Really enjoyed watching this trip out to Isle Royale, Brenton. When you mentioned going to that store at the end of the season, and the shelves were looking so bare, it reminded me of the trip Nan and I took to Moosonee & Moose Factory Island, Ontario back maybe 35 years ago. Back then, the only (convenient) way in was via the Polar Bear Express, out of Iroquois Falls... no roads, so you could take the train or walk, or hire a bush pilot. Anyway, back to "end of the season"... while we were at Bush Lake Camp on a fishing trip, we decided to take a side trip the second week... the camp owner suggested the Polar Bear Express. No reservations, no calls ahead, obviously no cell phones back then... we just went. It was about mid-September. So we rode the Express to Moosonee, took a ferry over and spent a day or two on Moose Factory Island... shops were closing down... back in Moosonee of the two lodges in town, only one was still open. We had our return train ticket... was for a Sunday afternoon departure. We were thinking of staying longer, but then a local Cree clued us in that that train we were scheduled to take was the last train departure for the season! If we had missed that train, we would have been stuck, with very, very few options to get back to Iroquois Falls, and to our vehicle, and back to Bush Lake, and eventually home. That was a trip to remember. Arctic char and moose on the lodge menu, steel-hulled boat out into James Bay & Hudson Bay; cargo canoe ride to "Dinosaur Island" for fossil hunting; and a helicopter ride over polar bears. Good times, good memories.
That sounds like an incredible trip John. I've always dreamed of going up to the NWT (they call is something different now) since I was a teenager...just study maps and dream about it. Thanks for sharing that memory
@@backwatersandbackroads I bet you're thinking of what is called Nunavut today. We have never been that far north and west... we were still in Ontario... way far north in Ontario, but still Ontario. Nunavit has to be another world entirely. If you ever decide to go, let me know... I'd talk myself into accompanying you on THAT trip!
Another great trip, I have to agree, the simplest food tastes great when your hungry and out of your comfort zone. .. The comfort zone we have created in our lives should be called the dead zone, its literally killing us, so props to you for bringing us all along on theses awesome adventures, I decided to go with a full length camper top on the Wooldridge, its got 14' of open deck space, deep V shanty lol.
DC! That Wooldridge is going to be awesome man. Honestly, if it was today...I probably would have kept it and made a Superior explorer of some sort out of it. A nice long cabin with a modest fishing deck is all you need. The Sportsman only has maybe 2 feet of fishable deck with the top fully up....and it's enough.
Ramens, a can of tuna fish, and the cheese powder from Mac n cheese and ya got a meal! All you can get from food pantry too. Really cool trip. Cemetery island, the camps, that chimney made from rocks from the banks. I've done the walk it out thing before. Gota do what ya gota do lol. Great vid man! Be safe.
FYI, those wooden grave markers and fences are re-creations and not the originals. When we were on Isle Royale years ago, we were told that at the park historical center on Mott Island.
Hey Uncommon Loon! 🤣 Loved the weather on this video! And I eat ramen all the time! Of course I add a lot to it but I love it! Always love to see the old cabins! You know me! Love to window shop through your channel! Glad you caught some fish and walking your boat was actually pretty cool! 😁
Hi Goldie, I like overcast days like this too. Reminds me of the couple of years I lived in the seattle area. Too much of it can start to insidiously creep into one's psyche though...careful. I'm sure you have a plan for that. Vitamin D? Thank you for sticking around my little channel...always look forward to your feedback.
@@backwatersandbackroads I have my bottles of Vitamin D ready for the long winter. 😁 But I think I am happiest when its dark overcast days. Sit by a campfire for hours and just think. I love what you've done with the place LOL. I used to camp every weekend and toyed with the idea of going to a place where you could only use a kayak to get to your spot. I just never made it to that particular one. Maybe sometime in the near future. Thanks for taking us along!
Another great video. I know you are an experienced Lake Superior guy, but in my experience, the later in the summer, the windier it gets. June is best for wind, but you can get really thick fog. If you have radar and/or a good GPS chart plotter, you are OK. The first time I circumnavigated IR I had no radar, no GPS, and I could not even get the marine weather forecast until I got there. It is an amazing place, but you need to plan well. In 2000, I circumnavigated in my 25 foot ChrisCraft Catalina. The worst waves forecast were 2-4 feet. Heading northeast approaching Chippewa Harbor, I was in 7 foot rollers from the SW. Crossing back to Grand Portage, the waves were 4-6 feet. It took me 2 hours and 15 minutes to go 22 miles. I would suggest you run from Gand Portage to Rock of Ages LH, and on your way to Windigo, check out the wreck of the America, which you can see from the surface.
Hi Mike, the back side/north side is definitely getting explored next year. The Sportsman got the job done, but I'll probably use a different boat next time. Have you pulled up to Rock of Ages and explored it up close?
