I wish that people would take the time to consider that people are not responsible for the wrongs that their governments commit, but have a responsibility to speak truth to power when their governments or representatives say and do things that target and scapegoat others. I have to stand with both the Israelis and Palestinians who have been caught in the middle of political brinksmanship, and have found themselves in the crossfire. I can no more condone the actions of the IDF or assign full blame to Hamas than I can do the opposite. Horrific actions have been taken against innocent people, and tens of thousands of innocents lives have been cut short - and for what? Ancient claims relating to a homeland that one group insists was given to them by God, was lost to them due to a failed insurrection 2 millennia ago, and after survivors of a horrific genocide came back to this place to claim it after a 2,000 year absence, they pushed the people who had been living there out by force. When the United Nations recognized the right of Israel to exist, they likewise called for the creation of two distinct nations on that land - Israel and Palestine. Neither delegation was satisfied with what they received, but Israel became a state while Palestine did not because the Israeli government has run hot and cold on the matter for nearly eighty years. The Palestinian people did not help themselves by resorting to violence, particularly terrorist bombings of civilian areas. But neither have the Israelis helped themselves by their indifference to settlers occupying land set aside for a Palestinian state and by retaliation against Palestinian civilians with far greater fire power. There is blame to assign on high sides, but it is time to stop the bloodshed and human tragedy. Jews and Muslims around the world are being effected, if you can’t sit down together and hammer out differences then ask that a coalition of neutral states be formed to come to a fair and equitable solution under the auspices of the UN Security Council and agree to live peacefully with their plan for thirty years. If you really believe that is too much to expect, then both sides should be cut off and left to fight yo the death, but those who don’t want to die for this stupid conflict to keep on for another two generations should have an opportunity to leave.
Now let’s wait and see more blue in the shoe of future brides! A splendid idea!
