The True, Secret but Good Ending was a literal dark consuming the World but a peaceful,tranquil, and strangely enticing darkness that rests your weary souls unlike the beings from the Abyss that horribly twists the meaning of darkness and plants fear into the hearts of the weak.
Dark Ages might look bad but its not really.
The World is just living a lie about living in the fields of flowers and paradise.

Why would you ever link the first flame? This entire game is evidence that Linking is not the answer.
Because the world still exists when the flame is linked. People are scared of the dark age. They think the world will come to an end in the dark age, so they must keep the flame linked.

@@MataPTG It's an insanely well delivered prophecy. Love that part, haven't played this game yet but for what it's worth I think it's worth torturing myself with it just to experience everything kow that I understand some of the lore

I've been playing the game for a long time now and I got a lot of people into it as well and I think people who have not played the game tend to exaggerate how hard the game is. The game gives you loads of options to make your life easier for which I think co-op and Shields are a great example.
For what it's worth I went to my cousins place and they have a pc so I played and I was astonished at how easy it was. Not that it was easy but it wasn't nearly as bad as people say it is

This was actually the first ending I got. I was heavily immersed into my character and had the urge to attack the firekeeper in that last moment. Needless to say my mind was blown. It didn't even bother me that I didn't get an ending trophy.

>:O i didn't even know this was possible but i'm never going to do it. it feels so cruel and pointless because it accomplishes the same thing as the ending where the fire fades but you don't kill her, which is my favorite ending. the firekeeper's line, "ashen one, hearest thou my voice still?" proves what the games have been hinting at all along, that the age of dark isn't the terrible calamity that gwyn feared. life goes on, and darkness just the natural next step, a peaceful rest for a world that's been forced to burn for far too long. there's hope in the dark.
I don’t know about it being the same. The age of dark may or may not come but the Ashen One has taken the first flame for themselves. They’re like a god now.

It is cruel and pointless. It reflects the players actions, killing the firekeeper looking for some secret ending. That’s the metaphorical meaning beyond the lore.
But in-universe, the ashen one has become like gollum in this ending. It covets the flame, not for power, not to link it, but for the petty embers themselves.
They are symbolically offering it to the darksign eclipse, because they are cursed by by their own darksign, which drains their body of their soul and forces them to seek souls and embers to maintain their humanity lest they go mad. They will do this even or especially after going insane, which is why hollows are usually hostile. And the unkindled are an evolved form of this curse made especially to seek fire. It’s in their very nature to lust for even the faintest spark. And so it is, that Ash seeketh Embers
It is possible theoretically that (a different version of) any of the three main endings could still happen depending on what the ashen one does after the fade to black. For example they could be an idiot and try to use the fire like an ember and accidentally link the fire, or it could fade in their hands, but in their petty greed they wanted to hold onto it for just a moment, or they could try to usurp the fire for themselves like in the lord of hollows ending (no idea if that’d be successful without the dark sigils).

This is my favorite ending it has a meaning and pain to it so that even after you see it you keep remembering it, those are the best endings to me ones with a hidden purpose that hits you right in the feels. It was executed so well the voices were so faint and unforgetable with pain and sadness in certain charcters that rubbed off on you while playing in the world until you decide to kill them by having that world die to show they were right to be empty and lifeless

Played the game as solaire. He would never let the fire fade. I had to step on her.
Linking the fire is about perservering in the face of suffering, knowing it will be harder next time but finding the soul to rise again and again. Never knowing or allowing true defeat. Always praising the sun.
I like to think that when the first flame fades out, an age of man will start. But without the loords.
A world like ours will start. And much of what happened will be forgotten. But some will be remembered as fairytales.

I feel like the usurpation ending is more suitable. it ends the age of fire, but doesn't just turn things into abyss, you just become the ruler of mankind in the better or the worse.

The story revolves around a balance between Darkness and Light(Fire). The Maidens job is to guide the chosen undead who shows up when the last flame is about to die out and decides rather to rekindle the flame and continue the age of light, or put it out and usher an age of darkness. Here's the thing, ever since Demon's Souls the story has revolved around the chosen ushering an age of light. In Dark Souls it was hinted that perhaps it was time to give darkness a shot, and in Dark Souls 3 the story heavily revolves around the concept that it's finally time for the age of darkness to take over. The maiden is the flames watcher, so the chosen undead has to go through her if he intends to usher an age of darkness. Hence, I feel this is the REAL ending of Dark Souls 3. A chosen undead who is finally willing to let the age of darkness come because he knows, with time, a new age of flame will be born. After all, this entire series revolves around things trying to give the age of darkness it's time while others constantly impede it. We unnaturally interfere in the cycle of life and death, creating the undead curse. By letting the cycle progress, and darkness have a turn, we restore balance and usher in a new era of life.

So many people saying "Why would you kill her?" Did you not pay attention? She told him to kill her and take her eyes jeepers creepers style.
You want to become hollow. Have all npcs in the shrine then kill each of them at the end. U will be empty inside for real after doing this

I guess the flame was dieing with every game so the Ashen one is like "f*&# it! I worked hard to get here, I'm getting this upgrade before I die!"

