Because of the extreme malabsorption from the DS surgery, I wouldn't count vitamins from food. You're not absorbing them. Count them from your vitamins.

Thanks for the note. It made me do some more research as why. Since I kinda have a modified, at least in common channel length at 3 meters, I was thinking I would have more absorption, but I am finding, at least with iron and mag/calcium, I am may not! What I found, which was NOT in my DS literature...details, imagine. So, I have approx. 6.9 meters of small intestines, (women 7.1 meters). There are 3 parts, which I knew. Duodenum, Jejunum, and the Ileum. First, the Duodenum, the shortest, is not quite a 1/3 a meter, has four parts, and the first part is the only part not bypassed, the other 3 parts are bypassed, and so all DS patients, modified or not, have only one part left for iron absorption, the first part, where the pyloric value is, which is only about an inch or two long, which I did NOT know! Then the jejunum, which is only 2.5 meters, is totally bypassed. This is the main absorption part, especially magnesium, which we really need, especially for calcium absorption! That leaves the rest to the ileum, which is anywhere from 2 to 4 meters long. So, first two parts = 3 meters and ileum is the remaining 4 meter portion, which is the only part, besides the inch or so of the Duodenum, that works for us. Main job is to absorb vitamin B12 and biles salts (fats) and anything not absorbed earlier, which is EVERYTHING! So, DS folks, like you, Melanie, have 1 meter of ileum for this to happen, MDS and myself have 3 meters for this to happen. Which means you don't absorb much fat at all and us MDS folks absorb about half the fat we used to. Sound right! Again, Thank you, This is now making more sense on why all DS or MDS need the iron (a lot) and Magnesium/Calcium (a real lot). How'd I do? Anyone, please add to my simpleton explanation, if I missed something really important!

DuodenalSwitch Man You say you had "modified DS." You must've had the Loop/SIPS/SADI procedure with a single anastomosis. Correct?

No, it was a standard but with a 3 meter common channel. So treating it like a modified or SIPS. My surgeon had just been to a conference, a week. While there, my surgery asked around, since my insurance only would authorise a standard, not modified, which I wanted because of the longer channel, and some surgeons have just made the common channel the length of a modified, 3 metered, rather than the 1 meter, to comply with the insurance, which means they still had to perform two intestinal attachments. (Not going to try to spell the 'a' word). Since my main reason, at 35% BMI, was for diabetes and weight loss for my severe sleep apnea, I was extremely happy he was able to do it. Thoughts?

DuodenalSwitch Man I gotcha. 2 anastomoses with a longer common channel. I look forward to following your progress! Are you vegetarian? I haven't heard you mention any meats or other proteins besides protein shakes.

Lol. I have been a vegan and a raw vegan, being fat the whole time. The only time I had any weight loss was when I did Atkins. Who knew WLS is glorified Atkins! I Love meats...4 more days, then turkey and mayo salad!!!!! I haven't issues, yet, except for the garlic hummus, so hoping I can start eating chicken rests and turkey! I volunteered serving the today and before I left I had half a teaspoon mashed potato, yam, dressing and pumpkin pie, just a taste of each, with gravy....2 hours and no explosions, yet...but I hear some 'movement!' Going to a French Restaurant, Pomme Fritte, downtown Palm Springs, planning on French Onion Soup and maybe pureed turnips, if they have that.
