Man this was one of the best simple videos you've made! It's so truthful and honest and it presents the short story of driving your daughter to school and interacting with her in a beautiful simple way. This video is well ballanced and it comes full circle in the end. It could easily be a standalone short film. We as viewers also interact by listening closely to every different interpretation and our curiousity makes it even better. Happy birthday Rick and thank you!

I get you. My grandfather had this 60's record of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto. I'm 57 so when I was in my late 20's, early 30's I tried to get it as a CD. Name whoever you want from Itzhak to Joshua and anyone in between. Didn't sound as good as that 60's version by Ruggiero Ricci. It was never found or re-edited as a CD in the 90's (don't know about now).
I spent, really, months searching for it the in the late 2000's, until I found a blog from a form classical musician from a serious Philarmonic/Symphonic orchestra. He would post about... music! And he posted a blog about that recording. Not for free download... But he transfered that very recording into digital.
"You want it? Tell me why..."
I sent him a message and practically describred him my granpa's album cover. Told him how much that record meant to me and how, literally, I wore it out.
Two months later, he sent me the download. I coul hear the needle on the vynil..
    Yes, it's about everyone's ear.... I guess.
    Greetings, from Guadalajara, Mx

When I was a kid, my mom and dad were one of the first in the neighborhood to get a stereo. And it was huge. 10 speakers, mahogany cabinet, and sounded great. Their taste in music ran from jazz, country, contemporary, and classical. It probably explains why I can appreciate a lot of different styles of music. My favourite album was a 1958 recording of Van Cliburn playing Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1. The album is long gone, but I still listen to it on line. It just doesn’t sound as good without the big mahogany cabinet.

This is human base survival. We know what a strawberry looks like so when one comes along with white spots we are triggered that its "different" and might poisen us. This is why people bitch about covers of song so much, it not that they are bad, we are triggered by "different" into survival mode.

My dad (who plays the violin) had an incredible recording of Bela Bartok's Divertimento for Strings made in the early 1970's by the Amati Ensemble in Berlin. I sort of grew up with that record as a kid. To this day it's my favourite piece of classical music. Unfortunately the record got lost somewhere along the road, and it doesn't seem to be rereleased. Now I have countless versions of the Divertimento, and every single one feels off. Things are wrong and nobody gets it perfectly right like the Amati Ensemble, to my despair.

Well, that's completely understandable. I'm made from the same cloth. In classical music it's always the composer and music first, everything else is secondary. Performers, orchestras, rooms, etc.. I found out often I can even accept a recording with mediocre audio quality if it's performed perfectly. Nothing stands in the way of serving the song, whether it's a classical piece or a rock tune. So nothing is wrong with you, Rick. Cheers!

    • @joshdaymusiced
      @joshdaymusiced 9 днів тому +4

I’ve always found that fascinating. I’m a jazz guy, and if I were to sum up the difference between jazz and 20th century classical music inspired by jazz, is who the most important person is in the process. For jazz, it’s the performer, classical, it’s the composer. This becomes evident when you see how different players completely change the tone, feel, key, sometimes the very chord changes from previously recorded versions. Different classical takes are different, but the composer’s notes are law, and there are absolutely incorrect interpretations of the work.

It's so cool and relatable. It reminds me of driving my daughter to school at Dallas High School for Performing Arts and the music we would play and discuss on the way: Peter Gabriel, Earth, Wind & Fire, Bach, and so on. I also remember picking her up after one particularly frustrating day at school and, on the way home, listening to AC/DC. We pulled it to the curb and taught her to let out a primal scream (with the windows up). She's 30 now, and I'll turn 65 in a couple of months, but we still connect over music and the emotion it can drive. Rick, you're the best, keep it up!

What about "Unhappy Birthday" by The Smiths? I used to listen to it, every birthday of mine. Like, everybody wishes you a happy birthday, except Morrissey, he wishes you an unhappy birthday. And it's a phenomenal song on top of it.

HBD Rick. I’m only 3 years behind you. The most fascinating thing to me is that Jarret nailed it. Not because he’s better or worse than other performers, but because he has a more diverse musical palate. People who like Swervedriver need to hear musicians who have at least been exposed to similar things. One can be precise or emotive (or both) but contextual vocabulary exists. You can’t deny it. Classical music will survive, but it will only thrive when the musicians integrate current forms into their expression.

The most relatable video yet. Even more so since I played one of those Eb horn trio recordings as an excerpt on my ear training test an hour ago and visibly winced when the tuning got bad. Happy birthday Rick!

Keep listening! The more you listen to Classical Music, the less need you have to find ONE particular version of a piece...and the more versions you actually start hearing...

    • @SteelheadTed

Interesting. I’ve been on an endless quest for my favorite version of pieces I love.

    • @JacoWium

Like the other poster, I prefer having one definitive favourite version, but it seems like such a futile pursuit sometimes! I have different recordings of several classical pieces in my collection; not for the sake of collecting, but because I may prefer the 1st movement in this recording, but its 2nd movement may be inferior to that of another recording (to my ears), and so on and so on. I wish I could narrow them down to one favourite recording to get rid of too much clutter in my home, but it's impossible!

Really enjoyed this. Personal and very well describing of how fans of particular pieces of music seek a very specific feel from the different versions. This is also why different live recordings of well know songs of other genres keep being interesting to explore.
