    Might be the spiciest US MRE. But I think the south koreans make the spiciest military ration. I had spicy rice ration a few weeks ago that had me sweating and burning going in and out!

    • @gundog4314
      @gundog4314  7 років тому +7

      I've had one from there and I thought the hottest thing in the ration was the heater, which is amazing by the way. They've only got 2 menus so perhaps I got the non-spicy one. Cheers

      pretty sure the butter is so that the sauce sticks to the wings/breading better

    _"If it's already in a package, why do you have to repackage it?"_
    One word: Foil.
    Plastic is not an air barrier, so they package it in a metal foil package to make it survivable.

    • @gundog4314
      @gundog4314  9 років тому +2

      ***** Interesting. I know of the many international rations I have tried over the past few years most just use the commercial packaging. In fact the U.S. GTW (go to war) ration is just repackaged commercial items. But foil is a good enough answer for me. Cheers Markius!

    Soldiers mix and match components all the time. No sweat. Did you notice that you had both entrees on the same side of the heater elements? That's why the mac didn't heat much. I no longer put food inside the FRH at all. I sandwich them outside the FRH bag and then wrap the whole thing up in a towel or a reflective (mylar) bag. THAT warms everything and makes the heater work doubly well, too.

    When hurricane Ike hit Texas everyone in town had to eat MRE's because everyone's power was out for days and the power at the store was down so we had to eat these, I was about 7 and we just made the best of it and it actually wasn't too bad

    While i was on Active Duty, the oldest MRE i was issued, was from 2002 ( i got out in 2014), that i issued to me in 2013. But as far as i know, when i got out the Buffalo Pulled Pork MRE was stilling being made, i had it many of times. I seen a few new ones coming out as i got out, i had the Menu 22 - Asian Style Beef Strips w/Vegetables and that was by far my favorite one

  • @Spartan536
    @Spartan536 8 років тому +2

    As far as mixing up MRE contents, we did this in ROTC all the time, its almost a guarantee, however if you had Mac & Cheese, Jalapeno cheese spread, and buffalo chicken, you would have a line of people asking to trade just about anything.
    Also a warm humvee engine or a 5T truck engine with the FRH's, made heating the MRE's a dream.

  • @OhioPrepperOne

    I just ate this MRE today, aside from the heater not working, I thought the whole MRE was outstanding, its the first MRE I have ever tried and I loved it. I thought the Buffalo Chicken was plenty spicy for me. The cookies were delicious, the turkey jerky was good as was the jalapeno cheese. The tortillas were awesome and the beans and rice was decent too. Mine had a sugar free raspberry drink which was really tasty, the cappuccino was ok but not great.

      Or you can buy real food. I was in the Marines. MREs honestly aren't bad. But there are some exceptions... Like the vegetarian ones. But for the most part, they are decent. But not good enough to replace an actual meal. Why don't you just buy some burgers or something for 6.99? Health-wise, it's better as well. MREs are loaded with carbs and fats and some protein. It's just to fill your hunger and give you energy. It's not meant to be a super healthy or delicious meal.

    Very spicy foods often do poorly when humpin a ruck and living on the ground. The frequent lack of enough water combined with "hot shit" can make such experiences... well, less than enjoyable! Not much worse than a bad case of indigestion while exchanging lead...or hunting other armed men.

    Our local WinCo gets MRE individual meals every now and again. I wish they had more variety, but at least they actually got some entrees in recently. Meatballs in sauce and Mexican-style Chicken Chili were the two (Ameriqual).
    Before that they'd just had a few big tubs with MRE-peanut butter, cheese-spread, FRH's, and mixed fruit.

    Great review! The Mac and cheese looked a little iffy to me. I also don't think I've seen them include turkey jerky in an MRE before. Regular beef jerky, yes, but turkey? I'm sure it tastes very similar to the beef. Speaking of hot peppers, I'm growing one of the hottest chili's in the world this season. Moruga Chocolate Scorpion Chili. My dad thought he was Mr. Badass, and bit a chunk out of one, like it was an apple or something. Boy, did he regret that for the next couple hours.

  • @marshallhippie

    when i had asked on a previous video if you had tasted anything spicy, i was hoping for a maybe in the international rations.... ill try a totally diffferent question
    What item from USA and/or international ration that you recall had the worst taste? And this is not because it was over aged
    glad to see you do this buffalo one, so now i know tobasco is needed
    cheers!!

    • @gundog4314
      @gundog4314  9 років тому +3

      marshallhippie They are "all" bland for the most part. I did have a ration with a tomato sauce in a brittish ration that awoke a strong case of heartburn though. I'd have to look through the old vids to try to remember the worst one I've had. But for the US ones the worst for me was the dehydrated Beef Patty. If you didn't have the time to reconstitute that thing long enough was like eating a soggy piece of styrofoam.