Demon's Souls already did this exact thing with Soul power instead of the First Flame.
i personally believe this ending also results in the fire being linked again, it's subtle but in here the protagonist doesn't really appear to be looking for power himself, i mean we see him bowing in front of the dying sun and raising both his open hands as if humbly offering the fire, i think this ending is the result of having a last minute change of heart after seeing the lights being turned off and perhaps realizing in horror at the abominable reality that's to come, the handmaiden words at the end salso seem to mock the protagonist's pitiful nature (which is to blindly link the fire), anyone else think the same?

More of the opinion that the entire goal of that ending is for you to take the flame in its weakest state, the only one in which an undead could physically hold it. Whatever the plan or meaning beyond that isnt even hinted at.

This mirrors the betrayal ending from that game, mainly the way you step on her head after striking her down.
It does make sense to have at least one ending reference the game that started it all, I just didn't think it was gonna be this.

This ending is my favorite ending, the whole thing is uncertain, there is heavy lore implications and connections in this ending but I don't know how to describe it..
It's my personal belief that this is the true ending.
One of my favourite gaming moments of all time. Its not simply unlocking a new ending cutscene. The way the music changes to this beautifully melancholic track and she changing her dialogue to "Mayst thou thy peace discover" truly signaling that instead of continuing the cycle the world is now inevitably going to end...

This ending is for those who want to show that their duty is to londor and it's elements, which is why the character offers the flame to the sun, nothing will keep you from doing that duty. basicaly: PRAISE THE SUN
You get the first flame only for yourself, you become a God and use all that power only for yourself

While some think it is the player going insane seeing the firekeeper as the next boss fight to get closer to linking the fire
Another theory is that the player character realize the first flame is just a suped up ember and he must take it for himself
I have a feeling that..this ending links with the dark lord without the need of...doing that ridiculous marriage crap if you think about it. The firekeeper is supposedly "ending" the ember...but you realize...she is not, so you kill her and take the ember to end it yourself if she wont.
Or...
After you kill her when you realize she isn't ending it, you plan on...combining both light and dark together. And...ash seems heavily implied...and what color is ash most of the time? Grey........and what other thing do we know that's related to grey? Well...I'm pretty sure you know.
But this is all but my speculation...for now...

I have always interpreted this ending as The Ashen One offering the First Flame to the Abyss, combining both the light and dark and taking us back to the Age of Ancients, the Age of Grey.

I did this ending accidentally on my first playthrough.. I was so mad, I love the fire keeper I didn't want to kill her
I did this accidentally. I killed her with my Dragonslayer Axe and just annihilated the shit outta her. It went to a cutscene and I was hella shocked to see that.

I think that this is the true ending. Ashen one shows his trueself. The self of small insignificant undead. who wanted to plunge the world into darkness.
That has to be the most interesting part about this ending, the darkness stops encroaching upon the world once you grab it and the cursed sky grows more intense.

i did like that touch of the sun bleeding (i dunno if it's been in the other 2 as this was only my second soulsborne game first one being bloodborne) it felt i dunno right? like this is how the end of the world in dark souls should look
Ookami inazuma not actually, in Dark Souls 1 it seems fairly normal, Dark Souls 2 had a darker setting and more sunsets rather than day times, also in Dark Souls 2 it's continuously told that many of the miracles now are long forgotten, as if also there'd be less and less hope, and barely a glimpse of it in Dark Souls 3 (yet they wouldn't apply the canon to the game stadistics otherwise the souls series would be beyond a nightmare)
to be fair it's hard to follow dark souls lore anyway (the fact that Ornstien somehow survived to just before dark souls 3 and went to find the nameless king hell even smough was still alive

The Griffith Ending
So mean, shes willing to either help you link the fire or let it die and yet you strike her.
This is a reference to Orwell's 1984.
"If you want a picture of the future, imagine a boot stomping on the human face, forever"
This ending is a reference to the search for power, to greed, to having the good intention of ending the fire but instead regretting it just because of the lust of power... It is a direct comparison to failed communist governments and their intentions to end disparity, which the flame is. This ending is a slap to the face, a look into the eyes of power.
In this ending the character has become so powerful in his search for fire, that he wants all the power to himself, and in a greedy movement, kills the fire keeper before she ends the first flame.
This ending is very similar to the "Lord of Hollows" one, but in this time the character is driven by a greed. The "Lord of Hollows" ending is different because Hollows are victims of the Gwyn's undead curse. The "Lord of Hollows" ending doesn't stop the flame, but instead, puts it in the hands of an already hollow, and the flame doesn't have any effect other than giving him the power for the other hollows to follow him like moths to the flame.
He die thousand time for this , he sacrifice his life , his memories , his sanity for this. Why he should share while he paid the price for this ? And all the rest failed or let themselves become hollow by despair.
I know this it hard but all of us would done the same shit if you lived the same nightmare. Or you are Jesus reincarnate and GG to you.

It is like a cycle that the ds world must go through, so there's no point linking the fire just to prolong it for a bit longer. As stated by the firekeeper the flames will come back anyways, that's why I reckon this should be the intended true ending(without taking over the flame for yourself ofc)
