For those of you asking about why so many people get shot in the cheek, please keep this in mind: Martin Scorcese is one of the executive producers of this show and if you've watched his movies, then you know people get shot in the cheek often in them.
it’s Center mass on your face basically…if you were to not intentionally aim and just point and shoot at close range that’s where you will naturally aim..guaranteed it’s going to be lethal
Martin Scorsese was brought in to produce and direct the first episode of the first season. That was it. He did not have any other connection to this show and certainly not this particular episode which is way after that first episode. His name might’ve been used later on but only to bring in more attention. He didn't actually produce or direct anything other than the first episode of season 1.
Great scene. Love how the guy is smiling at the beginning like trying to make a joke and then you realize he is looking down the business end of Richard Harrow's gun. The scene rocks. This guy is a kick ass actor. My cousin showed me this scene and now I am going to watch Season 4. Because Harrow dies, I wasn't going to bother but if the rest of the season is as good as this. I am in.
Something I noticed on a rewatch is that Harrow almost exclusively aims for the head. I think there was one or two shotgun blasts to the chest. Considering how much work goes into planning gun fight scenes with squibs and the like, I really believe it was a conscious choice. Part of it could be down to the robotic, professional 1 shot 1 kill approach he has, but I do think that pulling a trigger and destroying someone's face must surely have an effect on his character. I associate his headshotting with the scene of him eating breakfast with Jimmy's family, lamenting it's "everything" and he cannot have it due to the damage done to his soul. When he kills Manny, his face is a ruin. When he rescues Tommy, it is a ten ring shooting gallery. Most mobsters in that scene get domed. (even a guy who took a shotgun to the chest.) All that is to say, I think the cheek shot may have been an accident, sub-conscious or possibly intentional. None of that matters, the pause after does. I do think it's related to the fact he was given a chance to pass on something to his child and chose to use the opportunity to further his own life at the expense of showing love to his family. He gave him a small taste of his own fate in expiation.
I keep hearing that he was selfish, and admittedly I haven't made it that far in the show to know enough but isn't he also showing love by trying to live to see his kid again?
Probably a byproduct of his experiences in the war. A total disregard for human life and numbed to the point of killing not meaning much at all anymore.
True that, I mean he did tell Nucky he had killed like 60 something people, that's no small number most serial killers never get past ten usually, so having done it that much and thinking about each respective one... That does shit to your head one way or another.
Suppressor technology at that time was very primitive, and it would still have sounded like a gunshot and would have hurt your ears, but not so loud that it would cause ringing for the rest of the day. Its only in the last year or two with special subsonic ammunition that we've been able to achieve anything like this.
@@BoopSnoot Ears hurt? ringing for the rest of the day? You haven't ever shot a gun have you. Iv shot shotguns and many high caliber rifles and never once did my ears hurt nor did I have a ringing in my ear for the rest of the day. Terrence Winter either really like watching people die or is just good at depicting it. BE has some of the most visceral deaths and fight scenes I can think of in modern television.
Not sure how many threaded 1911 barrels were available in that era...; although I suppose one could have an endcap fabricated to function as the 1911's barrel bushing....
Regarding why didn't he also take the $5000... That would made him a thief... He knows what he's there for, and then word gets it that money won't save you.
Powerful Scene. Brilliantly acted by this guy James Riordan who I believe is from the UK? as is Jack Huston. Season 4 of Boardwalk Empire has just started broadcasting in the UK and the first episode indicates great things. Hope there is plenty of Harrow in this season. Epic character.
Should've at least had him open up the safe 🤷♀️ I mean back then $5,000 is roughly $75,000 by today's standards.. and back then that money could get you a hell of a lot farther
It was an homage. Earlier on in the ep, the same gas station attendant that Chigurh does his little coin flip shit with is the same guy tending bar, playing pretty much the exact same role.
Except in no country 1) The killer killed innocents based on luck so effectively for no reason. 2) He has a cowardly cunt only picking on unaware helpless victims. 3) He is basically death, killing at random, with no reason and no morals. I feel this is the point of his character and I also feel it is the most facile, idiotic point to make with a character. Duh, we all know the nature of death - so fucking what. I love the Cohens - Miller's Crossing is the greatest movie ever told. But boy did no country suck, basically because of the weakest source material imaginable. I have this rant every 6 weeks on doctor's orders. Thanks for reading.
