nd bout with cancer I wanted to get back in shape. I got my time down to 15 minute miles without a ruck. I got up to 25 pounds at that pace before tearing up my hip. The VA doctor is a retired Ranger and he told me no more rucking. It took me a year to heal. It’s time to start over. So here I go. Great video, Inspiring and fun. Semper Fi brother.
Omg I was in the infantry and I experienced pain I’ve never knew I’d have. My last 5 mile in AIT I had a heat cramp in my ass all the way down to my knee. I finished the run without falling out. The 20 mile March was fine. My 20 mile road March at Ft. Campbell was a different story. Bottom of both feet nothing but huge bleeding blisters and I lost 2 toe nails (didn’t notice the blood coming out of my leather boots) from my feet sweating. I missed my 3 hour mark by 8 seconds. Did the March again the next day. I finished in 2 hours and 40 minutes. It’s amazing what our body’s can take.
The best thing for me when I was infantry was the fact that I was a boy scout in a troop that did lots of high adventure backpacking trips in the mountains. So when I was a teenager I was already used to doing 10-15 mile days with a 40-50 lb pack in the mountains. When I got to Benning and we started "ruck marching" it was nothing but a thing. Last year I started adding rucking back into my fitness regime. As a 54 year old, I can maintain 16 min/mile pace with a 50 lb pack for the 5 miles I usually do. Not to EIB 15 min/mile standard, but I'm a lot older and the pack is heavier than EIB standard.

SFAS 1989 (fail) and was selected SFAS 1992 (dropped from Q). 1989 the Sand Man kicked my ass. The day before team events I had such bad blisters the Camp Medic had to do a biopsy punch on my foot. I was using polypropylene underneath wool socks with mole skin as needed. I think the layering of socks might have kicked my ass. AT Q, I bulged L4 and ruptured L5 which spiked into the left sciatic nerve (worst pain ever). I didn't spend enough time conditioning my corp. I ended back in Germany (7th SOSC) as my original MOS, Chaplain Assistant. Taking care of you fine men 😁
I should add. I was stationed at Ft. Carson and trained in the mountains. The wife would drop me off West of Manitou Springs and I would navigate back with map and compass. One time I Fu*&cked up while boxing my bearing and ended up in Cheyenne Canyon (NORAD territory). I ended up getting a polite escort after an ID check and told to stay out of their back yard, lol.
Awesome video. Wish I had some poles when I climbed Mount Toubkal last year. Very much recommended - it's the highest mountain in North Africa and doesn't require a lot of technique. It's about 2000m of elevation gain to the 4100m summit. And if you ever come to Switzerland, I can show you some great routes and views as well.
Yeah, dont try and do a 20 miler your first time though lmao. Do daypack hiking with running shoes for a bit to see how you like it, then invest in boots, and then a proper backpack (external frame small packs are really nice for light weights, but try some at an outdoor fitter of all kinds)
@@3vpme2 dont go on real rough trails until you have boots though. Your ankles will appreciate it. Just find for instance a nice semipaved trail around a lake and/or park, and put some miles in with running shoes on. Or do a treadmill with a school backpack with some weight in it, or both.
Poles are a winner when you can use them....fall over going downhill carrying 80lbs hurts. Wear long, loose sleeves and a boonie....protect ears and neck...ears will be like crispy bacon if you keep frying em. Use micropore/zinc oxide tape on feet to stop blisters....and if getting hotspot...stop and tape it...or if can't stop pour cold water into boot....lubricates and cools until you can deal with it properly. Steep hills are quicker than the tempting long but less steep drags. Quicker you go the less time you'll suffer....don't stop moving but do stop messing with your straps...it won't help with the pain which will come and go anyway. Take the steep route and just think of that person you really should have punched...get angry...it'll distract you from the pain, give you energy and you'll be up in no tme...lol.
Great video! If anyone is also interested in air assault I’d suggest this video, I was with 5th group over at Campbell and even some of the team guys I went through the class with to get our wings said those big hills on the 12 mile trail were a bitch.