      Steve loves everything revolving around rations, nuance, history, details which is why he makes a great product and has a huge following, which I enjoy Steve's vids too. In fact my very own father liked Steve's vids better HAHA!
      Me on the other hand I am solely concerned with the taste and what gizmos are in the bag and how they can be made to taste better from the perspective of a Soldier that had to eat these things in the field day in and day out for 5 years. To be honest I was so sick of MREs/T-Rats it took me over 20 years before I remotely was interested in trying one again and if my nephew hadn't joined the Marines I probably wouldn't have. Now the rest is history Cheers!

    A guy I worked with calls this buffalo tuna cause it smells like tuna. I suppose the taste isn't exactly tuna but... it's weird in that respect. (not bad, just... weird)
    As for spiciness: the crushed / cracked (forget) red pepper is this tiny packet which if you DON'T care for spicy stuff, will make the entree intolerable. That stupid little thing is spicy and I've ruined a meal (to my palate) dumping the entire packet into my entree.
    Neat thing with some MRE's which include crackers, cheese, and a not-solid entree (something which kind of pours out) is to heat it all, put it in the MRE package, crush the crackers into dust, dump all the cheese into it, and you have a flavor-packed super entree which REALLY sates your appetite.

    HAHAHA "But rice and beans don't really go too well". Oh, dear, if Brazil ever makes an MRE, it will certainly have rice and beans, it's like a national dish combination to eat with some kind of meat. But i dislike any type of beans myself XD

      Well let me rephrase that...rice & beans don't go to well with minced chicken in buffalo sauce soup...I don't know really what does in fact except celery and a bit of dressing. Cheers Roberta!

    I once wrote a letter to the Tootsie Roll company asking about the repackaging problem, and even they admitted it was a bit silly, but it's what the gov't asked for, so they just do it. Lol.

      They're actually not bad at all, I just bought three off ebay for $5 each. Now if you were out in the field and that was all you had they would probably be less tasty.

    • @13megaprime
      @13megaprime 7 років тому +2

      Evan Brown I would say they taste better in the field. Especially if i was starving and it was all i had.

    • @evanbrown4820
      @evanbrown4820 7 років тому +1

      13megaprime Okay, you're right. I asked my father who was in the USMC, he worked supply and he told me they were the best thing ever out in the field. Also a little fun fact, that drink that most guys (lookin at you Steve1989) call "Army mocha" or "Ranger mocha," he said they called it "Cadillac" mixed all the coffee components with the cocoa, said the trick was to get the water as hot as possible.

    • @13megaprime
      @13megaprime 7 років тому

      Evan Brown That's an interesting concoction. I'll have to try that out. Thanks for Sharing Evan! :)

  • @AKayfabe
    @AKayfabe 6 років тому

    Do you know why they do not offer corn tortillas and always use flour? Flour ones are less healthy and kind of boring and soft corn ones are awesome and in USA we eat both kinds anyhow

    • @AKayfabe
      @AKayfabe 6 років тому

      Also why can’t they simply offer little bottle or packet of hot sauce and maybe a sachet of chili powered or something in every MRE so then they can keep it bland for folks with no taste and those who like flavor have the option. Those who dislike spice can trade their sauce and powder with others for things they prefer etc.

    • @gundog4314
      @gundog4314  6 років тому

      That is exactly why I always carried spices with me when I was in the Army. I could curb the main to fit my taste. With this one a couple of ketchup packets would have diluted the buffalo sauce more into a tangy BBQ sauce.

    I think it's a bit amusing that you don't notice the fill-line on the outside of the mocca/cappucino bag?! It's a big black line. Never used one before I suppose?
    Considering how many videos you and the other guys that make MRE's vids make, it's amusing that you never learn or watch eachothers vids and see what the other guys do. Hahaha. great and again, amusing, vids so thanks for uploading! :-)
    Question: have you ever used a MRE outdoors or in the field or when hiking?
    Trust me, it all tastes soo much better when you're hungry after a whole day's walk :-)

    • @gundog4314
      @gundog4314  9 років тому +1

      +l0n3wolf89 I did do 5 years on active duty and a few years in the reserves so you could say I may have eaten a few in the field. And as far as fill lines...real men don't need instructions LOL! Cheers Wolf

      I'm doing my own MRE's, since it's almost impossible to find or buy MRE's and ship to Sweden. Yes,we do have our 24Hour Meal and Blå Band, but I really like the way the MRE's are done (include a spoon, toiletpaper, seasoning etc) :-)
      Anyway,thanks again for fun and entertaining vids. Also, I think that every MRE should come with Patriotic Cookies ;-)

    Did you mean to have the main and side pressed together with the heating element not in between them? The cookies cracked me up. No pun intended. I've learned how to make my own tortilla MRE. Wax paper layering and a vacuum machine. Looks can be deceiving when it comes to MRE's. Cheers.
