Actually the new year is not limited to sinhala and tamil.
This new year is celebrated across south asia. Bangladesh celebrates it as bengali new year. Infact Nepal's new year also falls on same date. Nepal has its own official calender((known as Bikram Sambat(B.S.) calender)) starting this day as first day of the year.
