Hallelujah Roy, I've been searching for a recipe that was like what my mother made. You come the closes, she would Fried Apple Pies. Starting with peeling and coring the apples and cooke them down, sweeten them up and make dough and fry away to happiness. I'm using your recipe.. You saved the day. Thank you!!!
I like how real this man is
Every year I bake Hand pies in a variety of flavors for farmers market and the customers love, love them..
Thank you so much. Finally a simple crust that's not biscuit dough. You taught me sooooo much in this video. One of my best memories as a kid was my Mom sneaking hot cherry pies from McDonald's into the movie theater. That night I feel in love with Star Wars with a hot cherry pies in hand. It was a summer night and on the way home there was a billion brite stars in the sky and a warm breeze on my face. I can't eat a fried pie without remembering the magic of it all. You just gave me the knowledge to recreate pure kid joy. Thank you again !!!
Thank you for making your wife a gluten-free version of this first! It was so yummy!
I have a soft spot for (and from) fried hand pies. These look super yum - thanks.
Me Too, even after reviewing, I can't help myself grabbing one while in the grocery checkout lane.
Ive seen so many pie recipes..... this is far the BEST, SIMPLEST and DOABLE. Im happy I came across your video. Thank you.
I love creator cooks who offer small batches ! I'm drooling over this. Saved, and thank you !
I made these for my hubby yesterday for Fathers day because cherry pie is his favorite dessert. They turned out amazing. Great recipe! Thanks for sharing!
I’ve always loved eating Amish fried pies. The best. I’ll have to try making these.
This is perfect. I love pie too. I hate making a pie because I never finish before the crust turns and the filling jellies. I would make at least a dozen and freeze 10... maybe 8. I'm alone so there's no need to share. I'm picturing myself with two pies a scoop of vanilla ice cream...tonight.
Loved this video.
First time watching
Your down to earth and relatable.
Seriously enjoyed your style of teahing
Yum! Hostess pies have been crap since I have been old enough to develop better taste buds. I tried to eat one a few years ago and it was awful! I’ve always wanted to make my own. Now I know how. Thank you!
Yummy..my mouth is watering! Going out tomorrow to get frozen tart cherries. Never had egg in pie crust..but will do as you did.
Thanks Roy!
Thank you for your delicious recipe and unassuming nature - thank you
Thank you for sharing this! My husband loves fried pies so I will make him some of these.
It looks amazeing thanks for showing us how to make them
This was so nice to watch and easy to understand. Roy reminds me of my grandfather a lot whom I lost when I was very young. Great video keep going!
Thanks so much for sharing! They were delicious! I have been craving some pocket pies for a while and these hit the spot.
Yummy! Looks like grandma's! TFS🤗
Looks good.....love fried pies....
Yes it looks really nice and yummy.
They are looking good.
Hi Roy, I just found your channel and it looks like this particular episode is two years old. Maybe you wont even get this message.
As a pastry chef/chef, I want to tell you job well done! Wow!!!
I also wanted to mention that actually the dough that you made would be officially called a French tart dough. It is just a fancy version of a regular pie crust with egg added, sometimes sugar, and definitely made with butter never shortening. Occasionally a squirt of lemon juice.
It is also the same French tart dough that you would use to make authentic quiche, minus the sugar.
I’m not sure if you mind, but I’m going to offer a couple tips to take this dessert over the top.… not that you have to do anything to make this superb. But we cooks and bakers always try to take it up a notch.
I did not notice if you chilled your dough (disc)right after you made it. With as little handling as possible during the mixing process, wrap the dough up and refrigerate it for an hour or even overnight before rolling them out into individual balls. Then once you make the hand pie, refrigerate them again, just as you did, before frying.
The whole purpose of the chilling is to keep the butter ice cold so it will remain separate from the dough-so that when the frying process takes place, it forms the layers. It sounds like you figured that part out.
On the cherry pie filling itself, you also could make up the fruit filling over the stove, and let it chill before making the fried pies. I would add a smidge of butter and a drop of pure almond extract to the filling.
For the icing, add a smidge of pure vanilla.
PS
Unless you have a sour cherry tree in your backyard, they are very hard to come by unless you have a source. They are mostly grown in places like Michigan.
Some orchards will carry them in the spring -early summer when they are in season. You can buy them in a large tin frozen in a “slush- pack.”
