  • A new documentary on Lourdes, originally released in France in 2019, is now in theaters in the US. It is intensely moving and one of the best religious films in recent years. Written by a Catholic who used to care for the sick at Lourdes, it is an inside look at the spiritual but also deeply human needs and aspirations that lead people to this place of miracles.
The film follows a a small selection of infirm individuals and their families making their way to Lourdes in hope of physical healing or spiritual consolation. These individuals are prompted to say their private prayers out loud, making visible their poverty and wounds, but also their hope in the power of the Lady who appeared to St. Bernadette in the grotto.
Particularly moving is the father of two very sick children, one of whom he brings to Lourdes with him. We see father and mother guiding their little boy in the ways of suffering and, even more, of intercessory prayer.
This film was James and Thomas's first return to a movie theater after the pandemic, so they take some time to discuss how the theatrical experience differs from watching a movie at home. They also remark on the difference between documentary as a cinematic art form and documentary as a way of delivering information. Lourdes is definitely the former.

The boy is very cute. Very moving encounters. Guy with Als, his face says it all. Throughout the journey, I feel that they long for peace and acceptance which surpassing everything. They realized that the greatest miracle is feel transcending beyond one's circumstances. It is a human and spiritual film. They do not have to be believers, they were non-judgemental in their pursuit of making the film. They want to tell the humans meeting God experiences for each encounter. Thank you.

Thanks so much Liz! I'm glad to hear this as many of our listeners might not get to see the film itself in the near future. God bless you!

I appreciated your discussion about the experience of seeing a film in a theater. I had a similar thought some years ago about seeing "Into Great Silence" in a theater as opposed to watching the DVD at home. Both have the same programmatic content, but the theater recapitulates in some sense the experience of life in a Carthusian monastery: A number of people gathered in silence for a common endeavor. (And like Carthusian life, it's not for everyone -- at one screening, a couple gave up and left midway through!)

So, I'm just catching up on this. It looks good. I clink the link "to find out where Lourdes is playing." You know, those big cinema cities - New York, LA, Chicago. And what do you know, two of the six cities with screenings are Cleveland and Akron - both within an hour of my home. An hour away and three weeks in the past. I would have thought maybe the Diocese (which includes Cleveland and Akron) might have promoted the screenings. To be fair, maybe it did. But it didn't come up on my radar. C'est la vie. Maybe I can catch it on Disney+. Peace to you both.

William, did you see this in the description? "Want to bring LOURDES to your town? Contact Distrib Films (in Brooklyn). The contact is François Scippa- Kohn, who can be reached by email at fsk@distribfilms.com.

Perhaps you can get your diocese or parish to screen it.
      Peace to you as well!

@@CatholicCulturePod Yes, I saw it and I'm about to send an email to M. Scippa-Kohn this evening. But, as with anything that is worthwhile, I have to push myself to do it.