James Riordan is very impressive in this scene, going from casual to begging for his life with the camera on him the whole time. In other words, if you notice in most shows the camera goes back and forth from person to person, here it just holds on him and he delivers. I am reluctant to post spoilers because not everyone has viewed the season in its entirety but suffice it to say whatever the reason Harrow killed Werner, it is a big turning point for Harrow. I like that Harrow is changed by something he did rather than something that was done to him. I think it is very powerful. If you watch "behind the episode" you will get some insight from the writers into what I am talking about. Season 5, I can't wait. Having said all that, I would REALLY appreciate some more women of all ages in small and large roles.
Man, that was longest hold of intense and utter tension I’ve ever seen in a TV Show to Date. My goodness did anybody else say “Geez La Weez who the F*C# is he talking to already”? Then to see Harrow holding the gun lol and then was like “Oh Yeah that makes sense now.. Lol

I love how you can hear the clock ticking, like warners life has a timer for when he dies
Guy playing Werner has great acting.
Should have signed the card for his daughter. And asked Harrow to take the funds from the safe to make it look like a robbery.
The guy who played werner is freaking incredible!
I have to say this scene fascinates me. The acting has me GLUED to the screen.
God bless richard harrow
The amount of guys that get shot in the cheek in the show is a really dark running gag
For those of you asking about why so many people get shot in the cheek, please keep this in mind: Martin Scorcese is one of the executive producers of this show and if you've watched his movies, then you know people get shot in the cheek often in them.
Yeah but WHY lol
it’s Center mass on your face basically…if you were to not intentionally aim and just point and shoot at close range that’s where you will naturally aim..guaranteed it’s going to be lethal
I am in.
Even season 5 is still great, plus it gives you some insight into the SERIOUSLY fucked up past of Nucky, the Commodore, and Gillian
Thanks for spoiling me the death of the shooter. Lol
(even a guy who took a shotgun to the chest.)
All that is to say, I think the cheek shot may have been an accident, sub-conscious or possibly intentional.
Yeah i noticed that as well that theres alot of cheek shots. Even the last scene where nucky gets shot is in the cheek.
I just realized that Richard Harrow was not just ruthless, but he was also sadistic.
*turns off desk lamp.
Richard Harrow, energy conservationist.
Impossible to negotiate with Richard Harrow one of the best character’s I’ve seen. You could alone make a film about this guy.
With the clock ticking in the background. So good.
I'm not gonna lie, that silencer sound effect may very well be my favorite sound effect ever.
AIC SKS lol ur a bitch
AIC SKS buzz fucking kill
Suppressor technology at that time was very primitive, and it would still have sounded like a gunshot and would have hurt your ears, but not so loud that it would cause ringing for the rest of the day. Its only in the last year or two with special subsonic ammunition that we've been able to achieve anything like this.
@@JohnDavis-im1oy what does that have to do with anything related to this show? Oh yeah, I know. Absolutely nothing. Nice job!
@@BoopSnoot Ears hurt? ringing for the rest of the day? You haven't ever shot a gun have you. Iv shot shotguns and many high caliber rifles and never once did my ears hurt nor did I have a ringing in my ear for the rest of the day. Sure its loud but you make it sound so much worse then it actually is.
I love how he shuts off the light before leaving. No wasting of electricity for him!
A light still on in the dead of night would have raised suspicion to any beat cops walking by.
Terrence Winter either really like watching people die or is just good at depicting it. BE has some of the most visceral deaths and fight scenes I can think of in modern television.
Pretty close to the sound of a real silencer. Oops, suppressor.
Not sure how many threaded 1911 barrels were available in that era...; although I suppose one could have an endcap fabricated to function as the 1911's barrel bushing....
Harrow's the silencer. He's using a suppressor.
Regarding why didn't he also take the $5000... That would made him a thief... He knows what he's there for, and then word gets it that money won't save you.
like Ryan Reynolds said in dead pool with the pizza delivery guy when he was in the guy's apartment. you gave me your wallet. it makes it mine now 🤣🤣
The man should have written the card to his kid.
I hope I don't face death this way.
Make sure you don't have any shady business dealings lol
A rather short adventure......
