I grew black futsu for the first time this year, they turn a brownish color when they are ripe (I let mine stay on the vine until they reached that color). The farmer I used to work for told me that he harvested them too early one year while they were still dark green and the flavor was not great at that stage, but I can say that the flavor is fantastic when fully ripened. Hopefully yours will continue to ripen and fully develop their flavor because they are now one of my favorite varieties.
Just s tip. Sweet potatoes are a beautiful and vigerous vine, but training them up a trellis is nice and all. It will shorten your harvest bulk. It cuts back on the roots, and the tubers will be fewer. The vines, when on the ground, will send out new roots, which will create more tubers.
Here in Britain, sweet potatoes don't seem to grow much at all beyond their initial planting area. There are few tubers and very small ones at that, at other areas where the vines form roots. Cooler climates are challenging for sweet potatoes, and growing them undercover is challenging for gardening space because of their leaf vigour. That's why cool climate gardeners grow Japanese varieties and sometimes decide to grow them vertically. Fingers crossed for another good year 🙂🤞

My only issue is the deer stripping the leaves from the stems I placed a flat trellis over them so the deer can eat to their hearts content everything that grows ABOVE the grate and they can't get at whats underneath. Happy deer...happy vines...happy me.
I’m in Central Florida in the US. Last year pickle worms destroyed my pumpkins. I have sweet potatoes growing/vining along the ground and up chicken wire in two areas. Small backyard garden. I have no space to store a lot of sweet potatoes nor do have a lot of space. Hoping for a few to harvest. Happy gardener 😊
Thank you for identifying the musquee de Provence squash. I ended up with 2 this year and don’t know where they came from. I grew butternut squash from store bought seeds and sugar pie pumpkins from home-saved heirloom seeds. I got squash and pumpkins, but also these two giant green Cinderella-like pumpkins that I had no idea what they were. Hopefully they’ll ripen in storage.
Sweet potato vines are delicious. You can harvest them in moderation while the tubers are developing. That makes them a very valuable crop. Plus they don’t take over so much. For recipes, look to Asian & Pacific dishes. Stir fry, soups, curries. Also Northern Italian. I substitute for kale & spinach. It does have a mild sweet potato flavor under the green. Especially good with nutmeg spiced béchamel, ground pork lasagna, and gnocchi

I grow the worty French pumpkins. They do great on a trellis, grow super well, and are very sweet. They also don't take long. Some self seeded from the compost heap this year. I had one last until May. Pumpkins are just fun.
You should try growing jicama in the polycrub next year. It's such a tasty vegetable. I've grown it indoors in a grow tent and got tubers in just a couple months so I'm sure it would do great for you!
That's a fun idea...I've not had it in years! It's not for sale here that I've seen, but I've had it in the USA. Yacon, which I do grow, is very similar to jicama. Crisp, delicious tubers 😋
My Musque de Provence looked exactly the same last year and did change color in storage. I found the flesh to be stringy so hopefully yours turn out more delicious! My favorite squashes are honeynut and kuri, both of which are delicious, productive and are a great size for a smaller household
Pumpkin Turban looks quite good 😊👌 i grown the orange pumpkin it started good but could only harvest one the stem got infected don't know how i guess weather was still hot when it started producing pumpkin with pest attack still good planted two more will see if they can produce in winter.
thank you for a beautiful video of the garden...yes, garlic is awful here in the northeast...it was so bad, i felt they should have given it away instead of charging a dollar a head...hahaha
Oh wow, really? I thought garlic was in short supply rather than poor quality, too. Most garlic in supermarkets comes from China - it must have been a bad year for them.
Beautiful squash Tanya! I grew Turks Turban, Uchi Kurkuri and Crown Prince for the first time. I loved watching them grow and will definitely do them again. Your veg garden looks wonderful and all your hard work paid off.

The question is what do you do with your pumpkins? I love the larger ones but do find them really impractical and struggle to use mine enough in cooking. Sweet potatoes look amazing! Can't wait to see the harvest.
With large ones, it's all about making food that you can freeze for future meals. For example, a big one can make a ton of soup! Still, this harvest will be too much for us, so I'll be giving some to friends and family 🙂

Thank you 🙂 As for produce, we eat some fresh, preserve some for the winter, and sometimes give it to friends and family. Some of these are going to my friend's restaurant, too. It's called Versa and only serves food made with local ingredients.

Hi Tanya, what a great haul of pumpkins! Your plot looks fab! On a different note could you tell me what you put down on your pathways? Is it Polyethalene or weedproof membrane? Many thanks.
Some have just cardboard underneath, which degrades. Around the wooden edged beds and the top of the garden, I use a fabric-like polypropylene layer. Mainly because it lasts and helps me to harvest the composted wood chips 2-3 years after I put them down. If you're gentle, it doesn't rip, and you can lift pure sheets of compost up with it. It saves so much time!
I don't understand why eggplants are still a thing. They are the most disgusting vegetable ever. I have the same feeling about raspberries. We grow 15 hectares of raspberries, harvest every day of the year. Don't understand how we make money because they are shit.

I roasted it, made a big batch of soup, and froze some of it and the rest of the cooked pumpkin :)
