Yea you are right that you can find the guy using the search box, and DM. But, if you don't know the guy's name, id or anything. You just want to send any random use a message then you can try like this. If you know someone's name and you are sure that he has the account with that name only, then yes, search is better option. If you are banned from a server, then technically you are not the member anymore. right? so, you might not be able to send the message. However, if you get the that "Someone's" user id, you can do try.. but I think the message won't go through as you have to share a server to communicate.