Sometimes you’re able to get them from certain gourmet stores that offer unique items.
PSS Baker’s Secret
Always make a double recipe so you can hide the evidence of having eaten half the pastries.
Again, job well done. ❤❤❤
Hi and thank you for the kind words and informative comments. Yes its been a while since I have posted, I hope to start up again soon. Thanks
@@CookWithRoy I’m glad you are OK. When I realized you had not posted anything for three years I was a little worried for you. I am happy to hear you are good. You should keep filming.

Those look awesome! Hostess pies have not been the same since the original company sold it in the 90’s. I would rather make my own and perfect my own recipe. I’m definitely going to try your recipe, thanks for sharing!
Thanks and I agree - many of our favorite snacks have been altered for the worse.

They look amazing, down south where I’m from, they are the best tasting fried pies and they make fillings with fruit, chocolate, coconut fillings and even potatoes(sweet potatoes )
Hi. Roy am from. Trinidad and I really love your fried cherry pie am going to make it
Wow that cherry pie looked so yummy. I like cherry & blueberry or lemon curd. But everyone makes apple.
Lots of glaze makes it so much better.
Thank you so much for showing me how to make a cherry pie. I remember when I was growing up that's all I ate was cherry pie from hostess but for some reason their quality has gone down the drain straight into the toilet so once more thank you and I'm going to get started yummy yummy.
thank you
Omg so yummy 😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
These look really good and flaky. I'm going to try your recipe.
My mom make fried pies for the local grocery store. She never wrote it down. I’m going to try these
Yum
We all know cooks don't like to bake. But you did alright!
Thanks
I'm making these today, just got back from the store.. only change will be i want them bigger, thanks for the video
I just found your channel today, this recipe looks great! I hope you are thinking of making more videos!
Hello brand new to your channel. thank you for sharing this with us.
I'm so excited to save your video. Loved seeing you make these and hope to make apple tonight. Would you add anything to canned apple pie filling? This is Walmart brand. I usually add a bit of butter and make the apple pieces smaller. I have also straight out of the oven sprinkled sugar over them or near done added some egg wash on top to brown more and sprinkled sugar then. I may have done the egg wash initially plus the sugar then baked instead of deep dry. Appreciate this and will share on FB!!
Thanks for the recipe and video, I'm going to make these tomorrow! I have a large bag of cherries (they look like raisins) can I use the same method?
Sorry for the late response, but it sounds like they are dried cherries. Not sure how that would work.
First of all..... I love anything cherry... its my favorite..... I do have to admit I love Hostess cherry pies.... Thank you for the recipe..
YUMM YUMM
❤️
Very informature
👏😋
Looks awesome!
Tip: Try adding some of the squeezed out Cherry Juice to the glazing mix.
Way To Go Royyyy ..Lol Its Not The Smoothest But Thats Nice..Great Job Taking Your Time
Hi I love fried pies, can you tell me do you use all purpose flour or self rising . Thank you and God Bless.
They sound crispie
This looks great. Thanks for showing how to must the crust without milk. Oh…is the flour all purpose or self rising?
👍💗💗💗👍
Coffee too
If you were to use fresh cherries would you just cook them a little bit and add sugar? Is this recipe interchangeable with other fruits?
If you add a little sugar to the fresh cherries after pitting, they will give off alot of juice. Cook that juice down a little and or add a little cornstarch to help tbicken
When you added the cornstarch to the cherry juice, what was the purpose of you banging the spoon on the side of measuring cup then put it in mixture and stirred it up. Im curious of why you did that????
WOW...THEY LOOK AWESOME!!!! IM MAKING THESE. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT YOUR FLOUR TYPE IS. ALL PURPOSE OR SELF RISING.
Idk about everyone else but in my personal recipes unless it is specified as a special type of flour it is always just all purpose flour and I think that is the general rule for most other printed recipes. If you're ever unsure you can check a couple different people's recipes against each other and usually that can clear things up. Also, comparing recipes can help you tweak things here and there to come up with your own version.
huh i wonder if you basted melted butter on it if you could cook it in an air fryer
I really like you are doing it in small amounts . As a single person I’m always trying to cut down everyone’s recipes to a reasonable size for one person. It is so easy to double/ triple recipes but more challenging to divide and still get it to work. Going to try these tomorrow.