Better than cancer.
You probably will.
@@lucianakueker6027 It's not a question of want it's a question of fate.
“I know you’re going to die”.......pfft....pfft.
Flawless Victory
That “why...” after he got shot ...
- Elviira, you want Elvira.
- I've already got her
- $10,000. I have it in Spain
Video starts with "Mr Werner?..."
Oh shit, based on the title I know where this is going :
He turns the desk light out before he leaves. We see his hand go there. That’s all. Next shot, the light is out.
Ever clip with Richard is Richard kill’s “insert name here”.
Epic character.
he shoots him at the completely wrong angles for those wounds 🤣
Should've at least had him open up the safe 🤷♀️ I mean back then $5,000 is roughly $75,000 by today's standards.. and back then that money could get you a hell of a lot farther
No is not clown! Is £150,000 muppet
Imagine surviving that first bullet. Harsh.
He shot him in the mouth for spouting weasel words
1:49.... right there he reminds me of the killer in "No Country For Old Men". Killing is a business and my business is killing. Peace.
It was an homage. Earlier on in the ep, the same gas station attendant that Chigurh does his little coin flip shit with is the same guy tending bar, playing pretty much the exact same role.
*violence
Except in no country
1) The killer killed innocents based on luck so effectively for no reason.
There are some people who really are like this. They think no more of killing someone than we think of throwing eggshells in the garbage.
@@steeleye2112 I agree with you except he wasn’t a coward. Anton has ice in his veins.
Lauren Faraday Thank you for the knowledge sis
Lauren Faraday I agree.
This show was about men not women.
What a stupid comment.
Ended a wonderful comment with identidy politics shiit. Inferiority complex on display.
That was pretty personal he wanted him to suffer before he killed him.
If you're in business always have a gun
Mr. Werner should have kept his yap shut after being shot once. He might have lived if Harrow thought the first shot killed him.
Lol
Wow such a realistic silenced gunshot sound, they obviously did their research instead of following the tired old trope of it making an absurd noise like an old monitor being degaussed.
The ticking clock tells you all you need to know.
Harrow was a great character, but he was a bit of a sadist. He dragged this hit out and made Werner suffer a bit more than was necessary.
Werner... "You don't know anything about me !"
Harrow... "You are the kid that used to shine shoes"
"You are going to die" loud and simple to be prepared for the unpleasant faith and ending. I just wonder why?!
“I know you’re going to die”. Cold quote
I’m surprised he was able to say “why?”. That first shot probably took out his entire upper back teeth and he would have been choking on blood and teeth/bone fragments. I’d rather be shot in the knee than in the side of the face. You will absolutely survive it and you will absolutely wish you hadn’t
Don't beg. Hide a weapon and fight.
Boardwalk Empire war meine erste Serie ,die ich mir auf DVD zugelegt habe...Top!
why do people always get shot in the cheek in this shwo
hurts more.
he was still alive after the second shot.
i supppose a shrink would say he wants them to suffer like he did when he lost half of his face.
That was some great acting.
The actors name is James Riordan I found him on IMDB. He looks very different in other things.
Wow! One of the most intense scenes I have ever seen in a film.
"Why?"
Good question Mr. Werner, this storyline wasn't very clear. They sorta set-it up it like a side-story with Richard. Who was Mr. Werner and why did Harrow kill him? Been awhile since I saw Season 4 so I have no clue.
That ended up on the cutting room floor. Actually there is a lot of background missing from some episodes. That's the problem of multiple directors & trying to fit stuff into time slots
I wish silencers really sounded like that. Gunshots would be so badass in real life then! haha
lol ya saw a great thing on youtube about how hollywoood makes them mouse farts lol
depends on caliber. 22 is very quiet supressed
Having heard an HK USP in 9mm that was suppressed fired indoors, I'd say that sound effect was quite darn good.
They had suppressors back then
Werner did everything to save his secretary’s life
I've only seen clips of this show but damn do these people love shooting each other in the cheek
He shoulda took the money too
I would've taken the money too.
So considerate.
Turns off the light to save electricity.
Still a better love story than twilight.
Fun fact: Rollerblades (with the wheels behind each other) were invented as early as 1760. Rollers skates (2+2 wheels) came 100 years later.
