To those who complain about whales. Japanese whaling is a culture that has been around for about 5000 years. We have a long history with whales and we have not been whaling them to extinction for a long time. And not only the meat, but almost all of it has been used. And in many places in Japan, there are thanksgiving and memorial services for whales. The reason there are fewer whales nowadays is, frankly speaking, the fault of the Western nations. By the 1830s, 60% of the world's whaling was in the US. Oil whale oil, except for the beard, was usually discarded. They continued to catch them until oil was found in Pennsylvania in 1859. It is wrong to forget that past, act as if we did nothing wrong, and complain about countries such as Japan and Norway who have continued constant whaling for a long time.
It might be wrong to forget the past, but it is also equally wrong to try to revive a custom that has been dead for some time just because someone wants to make money from it. And that is what is happening in Japan right now. Most young Japanese have never tried whale, so those who want to resume whaling as a viable concern are trying to market it as a delicacy... when there are other sources of protein available. And whilst you lay the blame for the decline in whale populations on the West, doesn't it strike you as strange that the steepest declines occurred long after many nations gave up whaling?

Only those who have renounced all animal eating have the right to criticize whaling. Westerners who eat beef steaks and claim that Japanese people who eat whales have no morals are some kind of mentally ill.
Minke whales are currently not endangered, but here in the US it's taboo to eat any kind of whale. I wish it wasn't, I'd love to try it one day, it looks quite tasty! It almost looks like beef, or a much fattier ostrich.
If you want to try whale meat I recommend travelling to Wadaura, Chiba Prefecture on the Pacific Coast. It's a small whaling town and the whale is the livelyhood of the place. If Tuna is the Chicken of the sea, then Whale is the Tofu of the sea I decided. By itself it does not have earth-shattering taste but the method of preparation is decisive. I've had it in sashimi, grilled, and tempura style. Tempura was the best. You can also have it smoked, like beef jerky. It all goes well with beer. Wadaura is sandwiched between the sea and the mountains. There are endless beaches with nice warm water even in November thanks to the Kuroshio warm current. It's a surfing spot. Within a 5 minute walk from the shores there are mountain hiking trails. In between the Whale Museum is full of scientific knowledge as well as culture and lore. Should you choose to go to Wadaura for a taste of whale I recommend staying at Oasis Wadaura, a mere one minute walk from Wadaura Train Station on the Sotobo Line. It's very affordable and conveniently available on Booking dot com. THE ROOMS HAVE TATAMI MATS! TATAMI MATS!

@@Yourtwistedtranssis seriously? ...take a fatty, thick cut of bison, or grass fed beef, and inject it with salmon oil. Then briefly smoke the steak before finishing it as usual. It's not exact, but it's in the wheelhouse of the flavor enough to scratch the itch.
Sir, I wish to try Whale Tenderloin and Whale Bacon... so much. I may try to braise the jowel area, however, not sure white or red wine or a brandy and add that cooked rendering added to a different stock pot to fortify a fish base. I may even consider making roux hardtack with the whale fat due to rarity so I might dry-store it in a freezer for use in sauce or soups. Hard to tell without trying it, though. Great finds
新潟出身としては畝須は夏に味噌汁にするのがめちゃくちゃ出汁が出て最高にうまいです。畝須そのものも多少かたくてもコリコリしてて美味しいと思います。
畝須って名前は初めて聞きましたが,この脂がうまいんですよね。祖母は香りが苦手と言っていましたが,よくねだって作ってもらった記憶があります。
鯨汁ですかね。美味しいですよね。ジャガイモと茄子を入れてよく食べてました。
畝須は薄くスライスして甘辛く炒めても美味しいです。自分はベーコンと赤身の間に有るかのこの部分が美味しく感じました。
母親の実家に帰省した際に今は亡き祖母がいつもクジラの皮+脂身の味噌汁を作ってくれてました。
噛むとクニュクニュしてじわっと旨味が口中に広がり美味しかったですね。
